Hi guys need a bit of help from you. Bought my first proper mountain bike, second hand (Cube Acid). Most of the bike is fine except the owner did not maintain it (if at all) but I got it really cheap so I took it. Problem is both the hydraulic brakes are shot, so they need to be bled, oil and disc pads changed. I'm not an expert since I'm new with this stuff. When I inspected the brakes at home I noticed that one brake piston on the front and both on the back do not retract properly inside when I release the lever. Also one back piston is completely not moving either in or out. My question is should I bother trying to fix them or should I scrap them and buy new brakes? Brakes are Shimano BR-M445. Thanks for the help. Appreciate it.

Hi GMBN: I have two bikes one with Deore brakes and one with SLX brakes, after some time of riding both, when I wipe the rotors with a rag or paper towel, there always seems to be some of black stuff, once I clean them off and ride them for a while there will be black stuff on my brakes again, they are not noticeable unless you wipe the rotors with a towel then the black stuff shows on the towel, my brakes don't squeal they function perfectly. Is it leaking oil? Why are SLX and Deore both behaving that way they are mid-range brakes that should be reliable. PLEASE HELP both of these bikes are purchased within a year so if the brakes and leaking oil I can send them back to Shimano under warranty.

tips for getting oil off from discs if they are making noise ? ( dunno though if oil is cause of random "screams" when breaking)
@mattgriffin62809 жыл бұрын
Pienimusta boiling/evaporating. If you have metal or sintered pads just get a blow torch or use a gas stove and heat the face of the pads which comes into contact with the rotor and the oil should boil and evaporate off.

@Batlikeman9 жыл бұрын
Ewan Brown Clean them and then just drench them in wd-40, always works. wash them after they are moving though
@EeroSoralahti9 жыл бұрын
Ewan Brown I wasn't able to get the pistons working on my old break with any chemicals or mechanical pushing :\. Needed to buy a new caliper. Would be great to have a video on how to improvise if the usual methods just don't work.
@NNICKKK9 жыл бұрын
Batlikeman this is terrible advice for Ewan, do NOT do this- WD40 shouldn't be used anywhere near a brake-and certainly not for this problem. WD40 is a light oil based product that may introduce contaminated material into the calliper and more importantly you risk contaminating the rotor and pad. A calliper should be properly inspected and serviced if needed. With the pads REMOVED before inspection, a stuck piston can be coaxed back with light pressure from a plastic tyre lever or a drop of the brake fluid applied carefully around the piston. That might free up the piston. If its sticking badly and seems 'dry' then it probably needs serviced/stripped. Most good bike stores will do this if you lack confidence or the tools.
@NNICKKK9 жыл бұрын
***** correct :) just not the WD40...never the WD...

i think i have problem with my caliper adapter. it make my caliper not right in the center of the rotor. when i screw my caliper in,it bend to one side. i try to make the caliper right in center before screw it in. but it doesnt work
@ilikerealflight9 жыл бұрын
+Prakasa Aditya I realize this is a late rply but it is possible that is you have cable disk breaks that only one pad moves. That's the way my brakes work. So when you break the one pad kinda pushes the rotor over to the other pad and slows you down that way. There should be a screw on the stationary pad. Adjust that slightly and the pad should move away from the rotor
@fernandonogueira22917 жыл бұрын
Hey guys, hail to the show and yourselves!! Our saviors from mechanical issues! So, the pads on my rear brake are not fully touching the rotor. They´re are more or less using half of the width of the rotor. What could be causing that?

Can anyone help me with this a problem I'm having with my brakes.. After a long ride in very wet conditions, I got home and rinsed my bike off. The next day when I wanted to do a full clean I noticed my rear brake lever was not returning and the pistons were pushed out so that the wheel wasn't spinning. I took the wheel off, pushed the pistons back in and replaced the pads. When I put the wheel back on, the brake lever went all the way to the handlebars and the pistons don't push out and the lever doesn't work at all. I have Shimano M500 brake levers and the brake is Shimano MT-500.
