I like beyerdynamic m201 on snare. It’s a great mic. Kinda like a classy 57..

Yeah, since i got mine it‘s always on the snare. So much easier to soften the bleed.

Thank you for the great channel! For these kinds of particular shootouts it’d be maybe useful to hear the drummer applying more dynamics and sound variation. Playing ghost notes, rim shots, and different areas of the drum etc. to get a better understanding of the sound characteristics of each mic. That being said I liked the sm57 the best in this setting!

Thanks! You’re absolutely right. I shot this during a ongoing session in a rush. Should probably make an updated version. Will try to remember this input!

Haha it’s the owner of the building who owns that car. He now built a separate garage so we don’t have to have it in the studio anymore 😅

Pretty stoked on how good the 57 sounds compared to the rest of the mics. The 57 paired with a 541 could be cool. The darker weightier character of the 541 seems like it would be a nice compliment to the punch and air of the 57. Thanks for the vid, dude! Super helpful

Thanks for these demos . May not be pertinent to this video but consider demoing the Soyuz Launcher . Interesting little unit.

SM57 easily the best!! Wild. What a classic

With mics, depends on the context of the music being played. And what you are looking for, more dark sounding or scooped mid highs. And also the snare affects the sound a lot and the how the mic will deal with that. For metal the 57 is an all around. It's hard to f**k up things with that mic. And there is more expensive options of course, like the Earthworks mics. Those sound great. But, for the money, 57 it's a win win.

I've heard that the 57 UNDER the Snare is great. Maybe a mix of one on top and one underneath would yield more usable results.
@hoborec5 жыл бұрын
In a normal recording situation I always use both top and bottom microphone. But usually some large condenser on bottom. For this video I just wanted to highlight the top mic so I skipped the bottom.

I usually just double up the sm57’s or if space is an issue try to grab the granelli labs modified sm57 that’s got a 90 degree bend too it.

In my narrow mind... I’d rather listen to a slightly off sounding snare in a great song than the other way around. But on the other hand, I love a great sounding one as much as any other guy

Obviously! The song is more important than any mics. But I’m the sound engineer 🍺

Back in the day I experienced a love or hate attitude when it came to Travelling Wilburys/Jeff Lynns snare... is that still the case among engineers

Nice!! 57 man here, haha.... my question is... what mic are you using on the kick? That kick sound is SICK!
@jefflyon20204 жыл бұрын
The shure sm57 clearly,their also hard to destroy if it gets struck,a room mike with ribbon or pzm when mixed together never causes complaints,unless the drummer plain can't hit drum squarely.to kill ring start with dampening from the rim,it always starts near bearing edge,uneven hoop,out of round head,heads to tight.snare stand clamped to tight holding snare,that's my observations in studios.

What's the kick drum model/mic choice? It sounds huge!
@hoborec5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, it’s a Beta 58 inside on the batter head and a Neumann U47fet in front of the reso head. I guess the room mics also play their part.
@GreyManFaustus5 жыл бұрын
@@hoborec Wow, I'd be quite hesitant putting such an expensive condenser mic in front of a kick drum. And which kick drum did you use?
@assshakerstudios5494 жыл бұрын
@@GreyManFaustus U47's you'll find on the outside of kicks all the time! Pretty common TBH. That is if you've got one! The tube U47 or 48 is almost always my choice for an outside kick.... if I've got it available. No, I don't own one.... unless your buying that is! ;) You'll find many of the kick sounds you love will have a combo like that(D112 batter U47 outside, RE20 batter U48 outside, Beta 52 batter U47fet outside, etc.). Sounds better than using a subkick IMO, but everyone's got their prefs! Oh didn't see your post clearly, the resonant head is the outside head of the kick, not the inside(er, where the kick batter hit's the head is meant by inside bmd)-if that's what you meant!

@@assshakerstudios549 Yeah, maybe it's just me fearing to break expensive stuff. I'm used to the budgetest of budget gear, so I'm treating professional tools like the crown jewels. I'm well aware of which drumhead is which, though :D
