I’m working on designing my wedding band and have been working at it for quite a few months - some of this advice is great and some of the “rules” are perfectly subjective. You make excellent points sir and from reading many of the comments, ultimately the #1 rule for designing/choosing your wedding ring is that it should make you happy and proud. It should be meaningful to you, even if it breaks some of the traditional “rules”!
@joelstatosky18173 жыл бұрын
This channel is marketed towards those who follow classical men's fashion and therefore most of these men look for the traditional way of doing things. I'm going for an 18k 4mm band with a milgrained edge and mirror polish. The wedding band's original intentions aren't to be flashy, that only applies to engagement rings.

@sharid765 жыл бұрын
The most important one to ask would be your man! Depending on his MOS (or job depending on his branch), would there be any conflict with wearing a wedding ring or any kind of jewelry on the job, or in uniform? My husband was a Heavy Equipment Mechanic when he (we!) was in the Air Force, and "NO jewelry of any kind" was the hard and fast rule, for safety. He got a 14kt 5mm white gold plain band when we married, as we both liked white metals, and he could of course wear if off duty. But, in 1976, there was no such thing as "alternative" metals, it was gold or platinum, period. Platinum was way out of our budget, and no matter what we got, he couldn't wear it to work. So, gold was it! Unfortunately, going against the grain, meaning other than yellow gold which was the "standard thing" in those days, went against US as well, as we discovered on our honeymoon (2-3 days after putting them on) that my husband was seriously allergic to the nickel in the White Gold! There was no way for us to have known that beforehand, as the only other ring he owned was a yellow gold high school class ring. There were no other white gold formulations available then, and we certainly couldn't afford to go right back out to the Jewelry store and buy new rings! "Two stripers" didn't make much money back then, even with dependents benefits, and me working part time. So, his band went into permanent storage in the ring box, and I kept wearing my rings, as I wasn't allergic to mine. About 10 years later, for our upcoming anniversary, I put a yellow gold band on layaway with my favorite jewelry store, and that was his anniversary gift. I also got a yellow gold band for myself, because I grew up in times when wedding bands "matched" for the couple. And mine was very narrow, and starting to show some wear. So, we finally both had a pair of bands that matched, and that we could both wear. Beginning in the following decades, silver bands began to be more than "cheap bands" and the alternative metals began to hit the market. Since then, I have bought him several different bands in different metals, to give him a choice, like I started to wear for myself. He actually now prefers a comfort fit titanium band with an overlapping circle pattern on top. The yellow gold band I got cut down to fit me, because he prefers the white metals, and I like the wider width, and yellow gold now. I have a fairly extensive collection of bands myself now, 99% found used on eBay, Etsy, and a couple of local pawn shops. A few new ones, in silver alloys that now don't tarnish, are much stronger, and hold a polish longer than traditional sterling. Several different styles, widths, thicknesses, and comfort fit or not. It's nice to have a variety to choose from to suit my mood, my wardrobe, and my general inclination! We're married 44 years coming up in July, and have decided that it's not rings that make us married, it's desire and determination. We wear what we like to have the signs to show the world we are dedicated to each other, so they know there's no need to think either of us are "available" to anyone but each other! Best wishes on your band selection. And don't worry too much about what "other people" think or say about your choices. In the end, it's what YOU think, feel, care for, and wear - not others! And thank you to both of you for your commitment to maintaining our country's safety. We appreciate your dedication!

I think there's a case to be made for alternative metals here. Anything blacked out or with a weird finish isn't going to look great and regular tungsten is (for me) always just a shade too dark, but cobalt, palladium, and even titanium are otherwise pretty good as white gold alternatives. Resizing is tricky but you don't lose anything on looks. And they're way tougher, which IMHO is what you want in a ring like this. Same logic as with clothes: for an evening suit you're only going to wear twice a year you can go with a finer material but for the pair of jeans you wear every day you really need it to be able to take a beating, and even 10k gold isn't so great for that kind of abuse. My wife and I have a pair of matching cobalt rings that look pretty darn classic but have yet to take on any dents or scratches. Just a quick opinion.
@kobudo6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I went with a white tungsten carbide since I do very harsh work with my hands, and gold (especially a white gold, like my wife's rings) is not going to survive. On the plus side, the white tungsten visually compares quite favorably to the 18k white gold that my wife wears, and she wanted our rings to look like they "go together."

4:05 A somewhat related observation I can offer, is that when a ring has a pattern, there will inevitably be a section of the pattern, which the wearer likes more than the rest of the pattern (of course, this is only natural) The issue which this leads to, is that the wearer will continually be adjusting the ring by rotating it, so they are looking at their favorite piece of the pattern; it won't be a ring they can simply 'put on and forget about'. Additionally, a pattern could make it difficult - or outright impossible - to re-size without affecting the pattern. My wedding ring is brushed titanium with V-shaped lines engraved into it; the polished lines contrast beautifully with the brushed surface, but, also mean it cannot be re-sized... When I lost a lot of weight, it eventually fell off my hand 😶😶😶😶 Unable to re-size it, I put it on my key-fob, and now wear a bIack brushed ceramic ring (I actually brushed it myself, keeping the outer edges of the ring polished) On the finger, it looks very much like the rubber wedding rings often worn by outdoorsmen/soldiers/etc... It's very subtle, low-key and inconspicuous, but those polished edges catch the light beautifully, and really imbue it with a touch of class and elegance 😍😍😍😍 More significantly, and to my initial point, I don't have to continually keep adjusting it as it rotates around my finger, as there is no pattern for me to want to always be looking for my favorite part 👍👍👍👍

I have heard that 19 k white gold can almost be as strong as platinum but doesn't form a patina. The jeweler I spoke with also mentioned that it's alloy will be whiter than 18k gold and that it doesn't require the Rhodium plating to maintain it's colour, making it lower maintenance. I was wondering if you know how the alloy changes to get these traits in 19k white gold, and if the claims of improved properties are fair?
@RubenRC945 жыл бұрын
I am not a jeweler but I just bought a white gold wedding ring. I don't think it matters if it's 14/18/19k white gold. Because gold is soft. The higher the K the softer it get. Platinum doesn't form a patina either that's silver. Platina is completely inert with air and 100% hypoallergenic. I think the alloy that your jeweler is referring to is a high palladium white gold. Palladium is a platinum group metal with much of the fame properties and color. Adding a high amount of palladium to the fold gives it a nice white slightly grayish finis. The color is all the way thtiu so no rhodium coating needed.

just for everyones information, sterling silver is harder and more durable than gold, what makes 9kt and 10kt and 14kt gold more durable than 18kt and above is that they have more silver giving them more durability Also, tungsten is very good as a wedding band material, as is titanium and other materials. You do not need gold just because this guy says you need gold

@sharidavenport528310 күн бұрын
Since I'm sure you've discovered since then, there's no such thing as 24kt rose gold. But for the benefit of others, gold out of the ground is 24kt after being purified and any types of other materials have been removed. It doesn't come out of the mine as rose gold. Rose gold is created gold, like white gold is, but it's done by adding small amounts of copper to it to change the color. Therefore, it is no longer 24kt gold, since it has another metal added into the mix. An 18kt gold mix, or alloy, is about as "pure gold" as it can get to produce rose gold, while 14kt rose gold is more common.

@sharidavenport528310 күн бұрын
Get yourself a jewelry polishing cloth, and use it whenever the scratches become troublesome. It won't damage the metal, or cause it to become thinner. It will only remove the darkness and the light scratches that accumulate from daily wear. I've been a Jeweler's Granddaughter all my life, and have a very large collection of rings made from all kinds of materials - gold of all the usual karats, silver of three different formulations or alloys, and few platinum rings, which are definitely more difficult to polish, either by hand or machine. Silver is the easiest type to maintain, but it's also the easiest type to scratch. A microfiber polishing cloth would be good for silver. Or a two layer polishing cloth, with one layer impregnated with a more aggressive polishing compound, and the other layer with a finer polishing level compound. Those you never want to wash at all, and you use them until they just fall to pieces, as the polishing compounds stay put. They are generally two colors, and can be had in several sizes. Get the largest kind you can afford, as there's no point in stinting on the amount of polishing you will be able to do with it. Too small, and it will be harder to handle too.

Hello what is the ideal weight in grams for a Ring?
@sharidavenport528310 күн бұрын
There isn't really any ideal weight for wedding bands per se. The weight of a wedding band depends on every factor inherent in the construction of the band, so trying to establish an ideal weight is practically impossible. The weight of any wedding band depends on the kind of material used; the amount of the material used to create the size needed to fit the finger; the width of the band; the thickness or rise above the finger of the band; whether it's a comfort fit, standard fit, flat on one side or on both sides; and the desired weight of the band in general. Some people prefer the lightest weight band possible so they have no sensation of presence of the band when wearing it; and others prefer a heavier, weighty feel on the finger as a reminder that it's always there. Any wedding band that weighs more than what is comfortable for your hand is too heavy. And any wedding band that is so light as to be too thin for daily wear is going to be too light weight. About 2 to 4 grams is about the standard weight of most wedding bands, depending on all those factors, but that's only taking into account the average sizes produced from the standard types of materials, not any particular weight standard. The difference in weight between a size 4 and a size 15 is unavoidable, depending on the material and other factors involved. It's kind of like trying to answer definitively the old question of, "How long is a piece of string?"

You keep asking this question even after getting a reply. The significance of a ring like the one you describe is strictly up to the person wearing it. Why not just ask him what it means to him? That's the only way to get a definitive answer. There's no way any of us could possibly know what the answer would be. The older standards rarely apply any more - anyone can make their own decisions about their own jewelry. Of course something really obvious, like an engagement and wedding ring type set worn on a woman's third finger, left hand, can reasonably be assumed to mean she's married, likewise a band of any particular material worn on a man's third finger left can be assumed to mean he's married. But since rings such as those you describe can have several meanings, it's best to just ask if it's that important to you.
