How to clean and fix your Krups GVX coffee grinder

The light on my grinder would turn on but the motor wouldn't turn. I used a flat head screwdriver and some compressed air to remove a tiny invisible bean fragment right next to the lid sensor and now it works like a charm. You saved me $50. I can't thank you enough.

This machine has worked for us daily, (espresso (fine grind)) for many years and all of sudden today it sounded like the motor had gone (slow and low sound without grinding). Excellent review....I just got done taking mine apart to clean it, and it needed it. The top works by activating a tiny pin switch located in the channel on the right side of the machine when facing it, that the top fits into. I have taken a photo close up of the switch. The cannister that collects the beans also trips a micro switch which is activated by the lid of the cannister. I have taken a photo of this as well. These points, as you mentioned need to be debris free to function effectively. One other thing I would like to mention, is that the top burr is attached to the black cylindrical piece of plastic that is called the removable top burr by Krups in their manual. As it says in their manual, you have to position the fine/coarse adjustment to its most vertical position, turn the top burr clockwise until it stops and then pull upwards. I hope that I can load these pictures.

Helpful video, I managed to get my grinder working again thanks to it - in my case it was the dispenser shoot and gently proding it with the end of a desert spoon did the trick.

Nice video, I have strange problem. It was working great, now, it just grinds coffe for 3sec and turns off. Even If I press switches and hold with tools it just shuts off. Do you have idea what to look for, button seems clicking normally when turning on? Tnx

Thanks for the video. That microswitch under the lid is on the right side as you look at the machine. It's really small and hard to see but I also had coffee stuck just around the switch so the lid could push the switch down. After dislodging a few pieces of coffee the grinder now works. You will hear the micro switch when you push down on it with the lid.

A common actual fault is a microswitch inside coming loose so the top cover or receptacle isn't detected so the motor doesn't run; press the switches while powered to check. You have to pull the knobs off and tighten the switch (I'd apply Loctite threadlocker to prevent recurrence); there are detailed discussions on the Web. If you simply short out the switch the troublesome interlock is disabled; I have a 30-year-old Krups 222 with no interlock which works fine (the GVX2 isn't mine).

Disassembly of the Krups GVX2 or GVX212 is possible but it is not at all obvious how to do it. The entire insides are exposed if you can slide the entire U-shaped outer shell up and off. The black plastic shell wraps around the entire unit starting at the front left side, going around the back, and ending at the front right. That whole U-shaped piece slides up and off and it can be done without destroying any pieces. The first thing to do is to remove the coarse/fine adjustment knob. If you look at the knob with the handle in the straight down (i.e., 6 o'clock) position, there are three springy detents around the circumference of the knob. They are at 12 o'clock, 8 o'clock, and 4 o'clock. A thin screwdriver could press these and allow the knob to be pulled straight off. When the knob is removed, a small spring and plastic part will fall out so look for them. Nothing else needs to be removed before going after the u-shaped plastic shell. Turn the grinder upside down. There are four places around the shell where a detent keeps the shell from sliding up. There is a detent about 1 inch back from the front edge on each side and a second detent about 4 inches back from the front edge on each side. A thin knife blade inserted between the shell and the base at each of these locations allows the whole shell to slide up and off the base. All of the internal components are visible and accessible after the shell is removed. It turned out the wire on the microswitch sensor was broken.

Thanks to info repaired my coffee grinder; problem was main switch was damaged &so did not make contact with the micro switch. repaired button with superglue then adjusted contact by wedging circuit board forward with packing.

Just FYI: The motor is 120 volts and will run without any of the circuit board components and micro-switches (if rewiring is done) but this should really be done only for testing since many safety features would be lost that way.

Thanks! A really tiny speck of coffee prevented the lid from seating. I removed it by blowing out the slot with air and unseating the speck with the straw that guided the air.

Great video, but one more thing to add. Mine stopped working and I did all these cleaning tricks. But the problem I had was that after I reinserted the grinding burr unit, I didn't rotated it to 'lock' enough which prevented it from turning on.

We received this grinder for a gift about a year ago but kept it in the box unused until the one we already had broke. Took the grinder out yesterday to use, and NOTHING happens when you push the on button! Tried it in several different outlets, have readjusted the lid to make sure it's closed tight, and it doesn't turn on. Can these things just go bad sitting in a box on a shelf??? Have no warranty or return slip.

Before watching this video, I did try and clean the inside rim by turning it upside down, banging the device, and running a brush around it. Didn't work. But, after watching this video, I looked again in a strong light and realised that perhaps a small sliver of coffee was wedged in there, so I used a flat head screwdriver to ease it out (it actually took a quite a strong shove to get it out as it was well wedged in there! No way brush or shaking would have got rid of it alone...)

My Krups Espresso machine has worked like a dream for years as well. I use distilled water and never have to descale the mineral deposits you get from tap water.

Thanks, Doc--worked perfectly. This grinder has proven to be a temperamental piece of crap since I bought it, working intermittently, but you pinpointed the difficulties. I used an ice pick and a can of compressed air, but was also tempted to fire up the 100 PSI air compressor in the basement, but that might have been overkill. Surely the geniuses at Krups could have come up with a better design! Also, the lid that fits onto the hopper is so easy to lose, it would have been better to have it either hinged, or somehow made a part of the whole hopper. Good job!

I've watched several of your coffee grinder reviews including how to clean them. You miss the same very important step in every single video.....remove the burrs to clean thoroughly!! Did you read your user manual? ALL burr grinders have removable burrs, either by removing the bean hopper and the upper burr lifts out or the hopper unscrews off with the upper burr attached to the underside of the hopper. Just brushing out the chute is not sufficient.

To help clean out the coffee residue out of the blade area and out of the dispenser area, try putting a slice of bread and running it through the grinder. The little bit of moisture in the bread and the bread crumbs will get just about all the coffee out of the unit's working parts. The tip about the little channel where coffee bits can get stuck was very helpful, and then I run a q-tip around to pick up finer coffee bits. The bread crumbs can be used for meat loaf or other meat dishes like meatballs. I keep a supply in the fridge.

My Krups GVX grinder is putting ground coffee into the motor compartment. I can always shake out a tablespoon or two of ground coffee from up inside much of it will come out of the two small holes in the bottom. Any ideas?

I tried the cleaning the lid and the slot but my machine keeps stopping on its own. I ended up putting black electrical tape on the bottom edge of the lid and that kept the lid snug in the slot and allowed the machine to stay on until the grind completed as designed.

Hi, I have a Krups GVX2 coffee grinder. The problem with this grinder is that I don't see a difference between coarse and fine grinded coffee. The coffee is just fine grinded and to make coffee with French press it will be very cloudy and not clean coffee. Basically I buy coarse coffee from stores to use in French press. I don't know if there is a way to fix this issue or not? I tried to follow the instructions to mount the upper burr to make sure that it is mounted right but it didn't help. I hope to hear from you.

Jafar Khayati you'll need to buy a Peugeot manual coffee grinder to get a proper coarse grind for a French press. Also you won't burn the beans by using a manual grinder

My GVX2 just keeps grinding until it finishes the entire reservoir! I tried give it a thorough cleaning inside and out and tried all the combination from find to coarse, from 1 cup to 6 cup. No luck. Once I push button to start it will just keep going and going like Energizer bunny. Does anyone have same problem? Any suggestions?
