I do a little bit of everything and have found a smooth face 20 ounce heavy enough for the amount of framing and demolition I do, yet light enough for smaller jobs. I had a 22 ounce that walked away on a jobsite, and I replaced it with a 20 ounce Estwing rip claw hammer almost 30 years ago and it is still going strong. I just bought a 15 ounce Estwing Ultra series because I wanted a lighter hammer. It is heavier by 3 ounces overall than the 20 ounce and hits lighter. Not what I was thinking would be the case, but it is. I'm keeping the 15 ounce, I like the design and it's a change from the old one.

I’ve always got a solid handle hammer for basic repairs I went to work as a helper thinking my hammer was good after hitting 50 nails in and breaking off wood I ended up using their wooden handle because it was close and it felt light I was like this is weak but the same power I used with that hammer nocked the nail in one hit vs 4 with my hammer 22 ounces so yup I’m switching over to wood

When your waffle face gets worn down, take a file and run the edge along the valleys and make the waffle face reappear. Replacing a handle is about $6-10 and 30 minutes. I personally do not like fiberglass hammers, and I don't know a lot of professionals that do. You can't use them as aggressively as a wood, steel or aluminum handled hammer. For framing, the heavier the hammer, the better and easier they are to swing when you use the proper technique. Too many people use their entire arm or elbow, instead of a little bit of everything and a whole lot of the wrist, letting the inertia of the hammer do the majority of the work. I've always used a steel handled hammer for framing, and don't have a problem with it. Would I like to use a Stiletto or Martinez or another high dollar hammer? Sure, but I'm perfectly happy with the 20 year old Estwing steel 25 oz hammer. It's more than paid for itself, time and time again. For smaller jobs though, I'll use a smaller hammer, like hanging pictures, making picture frames, small intricate detailed finish carpentry, repairing old furniture. Typically in those situations I'll use a small, wooden handled hammer.

Perfectly said my man. Key points: The heavier the better (for the most part) Fiberglass is and always will be ass so don’t waste that $. Take care of your tools and they’ll take care of you Also titanium is overrated/overpriced.

Heavier the better isn't true. In fact with the right technique a lighter hammer can be just as effective as a heavier hammer, so long as the hammer has a good weight distribution. And a heavy, steel hammer is going to be harder on the arm, even with good technique. All else equal, a heavy, steel handled hammer is harder on an arm than a lighter wooden handled hammer. Not everyone is the same. Some guys, even with good technique, will eventually deal with problems in their arm if they swing a hammer often enough for long enough. Others will be less prone to this because everyone just isn't built the same. If you haven't run into any problems so far, that's great. But it doesn't mean that all the people who do just don't know how to swing a hammer

The embodied energy in the head of a hammer is not represented in the price. Buying a completely new hammer instead of hanging on a new handle is extremely wasteful of all that energy, the pollution it produced, etc.
