How to clean an Osprey Backpack? Hiking gear maintenance is important!!

I’ve never washed my backpacks haha I’d buy cheap off brand backpacks and I would just use them for 4-5 years and then replace them and hand down the old ones but in the last 4 years, I bought an expensive Osprey bag as well as a camera bag, the camera bag needs a washing! Haha so I will follow this. Thank you! For my Osprey, I clean it with a microfiber cloth and a little bit of water after every hike. That way dust doesn’t collect

Osprey recommends not drying a pack in direct sunlight, they don’t mention anything hiking through the desert in direct sunlight though.🤔 Thanks for the tips!

I thought that was weird, too. Like these things are made to be outdoors in all kinds of conditions, but one dry out in the sun is bad?

Because the heat on the wet fabric can cause shrinking. Just like drying a shirt in the dryer on high heat.

The osprey webpage for cleaning your backpack says under the drying portion : “Finally, hang it out to dry outdoors or in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight”. I don’t know how sunlight might affect the backpack if at all, but just letting you know that leaving the backpack in the very strong sunlight during the drying process may cause unwanted effects.

I used some laundry detergent and a similar but cheaper hand brush, I like how you used your bathtub, I did it outside on the concrete, and I hanged it outside

I have an old North Face backpack that I found at my local thrift shop for around $15 a few years ago. It has been shedding little black grains from the pad. Found this video while trying to google what the black stuff is.

My (Osprey) backpacks are now really clean, but it also further destroyed the inner layer, some sort of white foil-type of layer (coating) on the inside of the outer fabric, which is now peeling off and getting loose! Now that may also have something to do with the age of my rucksack (5 years or so), but please be careful before using this detergent.

It is always good to read cleaning instructions for each product on the tags or online. Osprey specifically recommends this detergent.

Hello ! Thanks for the video, super interesting! I did everything you did. I got an osprey talon 22 green and some part white. Well about these white parts, they are kinda pink, maybe because of the sweat, because it is under the suspenders, and they’re still like this . I can’t wash those. A random drying rack from Amazon and the hooks is something we used to hang bikes in the past. Anything to hang the bag will do :)
