That was great to watch. I have chopped wood for over 50 years, but that was a great tutorial. I guess you mostly split conifers. Here it tends to be more deciduous & I find deciduous easiest to chop when just felled. I also find different woods & different sizes of log like to be split by different axes, so experiment. If one type sticks, but doesn't split, try something different.

That outline you made of the knot in the wood looks pleasingly familiar. 😉 And they can be a challenge too. BTW, if you haven’t thought of this already, have you thought about a Kickstarter campaign for a line of Nicole Coenen signature axes? Just an idea.

I miss having a fireplace in my home, in part because it gave me more reason to split wood, and I miss splitting wood as both exercise and stress relief. On larger rounds, I defaulted to the outer chops pattern most of the time, partly because I rarely had coniferous wood to split. The Emerald Ash Borer has killed off a lot of Ash trees, so friends have "standing firewood," or Ash trees that are dead enough that the wood can be split and burned almost right away after felling the tree. I have two primary splitting tools--a four-pound splitting maul and an eight-pounder (a Fiskars, like one I sometimes see you use). I use the lighter one to warm up or when I want more accuracy, and the big one for when I really want to beat up the wood or when I have a piece of really stubborn wood. I have one of those star-shaped wedges, but I didn't use it much.

I have no idea what I watched that made KZbin recommend this to me but I have to say... those shoulders are incredible. Wish mine looked like that. Problem is everytime I've chopped wood in the past I've inevitably gotten blisters on my palms- is there a method to avoid this or do I just need to build up calluses? Maybe a better axe handle?

up here in the interior, I cut mostly fir and birch. I cut the wood in the summer and then let it sit until fall. I'll pick a nice frosty morning to start splitting because the moisture in the wood is frozen and the rounds tend to fly apart better...at least it seems that way to me LOL. Stack it and that's next winter's burning.

There is an exception to your water content, making it harder to split the Madrone tree which I encountered in southern Oregon split really easily when it was wet it would almost explode when you hit it, whereas if it dried it took you forever to split a round.

Yes when you are splitting wood search for the checks in the wood don't make those your first hit hit in line around the edge the center is already split you want to hit the edge where it is not split and when you split your round turn the bark towards you so you don't keep hitting your handle all that being said I love your videos thanks

Years ago, a friend and I were living in Woodland Park, Colorado heating with wood, when someone gave us a pickup load of elm about 18 inches in diameter. that was some of the toughest splitting we have ever done. we got 3 wedges and the maul stuck in one. Ended up using a couple hundred grains of black powder and some cannon fuse to get them out. Didn't even split the wood! just loosened it enough to get everything back.
