Hey Adam: I really enjoy viewing your videos. It is really interesting for me to see a young man like you so interested and knowledgeable in cars that are from my driving experience. I also have a 1991 Jaguar XJS collection classic, and I previously had a beautiful 1987 Jaguar Xj6, but I am 70 years old. Wonderful automobiles.

Hi Adam,..I just recently started watching your videos about older Jaguars and I find that you always put a lot of good and useful information. Just last week I bought a 1982 Jaguar XJ6 with the "familiar" 4.2 liter six and the automatic transmission. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing your videos.

As always, an extremely useful video. Everybody knows that engine oil and filter need to be replaced at certain intervals, but few people know that the automatic gearbox also needs service. And it does not help that official dealers tell customers that the oil of the automatic gearbox does not need to be replaced because it is "for life". Too late and after a €3000 bill (minimum) they find out that the transmission maintenance is as important as engine service. In my case, I always take my jags at the ZF dealer every 50.000 km religiously. Some may say that the oil and filter last much more than that, but when I think of how expensive is to fix a broken automatic gearbox (and differential) I prefer to be extra prudent.

I completely agree! It needs to be changed much more often than people think.

A very good basic video. well done Adam. shame you did not go into oil condition and colour. E.g. If it looks like a strawberry milk shake, it's water contamination from the cooling system. not a common fault, but very serious. Colour and smell can also be important for diagnosis of transmission. Black/brown and smells burnt can tell you its time for replacement and also service is due (band adjustment, filter and oil change) These old transmissions are high maintenance compared to modern transmissions. Keep these great videos coming Adam.

Thanks Joe! My plan was to just keep it simple for this one. I have 2 transmissions that need a service so I'll go through the color and all that then. A video on adjusting the bands is a good idea too. Thanks for watching! 🙂

Thank you for a nice video and information about the amount between min and max levels. I added just a decilitre or two and it seemed to raise the level below min to the allowed level.

Hi Adam. I’m Mark from the uk. I found your excellent channel a few months ago. My Dad and I have been watching your videos and have been really enjoying the content you have made, it’s been fantastic watching as we’ve recently purchased a 1978 series 2 XJ 3.4. In the same colour as yours. It has been stored in a garage for the past 25yrs. We have managed to get it running after changing a few of the ignition parts, the distributor cap and internals etc. However it is missing the AED so won’t tick over when it’s cold. Hopefully we’ll find one and get it fitted soon. Can I ask you a question on the gear shifting? The gear shifter is stuck in neutral and won’t move between the gears. The Oil levels seam fine. Is there any kind of lockout? Does it require the break pedal to be pressed to shift gears? The brakes are fairly seised on so though it may be a contributing factor? Hopefully going the service there tomorrow. Thanks again for the great channel and all the informative content you creat, it’s great for people like myself who are just get started and try to find my way around these cars. Cheers Mark.

Hello Adam. I’m really grateful for your video. I have a problem with my 75 jag xj6. After a long drive (aproximatelly 250km) I lost all my transmission fluid. After I replace the fluid, the transmission shifting just in Reverse. The car is not moving in Drive or 1 and 2. Can you give me an advice please?

Recently i put new transmission oil in and it engages gear but wont move i think my torque converter is trashed what do you think? Sometimes it goes forward a little but not much you cant really drive it. If you have a similar problem or a solution can you make a video about it. Or give me advice what to do next? I love my 86 xj6 , but I hate the borgwaner transmission. I am going to try and a Ford or GM transmission with adapter to get the most performance out the car. If any one knows of such swap would love to hear about it.

When will you do an engine bay paint job? Waiting for you to do it to do my own, my brake servo and master cylinder completely destroyed my engine bay on the drivers side, bare metal, surface rust, live in Arizona and don’t consider the rust to do any considerable damage for another 20 years but it just looks ugly, wondering if any body would be willing to do that and how much it would cost ?
@LivingWithAClassic

When I put my 1977 XJ12 back on the road i painted the whole engine bay while I had the engine apart. I used combi color by rustoleum. It can be mixed to any color you like and even if you brush it on it stretches and looks very close to being sprayed. I did that about 7 years ago and it still looks great. I may do the same on the XJ6

I no this is a random question I have a classic mini is start straight away but when you put your put the gas it just cuts off have you got any ideas thanks mm
@LivingWithAClassic

Could be that it's running very lean or that you have a big vacuum leak. So as soon as you give it some gas (on an SU you really give it air first) it goes too lean and cuts out

Are you ever going to think about putting a manual gearbox in one of your jags?
@LivingWithAClassic
@LivingWithAClassic 4 жыл бұрын
I have concidered it however the kits I have looked at are a little to expensive for me at the moment. But maybe if a transmission completely fails in one of them or possibly in the 1966 S-Type since it has no transmission in it.
