Just hover over the passive and hold Shift. Then you see the result in DPS. No Gold wasted.

you can just upgrade your spells with higer tier skill gems, no need to craft new ones

I know but if you want to compare how much dps the stat “add to skill level” is doing you need different lvl of the same gem to see dps diff that mimic the stat :)
