How to clean algae from an Intex pool and set up a DIY sand filter.

In this video I'll take you through the process of what I did to clear up the algae from my above ground intex frame pool. After shocking the pool I created a sand filter to help filter out the dead algae. Below are some of the parts you may need if you want to try to put together a sand filter yourself. You can find most of these parts at your local hardware store. Or if you are really interested in a sand filter I'm including what I will most likely be upgrading to in the future for my 12 foot pool below as well.

The first year we had a pool it turned green with algae. The next year we set the pool on a rug of plastic (fake) grass, underneath and around, and also used a shade cloth above. Since then no problems. I think the grass kept it clean from dirty feet and the shade cloth stopped the sun from helping algae growth. No chemicals just vacuumed out dust.

Using a threaded lid for the bucket should remove the issue of the lid coming off and remove the need for elevating it.

NOOOO, the poly fill is to be removable!!!!!! If you were going to use it like this, you should have put it on top of the sand. It's GOING to clog!!!

I didn't have to vacuum. I poured one gallon liquid chlorine. Half gallon of algae guard/killer. One chlorine tablet and extra blue shock. Let pump run. All algae cxne to top of pool and the filter filtered it all out. I have canister filter pump. I did have to change out filters every 2 hours. But the algae is all gone.

One thing that i see wrong is that your filter media are in the wrong order. The dirtiest water should flow into large substrate, then floss, then sand.

If the sand was at the bottom of the bucket, wouldnt it go out the discharge?

This works really well at removing algae. Backwashing the sand today and I had an algae slick down the yard. The polyfil and rock combo prevents the sand from entering the pool.

Wow that’s a great idea. I have one of those pools too and I keep the pump running 4 hours on the morning and the another 2 or three on the evening and sometimes I have to clean the filter twice a day.

Terrible filter, terrible filter cadriges = terrible water. Buy a decent filter add filter balls instead of those rubbish paper filters and that alone will take care of your problems. No need for an extra sand filter and messing around... Filter balls are reusable and very easy to work with. Thank me later

The pump is created for cartridge filter , 2/3 of the balls will not be filtering

The trick is to create waterflow in your filter, so originally the water goes from round the outside the filter trough the filter back into the pool. I made a simple pvc / plastic pipe drilled it full of 1cm holes and put that in the middle of the filter pump. Fill up the outside with filter balls and you have the exact same water flow but without the need of the rubbish paper filter cadriges. All the balls now collect dirt. It's super easy to make. I have used this setup for many years, never had issues with my water. I converted so many people through the years to this setup and none of them ever went back to filter cadriges. Same for my spa hottub, no paper cadriges only filter balls, never had issues with dirty murky water because these balls just absorb everything. This is my 7th year now i've been using aqualoon filtration and never had issues with my water. Of course they designed these things for paper cadriges because it brings more money in their pockets... You just have to be a little creative and think different. Anyways to the people that want to use paper cartridges i won't say they can't i can only give them advice and our personal experience. Greetings

He need to add Micro Fiver Towel on Sand 1st it collect all dirt and when he want to clean His Filter he can only wash that micro fiber towel and start his filter again .. otherwise he is backwash his whole sand ..

You can buy a sand filter and a robot vacuum. Intex makes sand filters that work fine.

Ours started out this way this season we are so upset it came straight out of the hose brownish green our County water dept was having issues. We can't get it clear no matter what we've tried. I want to try this.

If you have most of the materials, filtering through sand is great. Since I couldn’t leave this set up last year, this year I picked up a used sand filter and pump from Facebook marketplace and the pool has stayed much cleaner. The waterfall idea sounds cool though.

When I had a pool this size I used a similar contraption to clear the metals out of the pool water from my well water. I filled it completely and tightly with polyfill and let the filter run the water through it for about 24 hours and the water was crystal clear. Worked like a charm
