It depends on how often you cycle. If it's almost everyday best to clean the chain at least once or twice a month, if not, maybe every 6 months should suffice

either upside down on some cardboard to prevent scratching seat and handlebars, or get a workmate (sawhorse) and weigh it down, i use 35lb weights, then using the clamp and a couple hockey sticks, prop the bike up and boom, you have your own functional bike stand. sure it’s no articulating stand and it doesn’t hold the front tire off the ground, but it’s worked for 20+ bikes and still has yet to fail me. or a third hand to hold up the back tire works as well, just make sure to pay them good if you take that route

He wipes the chain off way too soon. Instead, backpedal for at least 1-2 minutes. As the rollers pass over the cogs and jockey wheels, they'll rotate slightly within the chain and that will help draw the new lube into where it needs to be inside the roller. Wipe off then repeat a few hours later on a freshly cleaned chain.

After solvent and washing water, I use a kettle of boiling water, poured over the chain while I back pedal. This gets rid of the last of the solvent and washing water, while helping the chain dry quicker. I get ride of any water by using GT85, which also ensures penetration of lube.

Having a bike stand, dummy hub, and the chain cleaner would lead me to believe you probably already know how to clean your chain. Why not show a video of how the casual rider, who doesn't have all the gadgets, would clean his/her chain? After all, majority of riders aren't going to have everything you show in this video.

I personally use brake cleaner (yep...) to spray and clean the chain and cogs. Once it's dried and wiped with a rag, I oil the chain with cheap and simple 3-in-1 oil. I've tried fancy "dry" lubes, wax based; all they do is bind up the rollers and stiffen the chain, and then shifting sucks. Cycling to me is meant to be simple, and while this a simple enough demonstration here, cycling has become filled with way too much wankery.

Been getting into some 'amateur' bike repair this summer and I can't tell you how annoying it is finding a bike that someone gobbed up with a heavy weight automotive grease. Great video. I think hitting the chain with 1. Solvent degreaser, 2. Soapy water w/Oxyclean, then 3. 70% Rubbing Alcohol, drying completely, then lubing with the correct wet/dry lube is the way to go. Emphasis on wiping off all the excess lube! Too much lube is possibly worse than not enough, due to the dirt it can collect.

Does anyone have any real-numbers on what this can do to extend a roadbike's chain mileage to (referencing something like a CC-3 gauge)? I mean, that chain in this video looked like a timing chain out of a 1964 buick - with baked on grease. From installing a chain, I use a good chain lube, my bike never sees off-road or rain (I live in the desert), and I can get a consistent 2k miles on a chain before 'stretch' overtakes me (cassettes on every 2nd chain). How does 'chain cleaning' actually benefit me, when you couldn't tell one of my old 2k mile chains from a new in-box, until you put a gauge on it?

There are e-bikes with chains that cannot been turned backwards. In that case remove the handle of the Park Tool Chain cleaner and turn the tool so that the place where the handle usually is mounted faces the frame of the bike. Now you can turn the chain forward and the tool is as useful as it is for normal bikes. I do it like that and I am very happy and my chain is easily cleaned.

Thanks for another awesome video Park Tool! I tried this for the first time today with this video on beside me for reference, and it worked like a dream! 🤩 Can I ask a quick question please off the back of this? Would it do any harm to leave the rear wheel on while cleaning? I guess that removing the wheel makes it easier to clean a full cassette etc (and maybe keep disc brake components away from splashes too?), but I was doing this on a single speed with a 17th hub and wasn't sure if it was totally necessary? My bike does have disc brakes but I used a Muc-Off covers to sheild them before I started cleaning the chain. Thanks a lot and best wishes! Gavin

how do you separate the solvent on top to reuse it.?

Park tool is a good physical design but it recycles dirty fluid. Muc off version uses clean fluid from a top feed but it feels sparingly. But I think if you combine the build quality of the park and the top feed of the muc off that would be the best design

How bout y'all stop complaining and do this outside so theres no freaking drips on your floor anymore. The cleaner looks cool btw but you can do the same with a brush, some paper towels, and soapy water. I still recommend using park tool chain lube though.

I’d say it’s better to leave the wheel on that way when lubing the chain, backpedal to get the excess lube into the cassette.

Great video! do you recommend using wax lube on road bike chains or should one be looking at other lubes?

This is probably three years too late but waxing a chain should be fine for road bikes. Although the process is much more tedious than using regular chain lube and requires removing the chain every 300km you ride

Complicated and messy option. I did that only once and I gave up because after you clean the chain you have to clean the cleaner and the mess from the floor. So if you want to clean a chain you can put it in small plastic bottle and add some diesel fuel or solvent and shake the bottle some times. After that pour the solvent out and cut that bottle to take the chain out. Use some paper towls to rinse the chain. Good luck!

I don't believe you can get your chain really clean without taking it off and swilling it about in something (I believe Sheldon Brown recommends boiling it in a solution of household detergent). But perhaps worth remembering before you take too much trouble that we lIve in a golden age in some respects, when some bike components, including chains, are amazingly cheap.

adougan99 Entirely with you there. But your chain is going to have to be discarded sooner or later - and surely is more easily recycled than most things? so you weigh up how much trouble it's really worth taking to prolong its life. I only mentioned it because some people really seem to go to excessive lengths - must spend as much time cleaning their chain as they do actually riding their bike! It is a 'consumable' item - take proper care of it, of course, but whatever you do it won't last for ever.

If you will pass a chain through a chain cleaner (of any manufacturer) until soapy water will remain almost transparent, then remove front sprockets, a cassete and cogs of the rear derailleur, clean/wash them with at least soapy water (white spirit is an option), you'll get your chain quite as it looks in this video))

So, this is the best we can come up with in the 21st century? This is the bicycle equivalent of hand-starting an airplane engine or forging one's own nails to build their house. Way too much work. Do we OWN our bike, or does the bike own US? I wish someone would improve the technology. It's overdue.

Get the metal body CM25. It's pricey but unless you do something stupid to it you'll never have to buy another one, only on rare occasion have to replace components. The plastic scrubbers work but eventually develop cracks. Put a magnetic strip or a small magnet in the bottom to pick up metallic particles - the CM 5.2 has a magnet built in.
