Learn how to check and replace a fuse. This video came after a conversation with a customer that did not know what a fuse was. This is on my 2005 Volkswagen Passt 1.8t

This is a really good couple of questions. The open slots are usually for extra equipment. That fuse panel you see in the video is the same for Golf, Beetle, Jetta, Passat, and is used all over the world. The numbers being upside down is probably due to a machine loading them. It doesn't matter for function.

Yes they are fused. They are on the same fuse if I recall. Generally if both of those switches are not working you have other issues. Be sure to check all your fuses.

@Lisa, yes it can. I have seen fuses look good but still be blown. They are built to be obvious when they blow. But it's not always the case. If you don't have any test equipment you can swap a good fuse in its place.

That is a good possibility. Generally it is the fuse in the back of the radio. Run down and check the fuses on the side(they are in the same place as my Passat). If they are all good, you may need to pull the radio and check the fuse in the back of the radio. If it is good, remove and reinstall the fuse. Then plug radio back in. That almost always fixes it.

IF you are having an issue with all the lights in the right headlight, it may be an issue with the connector at the light. If it's just the low beam, it could be a fuse, or a wiring issue to the bulb.

Start by checking fuse 41. I have ran into that exact thing. Some Passats have those things on the same fuse. The fuse block is in the same place as the Passat in the video(which is my Passat). Just pop the side cover off.

@Rudy, It very well could be a fuse issue. I don't recall which fuse you need to check. I always recommend checking all the fuses. Check and make sure they are not blown, AND they are all there.

Do you have a Jetta or a Passat? It will make a difference in how we look at things. When you use the key, are you talking about in the key slot in the trunk? Do you hear any noise coming from the trunk?

Sorry for the late reply, I hope that you got your roof fixed. I don't know what fuse you need to check. I HIGHLY recommend picking up a cheap test light. You can get them for under $10. Then you can check all the fuses.

You have to reach in behind the trim in the trunk and pull the lid open. You can also "pry" the door open with a small screw driver. Just be really careful.

@socal, I have heard and seen that. In fact my Passat does it to. The issue gets worse when it's hot. I think it comes from a poor connection inside the instrument cluster. I have never fixed one. I have read about people fixing it, but never seen it.

Sorry for the late reply. This is an issue I have seen before. Off the top of my head I forget what the issue is. You can just unplug the fans to keep them from running. It may have been a coolant temp sensor issue.

Another method if you have a VOM or Volt Ohm Meter is to set the meter to Volts DC and probe across the fuse, put the leads so that you are reading voltage across the fuse. A good fuse reads 0 volts because the voltage is the same at each tab it would be like putting both probes on the positive terminal of the battery. The voltage at each probe point would be exactly the same so the voltage between the probe points would be 0. When you test a bad fuse the voltage would read 12 Volts because one side is still hooked to power but since the fuse has blown the other side is at 0 Volts so the Voltage across the fuse is 12 Volts. This method is how you find bad fuses like Bussman Type fuses in an AC curcuit. You set the VOM to AC Volts and measure across the fuse. Good fuses are 0 Volts Bad Fuses read the supply Voltage in AC Volts.

Not sure what you are referring too. Often we call things different things from parts catalogs, and aftermarket. What exactly is this part. I don't want to give you bad info.

IT sounds like the door is not unlocking. It could be a failing door latch.

Love you video thank you My locks on my 2008 VW Beetle will go on and off constantly and also all my windows roll down only if I use the switch that puts all four Windows down at the same time ( oh by the way its a convertible and that switch doesn't work either) is that a fuse or is that an electrical issue that's going to cost me a fortune

hey thank for the video, i have one question tho. I idk why but the red screen in between my gauges turns on but the black letters and numbers are very faint and the only way i can read it is if i look at it at an angle. have you heard of the before.

Forgot to mention that the turn signal works for a little while after I replace the fuse and then the fuse blows soon after. We checked the current draw at the fuse and measured less than 4 amps. My Passat is a 2005 TDI Wagon.

That is a strange one. I have replaced a bunch of flasher relays, that is also the hazard switch. I might start by checking all the bulbs. Since yours is a wagon, start with removing the rear turn signal housings. I have seen them installed poorly. Heck they are a pain to get in right. You also have the lights in the mirrors. Those are LEDs, and should not be a problem.. I think I have only replaced a few front turn signals on Passats. I would pull the rear housings(only for the turn signals) and see what you get.

Instead of telling the customer of replacing the fuses all the time. Check if they are a non-smoker. If they aren't. They would be using power plugs in the outlet and it would sometimes short the connections. Using a pick, bent the outlet prongs so it won't short again and there you go, the car would never come back again.

Hi. Is there a fuse which only serves the side view mirror turn signal indicator lights, and if so, what is its location/number? That would be for a 2005 VW Passat GLX V6 with automatic transmission. hi, im not a mechanic but im trying to test my car's fuses, i just bought a tester like yours and it does not light at all, i might have gotten a defective one or, do you turn the key on on the ignition to test them? also, i noticed in your panel some fuses are with the number backward, does it matter if the fuses are like that?... meaning right on left or left on right position for the fuse?... So, idk if you’ll see this cuz it’s been so long but, I know in my 06 Corolla I have the fuse box under my steering wheel and extra fuses under the hood. My problem is, I can’t seem to figure out if my boyfriends 05 vw golf tdi has its own spot for replacement fuses as well. Tried googling, scouring in the manual, etc and can’t seem to figure it out.. we also checked under the hood but didn’t wanna mess with stuff too much lol. So, the question is, does the vw golf have a spot for extra, replacement fuses to replace any that have blown and where might it be? Thanks great video. My VW Passat 2001's tachometer, fuel gauge, speedometer, and odometer are not working, only ABS and oil signs are on on the panel all the time which are wrong. Can this be fuses because seems definitely electrical to me.

Number of questions: any idea which fuse is for the gas tank door and trunk release? Also, don't have your handy fuse detection tool and took each fuse out to see if it was blown. Never found one that looked blown. Also after turning the car back on, the dash indicators such as gas level and speed no longer show up! The time and other indicators are flashing. The VW dealership said that this may happen if the key is in the ignition when checking the fuses, but the key was not in the ignition. Any suggestions?

Molly Murphy off hand I don't recall. For some reason I don't think they are directly fused. Be sure that you do not have the trunk in valet mode. My guess is you got a fuse installed in the wrong spot. Did you take it to the dealer and have them check, or just call and ask?

Charles ive tested some fuses on 12 volts for some VWs that tend to blow. I believe theyre ussually a 30 or 20 amp fuse. Ive tested with a test light but some wont light up the fuse tester when i touch both test sides. Does this mean theres a ground for the fuse and if i plug my light to Battery positive should they light up if i test them? Sorry for the confusion.

try moving the bulb around if it turns on in certain positions the terminal inside is corroded you can try cleaning it

I have a 2006 Passat. Both of my DRL, both of my low beam headlights, and my 12v no longer work. The original owner's manual shows that in the Driver's side fuse location #5 it should have a 10 amp fuse for the right side headlight. There is no fuse in that spot. I am the only one who works on the car and since there has never been a fuse there, I am not sure how the headlight was working. Any ideas?
