I worked on pools for 5yrs back in the early 90's. Here in Beaumont, Texas (Bevil Oaks community), due to heavy rain a particular dam was opened to avoid catastrophe and delivered 3ft of water to Bevil Oaks. The final product produced a ton of *black* pools that were FULL of debris, snakes (etc), and complete misery! After TONS of chemicals, constant testing, and sore muscles, I was very proud of the outcome of my services!

That was what mine looked like ! I recently bought a house with a "pool" that hadnt been serviced in about 3 years. It had fish , turtles , frogs and probably the Creature from the Black Lagoon.. I worked hard at it but wasted a lot of money on chlorine trying to add it gradually and finally saw a couple videos on the slam method. Finally got it cleared after brushing it twice a day, vacuum and high chlorine till it died. Thanks for the video

thank you so very much for this amazing step by step 'rid of the green' video. I used your transcript and created a document to ensure I did not miss any steps or any of your suggestions. I am especially grateful that your tutorial did not assume any prior knowledge, which is great for new / armature pool owners like myself. Also thankful for the pool water education! Thanks for explaining how algae forms, ways chemical work / react and the importance of proper preventive maintenance. Well it is day 4 and I wish I could post my before and after pics! My pool is once again crystal clear, thanks to your comprehensive instructional video. Again, thank you and please know how appreciative I am for the thought, planning and time you took to create this extraordinary video to help others. God Bless!

Thank you Linda B, we are glad the video was of help. I really think this is easiest method especially if you just get a little algae bloom. The key is to test regularly and the 3 key items to keep in balance are Chlorine, CYA and pH if you can consistently keep these 3 values in the proper range then your pool maintenance should be quite easy. Or never could afford to maintain one. Well once I did but it was a like a shity Walmart pool. This one is in ground. 4-9 feet! The pump is in a separate little shack. And it actually works. It's a jacuzzi brand. Hopefully I can get this fixed within a month so the kids and I can swim. So Fucken excited

20000 gallon vinyl pool, in as bad a condition as the one in the video. I couldnt drain mine since its a salt pool and i didnt want to destroy my grass. I Used the SLAM method per directions. Took me 30 gallons of chlorine and once it was like blue milk, 2 weeks of filtration to get it crystal clear. Though i got rid of the cartridge filter my pool came with and got an 18" Hayward Sand filter w/ 1hp matrix pump, and i purchased the 40,000g version of your Inyo Salt Generator. Its running at 48" power during the few hours its on to keep the pool chlorine level perfect. Thanks Guys!

Thanks a lot!!! After a couple of days of heavy showers in my city, my water became very cloudy and green and I turned it into crystal clear water less than 3 days after my ex-pool cleaning guy told me after looking at my water for 3 seconds only solution was to replace all the water (of course for a hefty fee), I said the hell w it and lost my fear of opening my filter, Thank god I did that. My 2 cents worth for people trying to clean their pool: 1-Backwash/clean your filter before doing anything and run the pump overnight 2-Add the algae remover you prefer and shock at least twice 12 hours apart, I did it 3 times to make it safer 3-Backwash you filter again and add water clarifier, keep running the pump 24 x 7 all this time until crystal clear 4- Full clean/wash your filter at the end. Check your php and chlorine levels daily during this process and adjust accordingly. 5-Once clear, run pump 8-10 hours a day depending on your environment conditions, you'll be amazed as how easy it is to DIY... Good Luck and thanks for the honest pool cleaners around...

I have a 30,000 gal. pool that was a slightly less extreme version than in the video abandoned by the former owner of the house and I hammered it hard with chlorine, but was left with very cloudy water for a week. From top to bottom the particles of dead algae were very thick. The filter was just not helping clear it up after that time so I used flocculant and let it sit for 2 1/2 days after recirculating for 3 hours. Miracle stuff. The water turned crystal clear and the bottom was covered with the dead algae. Took two days of vacuuming very slow and carefully on waste/refilling with fresh water and now the pool looks amazing.

Hi, thanks for the great video! I have a 10k gallon indoor heated lap pool that is in trouble... It had minimal use, and chlorine was kept low. Pretty easy to maintain until a bunch of teenagers turned the room and the pool into a party place (of course grown ups were out of town!). Long story short: horrible algae bloom, and zero (unmeasurable chlorine). Coming back I started SLAMing: shocked it with initially 6 gallons of 8-9% liquid chlorine, and kept monitoring and repeating for many days -at the end, it had more than 40 gallons of chlorine poured into it!- until it finally passed the OCT. Meanwhile, pH has been dropping fast. By the time I got the chlorine to stabilize, I had an acid bath (pH

Thanks a lot! Things seem to have gone from bad to worse during the day. I had the Cl under control through yesterday until this morning, but it has gone down dramatically during the day :/ Current chemistry is: CL: 1.0 to 1.5 pH: 6.8 Total Alkalinity: around 500 (is this even possible???) I only have a simple dual test kit and a Master Pool Multitest 1200V, so I don't have more data to give you. I'm starting to think that the reagents in my multitest have gone bad. I can take some water to the store tomorrow to get a complete analysis.

We started the year with a fairly clear pool, Then it went very green, we tried shocking and using anti algae. It cleared a little but still partly green, did a lot of more shock Chlorine reading was negative and this happened several other times so then changed the sand in our filter tank. Back washed and added shock . Next morning pool lot better but cloudy . Chlorine reading OK . The following morning pool still cloudy Chlorine reading once again negative, not sure what we should now be doing . Weather at the moment is 35 to 40 degs . We leave summer cover off in the day but cover at night, Any help would be greatfull Friendly regards Royston Watkins ( France )

Thank you for this excellent video. My 35,000 gallon pool was pretty green and following your video I was able to pretty much clean it up. The first day lots of the algae was gone. But there's now a very small amount left on the walls and it appears that it will stay there. I'm still shocking my pool, brush the walls twice a day and clean the filter every day. I just don't know why this small layer of algae won't go away.

Does it lighten up if you rub a chlorine tablet on it? If so, it should continue to lighten up if you keep the chlorine at shock level. You can also try rubbing the stain with a pumice stone if it's a gunite surface.

@@Inyopools Thank you SO MUCH for your reply! I do have a gunite surface. Using a chlorine tablet is a fantastic idea and I'll try that today. I also have a stainless steel swimming pool brush for algae and when I use it, it comes off slowly. We also just acid washed the entire pool. The algae problem started after that acid wash, interestingly.

Been using the SLAM method since 6/30. Results for water: FC: 16 CC: .5 CYA: 40 PH: 7.7 TA: 120 Pool is still cloudy in the deep-end with a tint of green. Been like that since 7/6. Any suggestions on getting it clear? I brush and vacuum a few times a day (vacation) but nothing. The Hayward C3030 was installed on 6/30, starts at 12PSI and haven't got up since. Cleaned it every 2-3 days with very little debris... TFP folks say I don't have to clean the filter since it's not over 25%. Should I just leave it or clean it every 2-3 days? Pool is a 23K IG.
@Inyopools
@Inyopools 6 жыл бұрын
Are you running your pump 24/7 or a set time each day? Even though all the algae was dead, the pool in the video took quite a long time to clear up completely (several weeks). It sounds like you're heading in the right direction by installing the Hayward C3030. I would continue to clean it every three days until the pool is clear. Also, make sure you're not brushing your pool and then immediately vacuuming afterward. When you brush it stirs up all the debris that has settled to the bottom. Always vacuum before brushing. You could always try adding a clarifer (goo.gl/eDcmz4) which will coagulate the small dirt particles and make it easier for your filter to grab them. Just keep at it, It will get there. Let us know what happens :)

Been running 24/7 for since 6/30. Added clarifier this morning but still the same. Getting impatience with this pool. LOL! Also been running a dolphin dx4s and it's not picking up anything in the pool floor beside 1-3 acorns. Cartridge on that is clean also. Moving FC to 21 tonight to see if it'll be any different. Don't know why but during the night, I only lose .5-1 FC... Would expect more if the algae are still hanging around.

@Inyopools
@Inyopools 2 жыл бұрын
In most cases like this, it would be easier to drain the pool. There are some scenarios where it makes sense to go the route in this video. One, there may be water restrictions where you can't fill up thousands of gallons. Second, it can be very expensive to replace all of the water. Some chlorine and physical labor could be the way to go.

And another thing, chlorine has a PH level of 11.0-13.0. It's not the actual chlorine that raises the PH but because Sodium Hydroxide ( Lye ) is produced. Chlorine is more effective when the PH is between 7.5 - 7.8
@Inyopools
@Inyopools Жыл бұрын
Pretty much every test strip kit available marks the desired pH range 7.2 - 7.8. If you are really persnickety about the pH range, you can pinch yourself to 7.5 - 7.8. But most pool owners or pool maintenance person wouldn't fret if a strip shows 7.3 for a normal test.

Any advice on cleaning of a sand filter or do you just empty it and replace the sand at algae levels this high?
@Inyopools
@Inyopools 11 ай бұрын
It depends on the health of the sand in the filter. If the sand is only a year or so old, I would go through the algae cleaning process and then access it afterward. If the sand is not thoroughly gunked, then you can keep it. But if your sand is 3-5 years old, you may get one to two shock cycles out of it before replacing it.

@Inyopools
@Inyopools 3 жыл бұрын
Adding shock to the pool will kill the tadpoles and the filter will catch them as the system runs. The other option is to scoop them out into a bucket and take them to a pond. Most people opt for the shock treatment.

Hi I have 22x52 and it is very very green my pump didn’t work correctly last year I gave up and closed it early , could you give the measurements on how much bleach to start with !
@Inyopools
@Inyopools 5 ай бұрын
A short answer guess: "A lot." You're going to need a lot more than just bleach. First, you need to balance your water chemistry before you think about adding chlorine/bleach/shock. The chlorine is useless if the pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer levels are off-kilter. I suggest using our how-to guide article, which thoroughly reviews each step with charts and explanations: www.inyopools.com/blog/how-to-clean-a-green-pool/?Keywords=how+to+clean+green+pool

I would go with the pH value down as much as to 6.8-7 for the SLAM process. With the pH value as high as 7.8, about 80% of chlorine in the pool will exist in the form of hypochlorite anion, and only 20 % in the form of hypochlorous acid. The hypochlorous acid is nearly 100 times stronger a disinfectant than the hypochlorite anion, so you will probably want to maintain high levels of hypochlorous acid for the SLAM process. Once the SLAM process is complete, one can either increase the pH level back to 7.6 (for concrete pools), or maintain lower pH levels for plastic pools which will allow you to keep slightly lower Cl levels over time. What I especially like about your video is that you have mentioned the relationship between CYA and chlorine: I cannot stress how much important this is, especially for owners who use TCCA tablets.

Great point Taavi! If a pool is neglected for a long period of time (4 years in our case) draining the pool and adding new water is sometimes the better option. However, if a pool owner is using city water, the bill for filling a 30,000 gallon pool could be more than the cost of chlorine. We will be releasing a How To video covering the method of water replacement and acid washing in the near future. Thanks for watching!

Depending on the pool type and your environment, completely draining a pool could actually damage it. For example, an older liner will shrink and possibly rip when you try to refill. Or if you have high ground water, a plaster or fiberglass pool could float out of the ground.

Extremely rare for a pool to pop out here in California. Rule of thumb - if there is more than 4 inches of muck, dirt and crap on the bottom - drain, acid wash and refill. Would have drained this one, although it makes this a cool green to blue video.

@Inyopools
@Inyopools 3 жыл бұрын
To prevent the green pool, make sure your free chlorine level is always in the 2-4 parts per million range. I would test it every couple of days until you figure out how much chlorine is needed per week to maintain those levels. As far as treating it, add lots of chlorine. The video will explain how to test the chlorine level that is needed to kill algae. You'll know the algae is dead when the pool water looks milky white. That means the algae is dead. Then you need to run the filter 24/7 and clean it multiple times a day until it clears up.

Bought a house with a pool that the previous owners never used ( I think). It's about 20000 gallons and I've got it to go from light green to cloudy blue. I've put all the chlorine they had in there ( except the bucket of pellets). I thought that maybe I put in too much but it still isn't clear. I've brushed , skimmed and vacuumed...going to put two more shock bags in tonight, if that doesn't do then I'm not sure what the problem is???
@Inyopools
@Inyopools 3 жыл бұрын
If it is cloudy blue, you've killed the algae. Now you'll need to filter out the dead algae. I'd recommend using a water clarifier. If you add that and clean the filter multiple times a day, the pool should clear up quickly.
