How to clean cupreous metalslike bronze, brass and copper? We need vinegar, common salt and sodium bicarbonate.
Copper oxide (II) reacts with the acetic acid from the vinegar to produce copper acetate (II), that is soluble in water and so it is easy to clean. Common salt or sodium chloride (NaCl) accelerates the process.
It is not a redox reaction, but a displacement one, because the oxidation number or oxidation state of the copper doesn't change.
