Just a quick add-on: if you don't want to always adjust the "root note" of every chop, go into EDIT -> LAYER - > PITCH TB: and change it to "NO PITCH". To Daydream: Beautiful videos. Haven't seen more "clean" videos on samplers than yours. Very, very well done!!

reacquainted myself with the ASR 10 this weekend when my daughter needed a practice piano. So I found a piano kit with the Ensoniq CDR-11 set. After I got that done I decided to work on chops. Non destruct edit was something I just realized with the params only copy. Wish my Akai's did this.

Nice. Love your channel. The asr 10 is one of those things that was always behind the scenes in hip hop and some rnb/pop. I like how it automatically resamples the sample and amps it and gives it some secret sauce. I’m trying to make a program that can sequence like the asr and have an easy work flow, as well as find the perfect effect chain to resamples like asr does. Basically recreate the asr as best as I can. If not, I’m always on the hunt for a cheap to decent priced asr 10. Much love. Keep in the grind

I got recently a beautiful ASR10 rack, and just stumbled on your video. Very useful! The process is sure a bit convoluted by today standards, but it can be done very fast once you are familiar with it, and the sound is ALWAYS well worth it. I hope you can get do more in depth technical / tutorial videos on the ASR10 soon!

We didn't do much chopping on the asr, we used it more for one shots and mixing the build in drum sounds with short loops. The asr had great built in drum sounds, the side stick sample is a really iconic sound for west coast hip hop, you hear the asr all over Freestyle Fellowship and other underground west coast music.

Non-destructive sample editing was one main feature that Akai samplers didn't feature, I really wish that MPC-2000 had the feature. I'm pretty sure that many users requested when they were around (I'm taking about the original Akai Professional (RIP), not name-sake-only Numark-Akai), but they didn't bother with it.

Nice vid. I have an ASR 10. Bought it about 3 years ago. It sits in my room/ studio collecting dust. It wasn't my intention not to use it but I instead use Reason 10. I never got around to learning how to operate the ASR. If someone is interested in getting it off my hands, entice me.

Hi there! I'm currently learning the ASR-10 and I've used the exact workflow that you describe in this video to chop stereo samples but I keep on having the same issue: once the WS has been created, it turns the original to mono (left channel only). I've turned all FX off. I just can't figure that out - could you please enlighten me on this? (Latest OS running).

if you want the ASR10 colored sound, could you just use the sampler, then export to your computer and use the samples with a modern sequencer instead like maschine?
@jimwates8047
@jimwates8047 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I've said this before but, you can't Autoloop with samples stereo linked together. Why is that? You literally have to chop them individually. Actually, do 1, then then chop to same length. If you get some clicks, chop opposite sample and lengthen according to that sample. Sometimes when you chop a loop, when the sample starts looping it will seem to drop in volume. All you have to do is either decrease or increase the loop by one or two. Auto loop function is great in these machines. Hope I made sense!
@TheDaydreamSound
@TheDaydreamSound 5 жыл бұрын
What's up Jim! Thanks for reaching out!! I haven't experienced that. Have you manually linked the samples?
@jimwates8047
@jimwates8047 5 жыл бұрын
how have you been? Yes, I manually stereo link the samples. What happens after I enable Auto Loop function, instead of finding zero crossings, it just goes one sample at a time. So I usually have to do the left side first, then truncate the right sample to the length of the left side.
@jimwates8047
@jimwates8047 5 жыл бұрын
What also happens when editing stereo loops, is sometimes after the loop point, I don't know if this is the right explanation but, it can start to sound out phase? Or the volume drops a little? I either extend the loop by one or two, or decrease it. Then the sample sounds the same all the way. Kind of tells me the loop isn't in the exact tempo. Cause when you it stops sounding like that, I can p!ayn it with a metronome and it loops perfect.

Anyone know if it's possible/how to use the numeric keypad to enter sample start/end times? On the OG EPS, specifically, but I'd presume the 16+/ASR10 too. There are numbers with the function keys, so I assume it can be used that way, like "hold down x and you get the numbers" but I dunno what. With the sample start selected, if you press a number key, you get the function associated with that button come up instead.

great video, thanks! just started using my eps 16+ for sampling again after a few years and needed a refresher on chopping... but I did want to say that if you plan on making lots of chops, you can change the pitch table for the whole layer to no-pitch so you don't need to keep adjusting the root key for each wavesample.

I'm wondering why you spent so little time editing the start end points of each chop. Isn't that the main work in chopping? Maybe i don't don't get it and it's a workflow thing on these older machines. I'm trying to get an insight into the idea of chopping by ear vs waveform.
@TheDaydreamSound
@TheDaydreamSound 3 жыл бұрын
What's up!!! Thanks for reaching out! This video is about the unique process of chopping on the ASR-10. In other words, the idea of copying wave samples without using any additional memory on the ASR-10. This procedure is specific to the Ensoniq trilogy line of samplers (the EPS to the ASR-10). It's not a tutorial on chopping samples in general. However, in regards to your question, the process of editing start points is a matter of skill and experience. You get faster at it with time. For some it takes awhile for others it's near instantaneous. You’re essentially listening for the parts you like and starting there. If anything it’s the absolute easiest (creative) part of chopping samples. As far as using you ears, the principle is still the same with newer samplers. Out of custom, I use my ears whether there’s a new/software sampler with a graphical representation of the waveform in front of me or not. It’s just a matter of personal preference for the user. The only benefit of using your ears is it’s more of a musical approach and can be used in any circumstance. Hope this helps! TDS www.thedaydreamsound.com
