Excellent tear down, very helpful in boosting my confidence that I was using the right techniques to pull apart my overheating PS3. It has sentimental value, it was the first gift my wife gave to me after we married. I'm hoping to be able to keep it running for a long time.

Just wanted to say thank you for uploading this!! I was in the process of cleaning my disc laser and when I finally got to the step of reattaching the ribbon cable, I almost gave up entirely. A massive thank you. I followed your guide and a bunch of others and to great success. Took me a total of 4h50m, because I forgot a piece and couldn't understand immediately where the part was coming from. Also my console froze, but as I understood later it was due to a faulty Blu-ray disk and not my poor assembly. Anyway, it was easy to understand and was great fun to follow.

5:30 DO NOT pull on the flex cable at the bottom of the DVD drive! The retaining clip is the brown piece around the plug on the board Lift the brown piece up gently from power supply side and the cable will be free
@uFixTek
@uFixTek 2 жыл бұрын
PULL STRAIGHT UP , it will release it self, the retaining clip its not biting on the flex it won't damage the flexor! we open so many and never ever had issue with it. but if you want to fight with it and find a way to stick your finger under and not damage the flex and pull the clip out..sure do it. but there is no way in hell you can damage the flexor by pulling it straight.

I just jailbroke my slim and discovered the temps are 65 C and 73 C just during idling . It was used mainly as a blu ray player since it was new, and occasionally only for PS3 exclusives- and the thing would always make this expansion/contraction creaking noise while it was heating up, and again while it would cool after power-off. Hoping that a cleanup and repaste will correct that and help it run cooler.

I watched your video and was very thankful, did all the steps like you did. Got 2 screws now that i cant remember where they came from, but the overheating is a bit less now. Then i watched another video and saw that you can open the CPU and GPU even more. The silver thing is just a "safety cap". Beneath is more heat compound that could be old. At least that is what i saw in that video from Nsc. Might be important to change that paste too.

Thank you for the feedback and your support and regarding the "thing" its not too important and if you wish you can replace the it. i don't remove the IHS because its too risky for the viewers to do so and they can really damage the cpu or gpu, and we have done many many test and the difference are: if you replace the IHS thermal compound you will only get 3c extra temp drop! This is my first time taking apart my console and I will happy to use it again.

HI, first of all thank you for the support to the channel, and regarding your question: #1. no need to worry if the disk is inside, but its recommended to remove before servicing, and also not all ps3 have a ribbon cable underneath so you may even not have to remove the shell case for the dvd drive, i made a 4k video based on the model that doesnt have the flex cable under dvd: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZbcZ2l7fNB2eNU #2. there are only two best thermal paste that is recommended : the best: amzn.to/3pCxkxg 2nd best : amzn.to/2MpcVNW #3. you can start your ps3 right away , but let it stay in the main screen for 30min , then you can load games. if there is anything else you need help with leave a comment and i shall get back, good luck

From your new video, you did mentioned about replacing them with .3mm or .4mm thick; I haven’t been able to tell if my PS3 model does have them as I’m still waiting for my materials to open it. If anything, does more thermal conductivity mean better? For example, I found that thermal conductivity for .3mm thick is 3.2w/m-K.

Great video, I checked many and this was the best one. Great explanations, taking it slow, thank you very much! Subscribed. Just one question - at the back of the blu-ray dvd drive, I accidentally moved the tiny brown plastic thing connecting the brown flex cable to the motherboard. The brown plastic thing tilted around 45 degrees forwards (without detaching from the motherboard), then I moved it back exactly in place. Now, everything works but the blu-ray dvd drive does not. I'll inspect all the ribbon cables tomorrow to see if they're plugged in properly, but I am afraid it could be that brown thing I moved now has messed up soldering... is that possible? Thank you very much in advance.
@uFixTek
@uFixTek 2 ай бұрын
It's my pleasure my friend, i appreciate your support. 🫠Regarding your question, let me see if I understand correctly: "You bent the jack of the brown flex cable right at 5:10, that jack?" If you bent that jack to 45 degrees and then back to 90 degrees, there's a 99% chance that you've cracked or ripped the jack legs from the motherboard. You'll need to solder it back to the board, or take the motherboard to a repair shop and ask them to quickly solder the jack pins back to the board. The pins might be cracked and not visibly detached. This should take the repair shop about 5 minutes, and most shops should do it for free. Should you have any further questions or requests in the future, please don't hesitate to ask me. cheers🍻

I would like to mention that removing the old thermal paste can be done neatly with the edge of a one sided razor blade held at about a 15 degree angle to remove anything that is built up, thick and/or dried. (it saves on cleaning product and usually comes off in one big chunky piece or shaving) To clean the remaining paste, Zippo type lighter fluid squirted on a paper towel will remove it much faster and easier than alcohol. (yours looked like 50% alcohol) Lighter fluid also works well with glues left behind by price tags or stickers. It almost never leaves a stain on any surface and won't melt or dissolve plastic or remove average to quality ink stamped/printed writing or numbering. (found on most electronic face plates like stereos) Discard the used fluid soaked Kleenex properly and only use the fluid in a well ventilated area. Our family has used lighter fluid from before I was born. Tar on your shoe?, Gum?, It's worth keeping a can on hand. We even used it to get the heavy glues from bandages off our skin but Wash right after. :) The PS3 I worked on was opened because the BD player was not loading disks into the machine. Upon opening it up I found so much dust, it looked like it had insulation blown in. lol I got the BD player working after taking it apart and removing the nickel from it. (A 3 yr old's idea of a coin bank I guess) lol This PS3 is now nice and clean inside and out.

Regarding your question, i highly recommend you to repaste, the paste is over 5 years and it has lost it's proprieties. if you want your console to last longer and not duffer any over heating, clean and repaste. use a High-Density paste: amzn.to/42QAwsW Should you have any further questions or requests in the future, please don't hesitate to ask me.

Oh yeah I have a question our first try using this is just after opening a game (I opened black ops 3?? Something like that) and during mid game it just dies. My dad told me maybe the transformer is too small (what I know it's a extension were u plug in the ps3 cable to ,then you can plug it in the socket after that). I'll be willing to wait for your reply
@uFixTek
@uFixTek 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback and your support, regarding your question: NO The extensions and all that has nothing to do with powering down mid game. there are only two things that can go bad here: #1. This is 97% the issue with our clients, old thermal paste and or not a good brand thermal paste , and heatsink filled with dust. i recommend you to do a Full service and cleaning with a high quality thermal paste. amzn.to/3mcmKfM #2. the power unit inside the console is over heating, take it apart and use an air compressor (not the air can that don't do SH***T) use a gas station air compressor or i highly recommend you to get one of this for the house its really useful: amzn.to/3wdpiiq its a powerful dry air duster.

Gonna diassemble my PS3 Slim soon to replace the thermal paste, dusting, and replace the CMOS battery. Is there any place in the PS3 that's grounded where I can attach an ESD wrist strap alligator clip to?
@uFixTek
@uFixTek 3 жыл бұрын
you really dont need the ESD grounding but its ok to place it, but the BEST and secures place to use the ESD is always the ground wire in your outlet, you can purchase this cable and tape the white and black ends with electrical tape. and use the green wire to attach your ESD alligator. THIS IS THE BEST SOLUTION. Else just touch a metal table and or attach the alligator to a metal frame. amzn.to/3muNlDH info: imgur.com/a/2AGCBk1 Thank you for your support to the channel by a SUB :P

Is this not too much thermal paste? I see people using far less and then evenly spreading it with a card. Can you confirm that 'less is more' in terms of the paste doing its job correctly? Or does the slim need way more than PS3 Fat? Thanks, great video by the way.
@uFixTek
@uFixTek 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! for the feedback and your support to the channel by SUB :P regarding your question: about the thermal paste there are many factors that come into effect when applying, #1. the type (brand of paste) #2. some thermal paste are more softer than others as they are more harder. *viscosity* what im trying to say that the artic mx4 is a paste that is more runny than the artic silver 5 or other pastes. and that means when you paste the artic mx4 the pressure created by heatsink will spread the paste evenly all over the cpu/gpu. but if you use a artic silver 5 or any other brand that has more viscosity, then in that situation less is better and is better to spread the paste. the amount of the paste i put its perfect , and the test would be place the heatsink with pressure and wait 5min and lift the heatsink and you will see the results. what type/brand of thermal paste you using?

@@uFixTek Thanks for the info. I bought MX-4 Arctic as per your videos recommendation. Thanks, I will apply the same amount as you've used in this case. Shame I only have 4g though, will need to buy more for the other 2 consoles I have. Cheers!

When choosing between Arctic Silver (a pea sized amount) vs the MX-4, can I ask why you'd choose the latter? Wouldn't the silver be more cost affective? Is MX-4 better for doing the job? Thanks again for your help!
@uFixTek
@uFixTek 3 жыл бұрын
the reason you should not use the "pea size" in the middle of the cpu/gpu, is that people dont realize one thing, you dont actually need to cover all the space on the cpu or gpu place. you have to know whats under the Heatsink. under GPU there are 4 vram catch chip and the die in the middle and empty space , if you apply a pea size it may not get to the far corner well (risky), but if you do the X shape you assure that the corner BGA chips and the die in the middle are covered. Regarding the CPU that's different you will only need to apply a little "pea size" in the middle. (the reason i didn't do pea size on cpu is that my comments would be like : WTF, jesus , comeon, WHY? lol here i made a drawing of the HIC removed and marked the components. imgur.com/a/fH4NBeX

Don't you have to remove the cpu and gpu cover? Or is that just optional because i saw a ps3 slim disassembly and thet guy removed the covers and re-pasted that part and also put paste on the covers like you.

Thank you for the feedback! if you wish to support the channel you can LIKE or SUB or both :P regarding your question: absolutely not the paste under there is no need to be replace and there is a very high chance of damaging the crystal dye by doing it. and if you do replace the paste under IHS you will only drop the temp by 2-3c max. and this is not a PC you can't over clock and only by re-pasting it's more than enough, and the temps won't hit 90c so no need to removing the IHS. i been doing this for over 17years and i do remove the IHS as per clients request but never recommend it. Just use a good thermal paste and you be fine: thermal grizzly kryonaut: amzn.to/3Gwsy0a
