i find it almost impossible to accurately read the oil level on my 2021 tundra. oil seems to smear all over the dipstick and one side reads high and the other side reads low .

I got into the habit of checking my oil every Monday, after one day, I thought upon start up of my car, that my engine sounded like it did when it was low on oil. It had a little clatter and tick on start up. Ok later I checked it and the dip stick was empty. It needed 2 quarts. How that happened I have no idea. I must have caught things before any damage was done, as it didn't appear to hurt my engine any. After that I checked it every Monday and kept it topped off.

The problem with every video and tutorial I've seen, is that in the 30 or so years I've been driving cars, I don't think I've ever seen a clear indicator of the correct level on the dip stick. The level only shows on one side correctly(ish) but there's always enough oil all the way up the stick to make the reading at least a bit ambiguous. Always check mine first thing in the morning, and it's always the same. Even after you clean the dip stick and put it back in, when it comes back out again, there's never a clear reading like there always is in demonstration videos or manuals. Doesn't matter how often you clean it and reinsert it, always oil all the way up the side.

May have seen this tip already but here goes - pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean. Reinsert, wait three seconds, and pull out again holding it horizontally as soon as possible. Place on a paper towel and press the paper towel around it. Open the paper towel up and you will see the oil print left. Where the print has full coverage indicates the true level. Some mechanics don't do this. Just last week I was "guaranteed" by a mechanic that the oil level was maxed. Got home and checked it, it was slightly below the minimum notch on the dipstick.

When I change my oil I simply add the amount referenced in the owner's manual as the capacity for an oil and filter change. Then run the engine for a few minutes and while it's running, check around the drainplug and oil filter to make sure there are no obvious leaks. There is no need to check the dip-stick because I know I put the correct amount of oil in & I also know I'll be checking it next time I drive the car as I always do after an oil change. However, if whoever changed the oil is unsure then it would be wise to check as long as your vehicle is on a level surface. The two spots on the dipstick mark the Low and full levels. The oil should be at the full mark if you filled it. (Duh) On a 2009 RAV4 with the four cylinder AR-FE engine, the difference between the two marks is approximately 1.6 quarts. Consult your owner's manual for the details for your engine. Within a few days of changing my oil or the first time I drive it after an oil change, I will check the dip-stick again either at home or while filling the fuel tank. Then usually I'll check it a couple times a month. On a trip I'll check every couple of days. If your driveway is not level I suggest checking it at a location you know is level and make sure it is at the full mark. Then when you get home check it again. That way you will know where the level should be on your dip-stick and in your driveway when it is full. Engine oil level is not as critical as transmission fluid levels. If it was then there wouldn't be a 1.6 quart difference between the low and full marks. However, you should be careful not to overfill. BTW Toyota says to check the oil when the motor is warmed up BUT my owner's manual says it only needs to be off for 5 minutes before checking the level on the dip-stick. Two hours is ridiculous. Again as long as you don't overfill it, it's not that critical.

Thank you so much for your video. I have a 2016 Hyundai Veloster and I love this car! I want to take the best care of this car that I can. My goal is to have it last for the longest time possible...many years after I’m done paying for the loan. Maybe you could use a pointer to show the line markers on the dip stick and point out where the oil should be...it’s hard to see the marks on the stick!

Yes, it is very important to know how much oil your car burns. If it burns a lot, you may have to check it after the equivalent of each gas fill-up or sooner. If it doesn’t burn much, then checking every 1000 km or so may suffice.

In my mazda cx7 there is a considerable level difference between cold engine and worm engine. The user manual in fact clearly specifies that oil level should be checked with a warm engine. On worm engine my oil level is perfectly fine. On cold engine i would have to desperately fill up...whcih would in reality result in oil excess and subsequently damage the engine

This is the RTFM moment, my car scared the living crap out of me when I first went to check oil level, it seemed to be dramatically overfilled. After reading the manual which told me to check the oil right after turning off the engine, I was calmed. It seems there's a pressurized oil reservoir for the engine to tolerate the start/stop cycles with the turbocharger.

Every fluid evaporates, evaporation rate for Oil is 15% Max. Conventional Oils have higher evaporation rate and most of the full synthetic Oils. 100% synthetic Oils has lowest evaporation rate around 4% and requires extremely high heat. Full synthetic oil is not a same thing as 100% synthetic oil. Full synthetic oil is just synthetic blend or more proper term is higher quality conventional Oil.
