Congratulations as a high achiever & Gardner. Your East Texas Gardening Great Grandparents would be proud of you. My Mother is your Grandmother's sister. I last saw your Mother, when she was age 8. I live 30 miles from where your Grandmother grew up & spent time, as a 3 year old behind your Grandmother's shoulder in her 50's Chevy Sedan .I am a retired optometrist & hope to meet you ,when this virus is gone, and I am able visit your Grandmother. My high School Classmates from 1960-1965 are impressed with your skills shown your youtube videos. My wife says you have my hands and love for yellow water melons. God Bless

Very welcome! I normally agree seeded watermelons taste better, but they are developing seedless with a lot more sugar content these days! It’s surprising at times! Thank you for watching and for going to check us out on Instagram!

My uncle moody had a watermelon patch in TX. He would drive his melons to Oakland CA and sell out everytime. Folks would pay through the roof because we had orange and yellow meat watermelons. I wish I could get a good yellow watermelon in Oakland again. rip uncle moody.

Have you seen a Kajari melon? Kajari melons have a beautiful design on the skin and they also have stripes

Another sign of sugar content is something my dad called "sugar spots." He grew up on a farm that grew watermelons, and he showed me that sometimes you'll see small splits, about 1/4" long or so, where the rind has a little split-type opening-- and it's not to uncommon to see a drop or so of that brown "sap" there just like you can sometimes see at the stem. It is possible to get ones that are too sweet, with too many sugar spots, maybe a half dozen or more, and those may be overripe and not that great, but if you see a couple of sugar spots on a watermelon, that's a good sign of sweetness. They seem pretty rare anymore with sugar spots at big box stores, possibly for a couple of reasons, one the melons aren't that sweet because they were picked too early, and two, the growers may have separated out the ones with sugar spots because people who don't know what they are may think they're undesirable defects.

Always so happy to see a video from you in my subscription list! YES to seedless melon video. Thank you for the three tips. The yellow belly & black stem tips are new to me! I stopped buying because of getting several "green" tasting w-melons in a row. I'm totally trying this!

Great video. Until now, I had no idea how to pick a good watermelon. By the way, I have several hummingbirds coming to my feeders after watching your how to make nectar video. I had two questions about feeding hummingbirds. Do you use soap to clean the feeders, and when you take the nectar out of the refrigerator should you wait for it to be room temperature before hanging the feeders outside?

David Caldwell on the hummingbird feeders I often don’t use soap just because it’s hard to get it all off. Just hot water and a good scrubby brush. anymore I usually make just enough to fill the feeders at the time rather than make a bunch and store it, but if I do store it in the fridge I don’t wait too long to put it out. Just because it will warm up quick outside and not sure if it’s the best or scientifically accurate but I would think the little guys would enjoy a cool drink on a hot day 😁. I’m actually making an updated hummingbird nectar video this next week hopefully. I’ve learned a lot from online and hummingbird experts I know how to make it much easer and simpler than I have been. The recipe is the same but much faster and easier making process

I tried 5 different types of watermellon seeds this year in Central Texas and every one made softball sized mellons and then got end rot or the vines died and thats as big as they got. not sure what went wrong? Overwatering? Alkaline water/soil?
