How to Check & Top Up your Oil in a BMW with no Dipstick

Hi, this video shows you how to check the oil level in a BMW with no dipstick. Then how to top up when the oil level is too low and then rechecking to make sure the correct amount of oil is in the car. The car in the video is a 2013 BMW 318i E92.

One thing to be careful about. When more oil is added the reading may not change right away so don’t keep adding oil. Drive it for a bit check it and check again. Once you see the gauge move you know it’s the new reading (level). At this point add more if necessary and repeat the abound steps.

Love my BMW - I check the oil level once a month and do an oil change every 6ooo miles which is half the recommended. Car is 7 years old and no trouble.

the coolant basin has a reading inside it under the cap on new ones like Mercedes, but some "older" have a stip dick inner. go figure, no fucking oil dipper but its got one in the coolant bucket

The point is how to count the oil capacity when the sensor is stupid. Because mine says oil level in 50% then it says 100% then it says 75% obviously I have a malfunction in the sensor and I am afraid that the only way to calculate the amount of oil is to drop down the oil and measure its weight and put it back

You do that when it is time to change the oil and all the filters with it. If it just a refill in between oil change intervals there is no need to change an oil filter.

Don't open the oil cap or add oil when hot. Moisture gets trapped inside the engine that way. Only open after it has cooled.

It's made like that so you can actually check the oil while driving. It will automatically tell you to add one qt. At that point you go somewhere and tell someone to add a qt or do it yourself. It's actually very convenient.

Niece's car flashed up the low oil warning, 'put one litre in'. She drove home and fortunately got away with it. I put two litres in and it showed less than half full. The only dipstick is the BMW designer who thinks this is a good idea. Check the level with engine running?! Start the engine to check and it seizes up because unknown to you, the oil had leaked out or been burned up. The bearings ruined at least. No easy way of pumping out sump oil either, I don't like it but it's what many fast fit garages do.
