I use a dedicate piece of thin plastic card that is reusable and can be cleaned with soapy water. I also use a jeweler's chamois which was a hand me down from my Mother, when she use to work in a jewelry store, (John T. Hinkley Pty Ltd, Sydney and still trading) as a young lady, before I was born. For the ribbon we use the 3M brand blue painter's tape, to protect it from the polish when shining them. The wooden box with foam support around the medals that I store them in, is placed in a waxed proof paper bag, to keep the humidity, moisture and air out , to further protect the medals. A trick I learned from my Father, with 36 years in the RAAF.

Yes good information medals generally only get tarnish from moisture from fingers touching medals or air especially whilst wearing medals on parade. The blue cloth in this video is also used as jewellery cling thanks again for your feedback 👏👍👏

Top tips there mate, many thanks, I’m defo in need of a refresher! (Just ordered some Silvo and a cloth), I remember going “up town” in ‘97 and thinking, being a former Guardsman, I knew all I needed to about cleaning medals. I got a massive wake up call the first time I wore my medals with cuirasses and upon checking myself in the mirror prior to the inspection, all I could see was the gopping back of my gongs reflected in my gleaming cuirasses! Doh! Lesson learned

When i clean medal on the mount, i use a very flat knife thats not sharp, and tuck cling film under the bar and between the hanging bar, works a treat. also, If you leave a couple of cotton buds stuck into the middle of the Silvo / Brasso tin, it impregnates the cotton / t bud, and you can use these, its a lot easier.

Great tips! Thanks for confirming that Jubilee and UN medals aren't polished. My medals are court-mounted and fixed in position, so I push a piece of newspaper under the bar and hanger to mask the ribbon. A Brasso-stained ribbon isn't a good look.😉

Any thoughts about cleaning wire bullion badges? I've heard breadcrumbs work quite well. It can't be too aggressive...would be interested to know if you have any experience.

No never tried as the gold lightens with time and sun light we just replace with new badge if possible

Hi, recently had my medals mounted with new tailor, he done a great job but told me my OSM is nearly beyond repair, i had them cleaned a few years ago and it came back very scratched. The tailor said it looks like the coating has nearly gone. Is there anything I could do to try and get it back to a good shine?

Hi I would have to have a good look at it first. But usually could be improved with polishing with tarnish guard but like I say would need to look and assess it first thanks for the message 👍

Hi. Might be a bit of a stupid question but will the silvo work on miniatures. It won't strip the silver or anything will it?

I generally use it for dirt miniature medals, as miniatures are manufactured using poorer quality metals so can lose coating but still looks better than black or tarnished medals 👍👍

Wish I had medals to clean after my service... Anyway, you may know this already but court mounting of medals came into being because Queen Victoria did not like the sound of the medals clanging and clinking when she was holding court where she was probably surrounded by officers and officials with chests full of medals. nice video mate, silvo is cracking stuff, and if you do accidentally get the silvo on the medal ribbon, you can get the tiniest bit of washing up liquid on a cotton bud and rub it over the dirt on the ribbon, its works a treat keep the videos coming 🇬🇧👍.

The golden jubilee definitely be very careful and never use any cleaning products as the gold will be removed just use a clean yellow duster and give it a light gentle rub but be careful as they are a mare for the gold to rub off !!

Yes NATO medals like UN medals should not be cleaned and just wiped off with clean duster. I do see someNATO medals been cleaned with braso etc they go extremely shiny but like I say they should not be polished like that and be left joe they was presented
