If you plan on doing this a lot, it's important that when you use the pliers you actually pull the tines from the other side of the kalimba between the bracket and the topmost bridge and lift the tine so it doesn't scratch the wood as it comes down. This tine lifting technique is only possible on the far left and far right tines, so you won't be able to remove any of the middle tines this way until you get to them. And cover the pliers in a tissue or a napkin or something soft so the teeth don't scratch the tines over time.

little tip, DO NOT USE PLIERS! you will scratch up the finish and have more problems to deal with lather down the line, your giving yourself more problems, try to take tem out as CAREFULLY as possible, if you need to use pliers then wrap them in something so that the teeth do not scratch up the prongs...it will look terrible and will give you rust after rust after rust and hence more problems for yourself.

For me, it didn't affect the sound of my kalimba 😊 You could also not remove all the tines of your kalimba if it doesn't have any rusts. You could just wipe the tines of your kalimba with any metal polish such as wd-40 or pledge ☺️

Hi! I have a Muspor Kalimba. I just bought it last March 2020. I exposed it in outside of its case for how many days. Kalimba tines lost its shine. I cant get it go back to its condition before even though I wipe it with its cloth. Can you recommend something to restore its shine? Few parts of the tines are also infested by rusts. Help. Thanks.

Hi! 🤗 sorry for the late reply. You can try wiping the tines using pledge metal polish, that's what kalimba users usually use to clean the tines of their kalimba. WD-40 can remove rust and protect the metal from rust. You should also store your kalimba inside a case and put silica gel. ☺️

@@RaissaRevote WD-40 does not protect from rust. It’s a temporary water displacer (what WD stands for). How you use WD-40 is to clean the metal and then you must add a protectant suitable for your instrument. If using metal polish is standard Kalimba care, then use the metal polish afterwards.

Hi! I haven’t tried sandpaper yet ☹️ but other kalimba players also suggest that sandpaper is okay. I suggest using sandpaper gently as to not damage the coat of the tines 😊

@@tinelime0009 do not use pliers at all then you wont need to worry about sandpaper or rust as using pliers damages the coating and will give you more problems, yes its easy but its bad in turms of looking after your instrument

please help me! After months of not using my kalimba, I found that it had rust on it. I searched on the internet what to do to remove rust, and it showed that putting vinegar helps, and I was foolish enough to do it. Help me! I brought my Kalimba when the pandemic started and I always touch the tines above the bridge and their blurry now and it looks like its dried into it.. I know, big mistake. The tines are shiny and reflective, right? But mine's blurry now and I tried to wipe it with the soft cloth (like the one used for glasses) the kalimba came with but it never came off! I dont know what to do and its pretty sad because this is my first ever kalimba.. Im thinking is putting oil on it and wiping with soft cloth will bring it back to normal?

hi! i’m not sure if i got your point right 😅 but yes you could try wiping the tines with a little bit of oil or you could also try using a metal polish because it’s mostly used by kalimba players to clean their kalimba tines ☺️

@@RaissaRevote Ginawa ko kasi saakin , Nilagyan ko nang small amount of oil sa tissue then pinunas ko sa tines tapos kiniskis ko nung sand paper. Nilalagyan ko din nang small amount of oil regularly. Pero now hnd ko nalagyan kaya nag rust ulit siya.
