I like this. Location is critical to a successful garden. We also bought for the location, there is a family park (green space with trees) on the other side of our fence for our kids to play. Thirty plus years later, as trees have grown and trees fallen due to nature, we adapted along the way as to what grows best in which area.

Hi Lar - I'm happy you liked it. Locating a garden is something that can get overlooked. And if it is overlooked, you've got to start all over!

I’ve made the mistake of thinking I had more sun than I did on one side of the yard. Tried to grow tomatoes and it was sad. This year will be better!

I have finally have tomatoes but bc it's been unseasonably cool nothing is getting ripe. I'd much rather have it too hot than too cold when I'm growing peppers & tomatoes

I have a location we are wanting to plant first garden on our .5 acres. Only thing is we have a pecan tree in the area. How much distance would you assume from branch line to garden edge?
@growitbuildit9 ай бұрын
Hi - I would probably go 50' if possible. The roots can really extend past the branches quite a bit. The only real risk you have though is if the roots from that tree come into contact with your vegetable roots.

Ask your local library about soil testing! They may know of resources, and then you wouldn't need to spend money on Amazon with soil testing. Our local library told my that Mizzou does soil testing at the extension offices for free!

I need to watch the whole video before commenting-- you totally go over how agriculture extension offices can test your soil.

Which direction should your rows run if you are on a slope?
@growitbuildit6 ай бұрын
Hi - I would have them run perpendicular to the slope. And would either use a thick mulch or small berms to reduce any erosion.
@thatsbo86676 ай бұрын
I’m sorry could you explain what a small berm is? Like I’m a beginner gardener haven’t even got the garden sketched out how I wanted everything is a little confusing
@growitbuildit6 ай бұрын
A berm is just a small hill to reduce water run off. Depending how big the slope is you could even terrace it

???? Which direction should your rows run?

Hi - I'm going to talk about that in the next video. There really isn't a single correct answer, as everyone's garden is a different situation. In general, you can do N/S or E/W as long as you don't shade out some plants by placing taller plants to the South of shorter plants. If my garden were on flat ground with complete exposure, I would run my rows E/W with the tallest plants in the back. My garden is a little different, as the corner faces South. Also, due to geography (elevation to the East) and other people's houses I don't get much sun for the first hour of the day. So, I have a row of Asparagus along the NE fence, and then cluster my tallest tomato plants in the back NW corner/wall. This keeps all plants in the sun as much as possible.
