Excellent video. Very thorough. You even remembered the small details that alot of people miss, as in cleaning the mating surface of the TB and intake, also replacing the gasket.
@johnaclark16 жыл бұрын
Some manufacturers don't want you spraying the cleaner directly in the TB because they have special grease on the shaft that can be washed out. Spraying on a rag and wiping it is the preferred method. Also a lot of them have special coatings that can be removed by some harsh cleaners. I'm not sure the scotch brite would be good to use on something like that so be sure and check your service data before cleaning. Lastly, some vehicles it is impossible to readapt the TB learn values without an expensive bidirectional scan tool (like VCDS.) You can end up with some wierd stuff going on with idle. Honda, for example, will not learn the idle without the bidirectional scan tool.
@sony123451115 жыл бұрын
Actually a way around that with Honda is doing a ECM relearn by disconnecting the battery ends and touching then together for 15-30 mins. That forces the car to relearn everything.
@johnaclark15 жыл бұрын
@@sony12345111 Nope. That does not reset the PCM, nor does it clear the TP data necessary to do an idle relearn. Been there done that and it doesn't work. I've tried it. I can say that definitively on an 08 Odyssey 3.5L V6. It clears all the stored codes and may clear some other data I'm not aware of but not the TP data.
@sony123451115 жыл бұрын
@@johnaclark1 interesting, we do that at the dealership all the time because it's faster then finding a scan tool. I haven't had to do it that often but on the two cars I tried it worked
@johnaclark15 жыл бұрын
@@sony12345111 Yeah, when I finally got the scan tool that would do the job it has a data PID that allows you to see the status of the idle relearn. Disconnecting the battery and holding the terminals together would not put that PID into "learning." It stayed at complete. Only a "PCM Reset" or "Clear TP data" would change it from "complete" to "learning," followed by "complete" after about 10-15 mins of idle with no loads on.
@johnaclark15 жыл бұрын
@@TheRobertChannel It's not false information. I have an 08 Odyssey that would NOT relearn the idle until the TP data was cleared with the scan tool. The idle learn PID stayed at "complete" until I reset with the tool and it then changed to "Learning" and then 10 minutes or so of idling changed to "complete" and was fixed. I tried your method. It didn't work. Trust me, I tried everything and ended up having to buy a bidirectional scan tool. Once I cleared the TP data all worked well.

The difference that doing a throttle body adaptation can make is amazing! In SA we have a lot of Mk3 Golfs/Jettas and "Citi Golfs" that use the Bosch MP9 EFI system. The TB's get gummed up and the stepper motor struggles more and more to stabilise idle- a good clean and adaptation (channel 098 on a Launch scan tool) and you're good to go! Even works on getting a car with a 268,272,276 degree cam to idle "properly".

Our family car is a 2015 holden commodore sv6 wagon. Yesterday we took it to the mechanic because the RPM was quite low (around 500, should be 750-1000) and it stalled a few times. I did some research and it said a vacuum leak or a dirty throttle body were the two most common causes of this issue and I was right! the mechanic said it was the throttle body so he gave it a clean and the car is back to normal!
@dwalto19773 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that some manufacturers coat the throttle body bore with a specialized material and if you clean it aggressively, as this video instructs, you will remove the coating and the valve will not seal properly in the bore. This will create a higher than normal idle.
@wellnesspathforme62362 жыл бұрын
Maybe use a plastic "brillo" pad version to do the scrubbing to avoid scratching off the coating. Let it soak for a bit longer and scrub a bit longer. Recommend this be done on cooking pots and pans, too. Keeps residual metal from being ingested and keeps the pans in better shape so they last longer.

Use a plastic woven dish scrubber instead of the green scour pads. Let the chemical sit for a little longer and scrub a little longer. Recommend you do the same technique for your dishes, too -- using dish appropriate cleaning supplies, of course. Your pans will last longer and you will reduce the micro dose of metals that end up in your food.

What I do like in your channel, it is comprehensive. You use comprehensive set of tools, you narrate comprehensive directions, spray comprehensive cleaner. Before dismantling throttle body it's better to disconnect negative terminal off the battery. Touch the valve gently and do not let it shut violently! The throttle valve is actuated by the small motor which is aligned to the small plastic gears. That gears are likely get damaged when the opened throttle valve is let shut violently. Also I want to mention here some throttles feature the grid beyond the valve. The grid if you observe carefully its surface you can discern has its side next to valve edged section, whilst the other side is sloped and smooth. I don't know what this grid stands for, but I can speculate it alignes and disperses air intake to eliminate turbulence. I can say among numerous channels your narration is the most comprehensive.

There are also some vehicles that have two coolant hoses (inlet/outlet) running through the throttle body (like on a 2013 Hyundai Sonata). Cleaning procedures have you unscrew the throttle body from the intake but not disconnecting the coolant hoses and cleaning in the engine bay. Relearn procedure is: The battery must read above 10-volts and engine temperature must be above 41.5 degrees for learning to complete successfully. 1) Turn the ignition key ON for at least 10 seconds and then OFF for at least 10 seconds. This procedure allows the ECM to automatically learn the throttle valve position.

Perform a Honda throttle body relearn Reinstall the Honda throttle body using a new gasket and torque to specifications. Now that the carbon buildup is gone, you must “teach” the computer where the fully closed position is. This is called a Honda throttle body relearn or Honda throttle body reset. Shops perform a Honda throttle body reset with a scan tool, but you can perform it manually by following this procedure: 1) Turn the ignition key to the RUN position for 2-seconds. Do not start the engine. 2) Start the engine and run it at 3,000 RPM until the radiator fans come on. 3) Then let the ending idle for five minutes with no loads (lights, heated seats, rear defogger, blower motor, radio, etc OFF) 4) After five minutes, shut off the engine.

Does you manually moving the throttle up and down mess up the throttle “calibration”? Lol

Hello my friend... If loss calibration how I can restore in home alone?? Thanks

There's usually a screw that is used to adjust it, don't mess with it though unless you're into tuning.

Best film on Throttle Body cleaning + 100s very useful tips for many other car projects. Thank you very much for such a detailed film. Can you immerse the removed throttle body in the degreaser and after washing it go over with throttle body cleaner? And can you avoid that procedure with resetting the TB position? I don't have VCDS. Thank you again.

question: if one does NOT do an adaptation, might the computer self adapt/learn after a few cycles after cleaning the throttle?

Thanks a lot for this useful video. I have a 2011 Vw Polo 1.6 TDI DSG car. When I stop car engine shakes and a sound comes like "kis kis kis". One of mechanic said "problem on throttle" and other mechanic said "I checked throttle it close comletely, problem on flywheel". What do you think about this problem?

Can you clean the IAC valve on an electronic throttle body? Do they get dirty overtime like any other cable throttle body?

Dear humble mechanic I own a 2014 chevy sonic rs 1.4 turbo automatic I plan on taking off my throttle body and totally clean it my question is two parts ... Is it ok to manually open throttle valve and will that mess with the electronics and how can I do a relearn without a computer bc I don't own one... Should I just unplug the both battery cables for a hour or someone suggested touching the neg and pos battery cables to do this which is safer ... Please help thank you ....

Hi, I cleaned and opened the butterfly and calibrated the throttlebody manually, do I still have to calibrate it with a scanner?, it’s a 2015 turbo Hyundai Veloster, thank you.

I just did this to my 2005 GMC Canyon 3.5l (also the MAF with MAF cleaner) today. It was generating P0506 codes (idle lower than expected), which I could not find a direct answer to fix it. This process fixed it, now it idles around 700 vs 500 RPM.
