How is this product different from mascara?

It's applied the same way but it's an entirely different formula. Mascaras (and some other temporary beard colors out there) are typically a silicon and water-based formula. The problem with that is silicon and water evaporate very slowly and require at least a 5 minute "setting time" for it to cure. The other problem is that, being a silicon and water-based formula, the ingredients and pigments are normally water-soluable, meaning they will run with sweat, moisture, rubbing, and stay sticky for quite a while (hence the mascara drips when someone cries). Our formula is alcohol-based. This means we can use more durable and water-resistant pigments and ingredients that stand up to typical moisture. It also means Volt dries within 30 seconds as opposed to the 5 minute curing time of mascara, and won't smear or stain when rubbed or wet. Really, the only thing similar to mascara is the little brush lol. hope this helps!
