Wow i had the really bad headwind happen recently. i did not understand why it went "right" into the baseball field instead of staying streight on the fairway. Its opposite of what i would of guessed. Great vid

Great explanation! I threw a a Katana on about 330 feet of power this afternoon, and it went 392 feet, and about 25-30 degrees right off the intended target. I was baffled! This helps A LOT!!! Thanks!

I love these videos on this channel. The info is easy to understand and the visuals are also a great help. Great videos for beginners or anyone that just needs a small tweak, mine is managing wind. Disc golf is the most addicting thing in the world, yet frustrating at times. There is so much that goes into each throw that came become overwhelming at times. Wish you guys could put out more videos, I check for them everyday. You’ve been a huge help

first off, I love you're videos. they aren't too complex and easy to understand. and extremely helpful. I've been struggled with head and tailwind for some time. I actually had the concept reversed, which goes without saying, it was getting so frustrating. unfortunately, the person that helped me with tips of the game also struggled with the two winds. but after watching this video and applying the correct steps, I've emensly improved with windy conditions. still have a ways to go, but on the right path finally (no pun intended.) appreciate all the videos! you're my go to channel for info.

this is one of those things in science that's counter-intuitive but I know exactly what you're talking about because I've experienced this first hand it still blows my mind the Tailwind slows it down and a head wind speeds it up
@ArkaonCo9 жыл бұрын
Could you do a video on Grip and Release? I realize that's a much harder concept to quantify, but much like your video on What High Speed Driver to throw, you did a great job tabulating the data (looking at what all the pro's do) and then breaking down how that is relevant.

Another great video, thanks for posting it. I'd found this out by trial and error when I found that a more overstable Boss worked better for me in a headwind than a Tern, and I was wondering that Tern didn't turn over in a tailwind. This explains it all.

Your videos are excellent! Wondering if, after you've explained all 4 flight rating numbers, if you could create a kind of summary video. One that would pull together all of your previous topics and help an intermediate player figure out which driver model, plastic, and weight are best for him or her. Each video thus far explains one topic in depth. It seems that now we need to know which "topic", model, plastic or weight, we should focus on first to select our best driver. And then second, and so on. Or, perhaps it's more iterative and complicated than that. Either way, a final overview video would be awesome! Keep up the good work!

What about a video on disc on release angle? That could be (2 videos?) angle of release in the hand (anhyzer/hyzer) but I'm more interested in the up/down angle as seen from the side. For best distance you don't throw flat (say 0-10 degrees above horizontal) but what angle gets you the best distance? If it were a cannon ball (not aerodynamic) it would be 45 degrees. But what is best for a disc? Does it change based on mid-range, driver? or speed rating of the driver? or speed the disc is thrown at? I suspect some of these are true and I'd love to know all about this.

First of all, these are great. I have been trying to figure all this out and this is very helpful. Question 1) What do you do in a cross wind, right to left and left to right? Question 2) What if you have a head wind and you do a hyzer flip? Question 3) Can you do a video on how to drive farther? Like some common Bio-mechanical techniques. Personally I can throw just under 400' I want to be able to crush it, but I can't yet. What are the common do's and don'ts?

In previous video you mentioned that discs glide rating is also important when throwing up or downwind. I would like know more about that. Also you could make video about the fade characteristics of the disc. Then you would have covered all the base stats of the disc: Mass, speed, fade and glide
@pecosR0B9 жыл бұрын
***** typically higher glide does NOT fair well in headwinds - that's why discs like the Dynamic Discs Felon (3 glide), Latitude 64 Stiletto (2 glide), Discmania PD2 (4), etc. all have low glide numbers - they are wind fighters. If you throw an understable disc with a high glide rating into a tailwind it will just glide for dayyyys
@pecosR0B9 жыл бұрын
Enforcer - glide 4; Saint Pro - glide 7 with fade of 4, but HORRIBLE in headwinds. Higher glide with a headwind is not a good combination (generally). You and everyone else knows that 4 vs 5 could very well be the same rating - every manufacturer is different. Besides, many of the larger retailers online have their own number system that they feel is more accurate for each mold. I never said only discs with low glide fight headwinds better, I never even MENTIONED Innova as a brand, so I have no idea why you're asking if I'm suggesting that Innova doesn't make a high speed headwind fighting disc. Sheesh dude. Gators - aren't those have a glide of 2? XXX and Trident from Latitude - glide of 2. The Westside Giant is probably the most overstable disc I can think of with a glide of 5. A Westside World is less OS but has a glide of 4. It's relative man, I never said it's always the case and that it's the same as every manufacturer.
@pecosR0B9 жыл бұрын
You need to go back and re-read what I wrote.You are missing the point why I mention different companies and how not everyone agrees on one mold's glide rating. Did I claim that a high glide will never fly well in a headwind? I said "typically higher glides do not fare well in headwinds." I didn't say never, I didn't say at what number, I didn't name any molds. But a mold that comes to my mind is the Saint Pro - glide rating of 7 (is there an Innova disc with a 7 rating for glide?) turn of 0 and fade of 4. Just about anyone who has thrown one would say they would never throw that in a headwind. I also said the combination of a headwind and high glide is generally not a good combination. Your responses make it sound like I am stating that this is all fact and true for all discs. I merely made the broad generalization that USUALLY lower glide is a "better" disc for facing headwinds. But whatever man, let's just say you're right. You seem too vested in this, I mean this is a KZbin video we're writing a novella about. But at least you use proper grammar - it makes going back and forth easier.

Love your videos they have really improved my game. My recommendation for another video is how the glide of a disc impacts its distance performance in relation to its degree of release. for example will a disc with a glide rating of 7 like the latitude 64 river act differently than a disc with lower glide rating when released at 45 degree angle in an upward direction. It would be great to know more about this as I don't know whether higher glide discs will be more likely to stall out in the air verses something with a lower glide and vise versa. Further more whether higher glide discs should only be restricted to use in areas with low ceilings and ect. Thank you. and keep up the great work.

Glide measures the disc's ability to stay aloft... but if a disc has a high Turn rating it negates glide at slower speeds. I.E., higher air-speed is required to achieve optimal "Glide". BTW... great video.

What about increasing the disc speed instead of stability in a headwind? Like going from a 9,4,-2,2 Valkyrie to a 10,4,-2,2 Beast? Would that have the same effect as just increasing the stability?
@77gerry849 жыл бұрын
These videos are great, but where is the next one?
@tru47369 жыл бұрын
I might be confusing myself, but I believe you have the terms tailwind and headwind backwards. A tailwind is when the wind is blowing in the same direction as the object meaning it would increase the discs speed. A headwind means the wind is blowing in the opposite direction of the object, thus decreasing the discs speed
@bryancooper12449 жыл бұрын
tru he used the correctly. he mentioned that he was talking about air speed, with a headwind, since the air is moving the opposite way of the disc, it makes the discs speed higher relative to laying still. This is the same principle that makes 2 cars that hit each other at 30 MPH each the same as a car hitting a wall at 60MPH. Hopefully that made sense
@VojtechRozsival9 жыл бұрын
tru talking about air speed (speed of of the disc related to the air) you got it wrong. when you drive a car 40 mph and hit a wall, impact speed is 40 mph. if you hit car going 30 mph the opposite direction (directly against you) the impact speed would be 70 mph, i.e. the sum of both speeds. and it is the same with the wind. clearer now? ;o)

Excuse my ignorance, but why does a headwind, blowing in the opposite direction of your throw, increase the air speed of the disc? Wouldn't it slow it down just as in other sports? Punting a football into a headwind reduces its distance traveled in the air.
@GoofiG8 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking. Shouldnt it be the opposite like head wind 15mph should that be subtracted and not added ?????
@Bestdiscgolfdiscs8 жыл бұрын
+GoofiG Great question! What you are both referring to is the increased aerodynamic drag on the disc created by the headwind. Because discs are designed to create very little drag (so they can maintain their forward speed in flight) the slowing effect from a headwind is present but relatively small, and the disc continues to slice through the airmass. The impact of the increased relative wind velocity (airspeed) moving across the leading edge / airfoil, however, is significant -- generating additional lift force and decreasing the stability of the disc flight, thereby altering the flight path. Does that help?
@YourGrannysThong7 жыл бұрын
maybe I'm missing something here, how does headwind increase the speed of the throw? seems like tailwind would speed it up more than wind coming head on...
@Bestdiscgolfdiscs7 жыл бұрын
Hi BombsAway -- you are correct, a headwind will in increase drag, which will cause the disc (over time) to slow more quickly. A disc thrown into a headwind will not travel as far as a disc benefitting from a tailwind. What we are focused on, however, is the disc's Air Speed. Let's say a 70mph throw with no wind would decelerate from 70 to zero in 6 seconds, but a 70mph throw into a 15mph headwind would decelerate from 70mph to zero mph in only 5 seconds. The important point is that at every stage of the headwind disc's flight, it will behave (aerodynamically) as though it were traveling faster than the disc thrown with no wind. When first released, the headwind disc will behave as though it were thrown 70+15=85mph, and when it has slowed to 30mpg it will behave as though it were traveling 30+15=45mph. This does not mean the disc is actually traveling 45mph in relation to the ground, it simply means it is behaving aerodynamically like it was moving at 45mph. I hope that helps -- I know this can be a tricky discussion.

But BDGD! Its the side-winds that give me trouble and get me confuzed. :s
@abc_def-559 жыл бұрын
+User3rror This. I can usually pick the right disc and throw into a head- or tailwind, but crosswinds just make me go "umm... so... wind is coming from there so... that means... oh whatever, I'll just throw this since I'm holding it" :D
@andreaswunsche55929 жыл бұрын
+User3rror : The effect of sidewind is similar, but the equation is a little bit more complex because you will need to perform a vector summation. The result is always an increase of air speed and hence makes your disc more understable. But there is one major difference compared to head wind (for RHBH-throw): if wind comes from left it will help to carry your disc towards the basket, while wind from the right will in general shorten your distance by making the disc more falling/pushing to the ground. HTH :-)
@User3rror9 жыл бұрын
Andreas Wünsche Is that when the disc is on an anhyzer angle?
@andreaswunsche55929 жыл бұрын
Yes, with a slight anhyzer angle the side wind might carry the disc further if it has enough height from the throw.
