“Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, make something which is essentially your own.” -Bruce Lee I myself don’t believe in style anymore because SOME people today fight for their style, they believe strongly in their own style and avoid growing by learning other styles of fighting. I’m not saying this for everyone btw! The best style is no style :)
@7x34hj4 жыл бұрын
You are right. I often compare martial artists of a particular style with those of strong faith in a particular religion. They defend their martial art and make all manner of excuses no matter how many time it clearly fails. We should never have to 'make' a technique work or allow a technique to work. This is why we now have MMA and the like.
@linkgame2564 жыл бұрын
7x34hj Yes indeed! Well said! People say Bruce Lee is the father of Modern MMA and they are right. Bruce Lee began mixing styles very early on, because of his quarter German blood, some of the Chinese students in his Kung Fu class refused to train with him. He probably thought “Why should I not accept other styles just as you have not accepted me? Why should I limit myself to one style when they all have so much to offer.” These are not his actual words but it’s just what I think.

Dont mind me, just wanted to share my story of why im here and vent lmao; The real reason i wanted to take up self defence lessons was because i have severe paranoia. when i was in primary through middle school, my house had been broken into several times- one of which led to the death of my dog at that time who had just given birth. I'm also, in social norms, you could say an "attractive" looking girl. growing up i've always been told that im pretty. ive had several incidents where random men in their mid ages approach me and ask me disturbing questions. my stepdad when i was in primary school also bought me very VERY short/revealing clothing.. i didnt think it was weird until i was a little older when i realised that ive luckily escaped quite a ton of situations which coudlve ended much darker. now, im 17 years old and everywhere i go i cant help but feel like im being stalked or something. I'm really scared to move on my own next year, i tend to have severe paranoia/psychosis whenever im alone at home and i hear a slight rustle. this is why im taking up some sort of self defence lesson! so I want to do Kung Fu, the animal aspect of kung fu is really fascinating to me. also when i was a little kid, my favorite movie was kung fu panda (tigress is really badass)! Unfortunately.. im built for boxing i guess you could say. shadow,kick boxing all suit my natural fighting style.
@NoraTKD5 жыл бұрын
Hello there! Thank you for sharing your story! I think that you are a very strong young lady and if you have an urge to do and learn martial arts then go for it! Try kung fu if that is what fascinates you. Try women's self defense classes, there you will learn that aspect and hopefully feel much better and less paranoid because you actually know how to defend yourself. If you want then try boxing or kickboxing, those are less spiritual but they will give you stamina and confidence! Just go out there and find what makes you feel good, you can do it! :)
@tetsuaburaya46135 жыл бұрын
This is my opinion, but the best self defence to learn is Jiu Jitsu. Why? There’s a couple of reasons. The first is that striking especially for females who’s trying to defend against a larger opponent (men) are not that affective as biologically it’s harder to generate a strike that can hurt a guy, useless it’s in the groin. Another reason is that there’s a big possibility that the aggressor will try to grab a hold of you. With Jiu Jitsu this is useful as you learn many ways to get not submitted. And last is that most conflicts especially against untrained opponents one on one, there’s a good chance that it will end up on the ground. (e.g police arrests) Jiu Jitsu will allow both offence and defence to protect yourself on the ground. There’s a really good video of a Brazilian girl that was able to defend herself with Jiu Jitsu against man who had a knife. That’s just my thought on the best self defence martial art.

Muay Thai is fun, to me it kinda felt like a mad dash to the goal because from my first lesson to a couple years down the line you just keep piling on and mastering techniques. I also think that it’s easy to mix in other disciplines techniques because my main combos for when I fight (competitively) mix in Takewando kicking and sometimes a more western boxing stance. Now my personal “recreational” style (like a just in case something happens style) mixes in capoeira for mobility and misdirects and Muay Thai for hard straight forward hits. I’d like to learn shaolin Kung fu to mix and match. Anyway aside from rambling I think Muay Thai is kinda like a good on it’s own canvas that gets better with each brush stroke

In the list of the weapon-based styles, I would like to add the Haidong Gumdo, which is a recent korean saber style. It is halfway between traditional martial arts and the more "sportives" ones (such as taekwondo) : there are tournaments but they never includes non-choregraphed fights, for example. It's a very dynamic and photogenic style, and particularly technically demanding; whereas the kendo or the kenjutsu is based on duels, haidong gumdo is centered on the fight on the battlefield, against many enemies. It's a very young and still maturing martial art. It is however not very well-known, and it can be difficult to find a school (for example, there are only 400 practitioners in France). I love this martial art because it is beautiful. It is much more dynamic than the kenjutsu. It has not the competitivity of the kendo, and offer a beautiful group synergy (because no technique is practiced alone). I think it is hard to master, and particularly in its positions, but very joyful to practice. In contrary of many of the japanese martial arts, and as a result of its specialization (fight against many enemies), it has not the philosophy of ideally defeat the opponent(s) on the first weapons pass, and leave room for observation of the opponent(s) and the environment more than speed and aggressiveness. Sorry for the length of this comment ^^"

Learning martial arts is great do whatever you like but if your trying to use a practical art and also be as competent as you can in self defense. 1. Make sure there is live sparring/pressure testing. 2. if you want to be good all around for self defense you have to cover all zones of engagement. Striking, stand up grappling, ground fighting. But the biggest thing with self defense is situational awareness.

I used to practise WTF Taekwondo when I was studying abroad. I stopped because of busy college and church service schedule. Since it has become a lifestyle, I still practised at home especially the exercises although I would be inconsistent. I always avoid confrontations but I was forced to use it to defend myself. A crazed neighbor here in my country tried to attack me and I executed a well-timed yeopchagi to his abdominal area. That is a rare instance so I naturally got agitated but I managed to pull that off. I came to know later on that I broke some of his ribs and he was unconscious until the day after. I’m glad I found your channel. My interest in Taekwondo stayed the same. God bless you!

I practice / teach TKD, Hapkido, Modern Arnis, Derobio Eskrima, western boxing, kickboxing, Thai Boxing, BJJ, Japanese Jujutsu, Karate and Aikibujutsu. Aikibujutsu (Seiyo Ryu) is the ideal system in my opinion because it is a 'complete system'. Aikibujutsu teaches striking, ground grappling, stand up grappling / throwing, weapons (including firearm), and the psychology of warfare. The pro to Aikibujutsu might be considered a con to some. It is a by the strictest definition a martial art, like the old Koryu systems (bujutsu). It's not a system designed to help with self perfection / self improvement (budo). It's only goal is to teach people how to successfully deal with physical encounters.
@carlosarnold48094 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that you mentioned Ninjutsu on your list of martial arts styles since it is rarely spoken of on youtube videos that like to discuss the variety of martial arts styles in the world. I think the reason why is because some people don't believe it is a real style of combat due to exaggerations of it from movies, television, comic books, and games.
@NoraTKD4 жыл бұрын
That could be one reason of course, and that movies show that people are invincible/never feel too much pain when in reality even surviving half of those strikes is devastating. Ninjutsu is a great traditional martial art, I respect it and it's practicioners a lot.

It’s so many martial arts techniques that was made by an individual when they came up with it on the spot in random encounter Since we have the power to create our own moves which is how all these techniques of martial arts came into existence I say As long as your reflex and speed can turn into self movement as your body can move on its own at will without gout getting beat and you tap into mastery of self movement at last resort That’s the best self defense anyone pushes to have so they can handle any opposition to be on offense & defense without thinking

Krav Maga was developed to precision killing by the israeli special forces. It teaches you how to defend yourself against an attacker with bare hand/knife/gun and kill them. They know many of the most effective techniques.
@Infinite-zero9013 жыл бұрын
90% of Krav Maga involves dirty tactics. Like eye pokes, throat shots, and groin shots etc so they're trained to end situations quickly. I think women that train in that art is scary.

@NoraTKD4 жыл бұрын
Good question! You must have a kind of booklet or something that you got when you joined your club/type of karate and did exams etc. You shall have that and ask permission from your master to go to another dojo and let him/her know why do you want to move and when. Always be honest and straightforward. Then you might get some kind of feedback to your booklet about the change and when you go to the new club you can show that or you shall get a new booklet. Good luck!

I did taekwondo a year and then kung fu for another year when I was around 12. My kung fu teacher was a bully. He wouldn't clear the rules instead he punched my navel on third session. I continued a year being sneaky and not doing exercises out of my wanting to do them. If he had explained why we do exercises I would have done myself. I decided to quit because I ended up one on one and he was yelling insults. I don't function well with that. I go to a martial arts class to learn to defend myself against bullies not get one punched in the navel without having a black belt 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I guess I got the black belt from third session. What a troubled person my teacher must have been. Forced his other students to go to competitions O.o. I saw your vid on the macdojo 👌 . Fits the kung fu teacher I had. Like cobra kai dojo 100%. *facepalm* I did taichi 15 years after this incident. That teacher was way better. Taught internal kung fu. I did a year and then my schedule changed I had to stop classes. I just practice at home the form/kata I learned and do self learning off KZbin. I'm trying 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Amazing videos ^^ 🔥✨ peace

hello lady: what are the best martial arts for a 16 yo kid, for fights in school, fighting bullies my brother can't stand bullies anymore and I don't know what martial art should he play..? can you suggest one
@NoraTKD4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Well protecting himself against bullies is important. It would be best if the school itself would provide some kind of protection or if he could tell the teachers. If this is not an option, he still has to stand up against the bullies. So in a way any martial art would be useful that he wants to try: Taekwon-do, Judo, Karate, Jiujitusu all have self defense elements to them as well as other important things that will improve his stamina, self esteem and character.

I am sorry that your brother is on this situation. For fighting against several oponents at the same time the most practical ones are the striking arts. You can choose betwen boxing, thai boxing, kick boxing in general. MMA would be great as well but once again it is not the best idea to be grappling on the floor with one opponent while the other ones can kick you. Judo for the streets is amazing but very dangerous because if you slam somebody against the floor you can hurt them badly so its not the best thing for a kid to use.

I would love to do martial arts but I got back surgery a few months ago which totally fused my upper spine with a metal rod. I've had to face the harsh reality from my doctor that I cannot do martial arts and it brings me to tears every time that I've thought about it. It totally hinders my flexibility and risks the metal rod breaking in my back (at least until it's 100% fused with the bone). I used to be so happy for my flexibility before scoliosis ruined my life. It sucks being called names like "board back" and being made fun of by others who purposefully stiffen up their back and walk stupidly in front of you and the physical pain of my damn back is nowhere near knowing the fact that I'll be forever weak and defenseless. I want to be strong, and have confidence that if some pesky imbecile tried to mug or jump me that I could at least fight back, but that's never going to happen. It sucks, it really does, but I'm sorry I had to comment it here. I just needed to let my irritation out somewhere so please don't come at me for being a total pity party. Thanks for reading my long, tiresome comment.
