I have been finding all your videos super helpful. Thank you! Are there any resources (academic or otherwise) about raising children bilingually as a non-native speaker that you would particularly recommend? I have unearthed various books/papers, but I'm struggling to decide where to start. I studied linguistics at university and am always up for reading academic papers if they're the best option.

Thandi, thanks so much for watching the video and others! Unfortunately, I have never come across an amazing go-to resource for raising bilingual kids as a non-native speaker, but I did recently hear a great academic talk by Dr. Erika Hoff. It's not specifically about non-native bilingual parenting, but I'd say about halfway in she talks extensively about the differences ("language quality") and it was incredibly eye opening (although the entire thing is worth listening to). It was by far to date the most in-depth look I've seen on this topic so far: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGHIZGeFl7GSe9k It might not be exactly what you're looking for, but it's a start. I hope this helps!

@@LiveYourLanguage Thank you! I will watch it. The channel also looks like it has some other great material (though I've only glanced at the video titles at the moment.)

Some of the academic papers cited in Dr. Barbara Zurer Pearson's book 'Raising a Bilingual Child' were very interesting. Christine Jernigan's 'Family Language Learning: Learn Another Language, Raise Bilingual Children' was interesting as an introduction, but I prefer the approach and presentation of information in this channel's videos over that book, personally. One book that I definitely recommend both to you and Stephanie is 'The Toolbox for Multilingual Families' by Ute Limacher-Riebold which does not discuss much of the theory, but is just a toolbox of activities and games you can use and is intended for non-native languages as well as native. The 'AskTetsu' youtube channel could be interesting to you as well. Finally, although it is not directed for non-native speakers, I should mention Adam Beck's 'Maximize Your Child's Bilingual Ability', which is my favorite.

Wow, your non native language is French?? Wow how long have you been learning it? I’m leaning Spanish and would love to teach my son, but I had doubts given that I am not a native. Like you I plan to put him in classes with native speakers.

Thank you for watching! Yes, French is not my native language and I think all of us parents who raise their kids in their non-native language have the same doubts and insecurities you describe! I'd encourage you to check out one video i have on proficiency and raising kids this way and maybe it will ease your mind. I started French in 7th grade and kept with it until majoring in French in college and studying abroad for 6 months. I of course make mistakes all the time, but I'm getting better every day 🙂. Good luck!
