Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva explains how to clean dirty tile grout using only household supplies.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/Subscrib...
Cost: $0 and up
Time: 4-5 hours
Skill Level: Beginner
Tools:
Stiff scrub brush [amzn.to/3akDSsw]
Sponge [amzn.to/2XE0yRx]
(OPTIONAL) Grout knife [amzn.to/2VwokfS]
Shopping List:
Dish soap [amzn.to/34H1HcA]
Baking soda [amzn.to/2VD6982]
White vinegar [amzn.to/3ctKy9b]
Grout sealer [amzn.to/2ylHJrE]
Steps for Cleaning Grout with Homemade Cleaner:
1. Fill a cup with warm water.
2. Add the baking soda to the cup to give the mixture grit.
3. Add a few drops of the dish soap to the cup. Mix everything together.
4. Pour the vinegar along the edges of the grout. Don’t do too much at once or the floor will be really wet and more difficult to work on.
5. Pour the mixture on top of the vinegar along the grout lines.
6. Scrub the grout lines with the stiff scrub brush.
7. After scrubbing, let the mixture sit for about five minutes. Then, scrub it again with the brush.
8. Wipe off the excess vinegar mixture with a sponge. Allow the floor to dry. It could take about 45 minutes.
9. (OPTIONAL) If that doesn’t work, try gently scraping the top layer of the grout with a grout knife. They’re meant for removing grout, so do this carefully.
10. Apply the grout sealer along all the grout lines.
11. Allow the sealer to dry for 3-4 hours. Then apply a second coat.
12. Repeat this sealing process every year, especially for light colored grout.
Resources:
Tom’s homemade solution for cleaning grout included concentrated dish soap, baking soda, and white vinegar. These can found at most grocery and department stores.
Rather than using a toothbrush, Tom recommends using a cleaning brush [amzn.to/3akDSsw] with stronger bristles. They sell specialty grout cleaning brushes at most home centers in the Tile aisle. The one Tom used in the video is manufactured by QEP (www.qep.com/).
If the stains are really deep in the grout, Tom recommends using a grout removal tool and lightly scraping it against the grout to remove the layer of grout that’s been stained. Do this cautiously. The grout removal tool Tom used [amzn.to/2VwokfS] in the video is also manufactured by QEP (www.qep.com/ ).
Once the grout is clean, Tom suggests that sealing the grout once per year will prevent it from staining again. Tom used a TileLab Grout Sealer [amzn.to/2ylHJrE], which is manufactured by Custom Building Products (www.custombuil...) and can be found at most home centers.

As a 40 year tile pro i would add to let the mixture sit on the grout a few minutes before and after scrubbing.Flood the area with water and remove it with a wetvac first. Then a wet sponge. It will be much cleaner getting the dirt completely off the grout. As far as sealing, allow the sealer to dwell on the joint a minute to be absorbed and reapply if it is absorbed ,wipe off excess over the entire tile with a dry rag .And reseal if grout darkens when wet.You won't necessarily need to reseal every year unless you clean grout often.

Yeah if you dont wipe off seal in 5 mins it will form a thin film on tile. You can always test with drop of water to see if it gets immediately absorbed. Then reapply seal.

This was an awesome video! I learned so much in under 5 mins. Like, I had no idea that the grout should be sealed about once/year. I also wouldn't have known about multiple coats, wait times, or that a simple brush applicator bottle of sealer was available at the home store. Seriously, thank you so much! Grout is an alkali, vinegar is an acid. The application of the acid dissolves some of the grout. Baking soda is a buffer and neutralizes the acid; dish detergent is a surfactant. The surfactant breaks down surface tension facilitating the removal of the water and debris released when a small amount of grout is dissolved.

I had no idea it was that easy to clean or to seal it. I used one of those grout pens to make mine white, and had no idea how to seal it, and as soon as I washed my floor with a sponge mop, all the grime went right into those grout lines.... so the grout pen didn't really do much, because the grime was just going right on top of it. I have done what Mr. Silva recommends over the years, and it has worked OK. However, I find the dirt and grime will eventually leach out, and the stains reappear. In order to do a better job, I use my Dupray Neat steamer. Imho, it does a much better job of deep cleaning. It does take a bit of time initially, but after that touch-up is easy.

OMG. My story of how I ended up with very light cream colored grout in my kitchen is the same as hers with the same results. I tried the method in this VOD and many others with no improvement at all. Finally I got out my lady bug steamer again, but this time coated the grout with Murphy’s oil soap then scrubbed with the steamer stiff bristle attachment. Finally! All the discolorations were as if they never happened. I had a place where I spilled red wine and one with coffee. All the rest was the normal grime buildup in high traffic areas and was obvious when compared to corner areas.

As a certified stone and masonry cleaner, I feel it necessary to inform the viewers that if you clean your grout with vinegar every time, your grout will become etched and eventually your grout will be reduced greatly. Acidic based cleaners actually void the warranty from grout manufacturers like Custom, Laticrete, and Mapei. What should be used to clean grout? Since grout is Alkaline, you must use and Alkaline based cleaner if you want to make your grout last. Alkaline based cleaners have a PH of over 7, and are typically between 9-11 on the ph scale. If you're unsure about the ph of a cleaning product, do a search online for their MSDS. Lastly, if you wish to clean with an acid because you are attempting to restore grout, please neutralize with an Alkaline product.

Okay, so i tried this a few weeks ago on our place while we were doing our renos, and I did it WITHOUT the soap - just vinegar and baking soda - and it turned out great. I would have done it for the rest of the floor but we were pressed for time, and I noticed some areas had almost NO grout remaining, so they stayed a bit dirty. We ended up going a different route, entirely due to lack of time, but if I even had an extra day or two to do it - for 400sq ft of tile, there's no question I would have. So to those wondering about more testimonies, it definitely works, don't necessarily require the dishsoap, but if you have harder to remove stains I could see it helping - depending on how much tile grout you're trying to clean, be sure to give yourself enough time. It's very easy and straightforward.

My white grout had turned positively dark grey over 10 years. I was sceptical and took a before photo so that I could see the difference. I needn't have bothered with the photo because the dirt just stripped right off! It did take 1-2 hrs to clean with a toothbrush, but I didn't have to go over anything twice so I don'tthink it could have gone much faster. Maybe a brush like in the video would have been faster? Bathroom grout next weekend 🙂

I stupidly opted for ceramic tile in my kitchen. They allegedly sealed the grout, but it didn't take long for kitchen grease to turn it brown. At first I tried scrubbing it but eventually decided that dark brown grout looks OK, though it took a year or so for it to become uniform in color. The flooring people told me that they don't install grouted tile in kitchens anymore because staining is inevitable. HGTV loves grouted tile because it looks great when newly installed, but I cringe when I see it over the kitchen stove. In areas with iron in the water, tiled shower stalls can become a cleaning chore. If you prefer easy maintenance over glamour, don't choose grouted tile!

Why not use a spray bottle to apply the vinegar with the nozzle set to the stream setting? It seems to make more sense than pouring from the vinegar bottle. That dish soap is apparently Dawn Ultra although its label is apparently prevented from being seen for endorsement reasons. The same is true for the grout sealer. (They have no problem revealing the Arm & Hammer baking soda.) Dawn Ultra is far superior to to other brands and dollar store dish soap doesn't compare. The Lidl food stores carry a dish soap brand named Ultra which is comparable to Dawn Ultra. I'd be inclined to add household bleach somewhere in this cleaning process, possibly spraying it on the grout with a spray bottle set to its stream setting and letting it stand for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. Don't let the bleach stand on the tile for a prolonged period because it will etch and dull the tile finish. I'd cleaned the grout around the perimeter of my bathtub and wall this way by using toilet paper and soaking the toilet paper with full-strength bleach and allowing to stand overnight. By morning when the paper was pulled away, the mildew stains were gone and the grout was snow-white like new, but the tub's porcelain finish was etched in areas where the bleach flowed down onto it. (That may be a good idea to apply as a prep if planning to paint a tub with epoxy paint.)

Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda using a tooth brush. Let it sit for half an hour then wipe with a damp cloth. Will look like new after it dries. Already did it, worked great.

The certified tile installer who put the tile down in 2 rooms told us to NEVER use vinegar on grout because it causes the grout to deteriorate. Can you address this please?

You wouldn't want to do it regularly. You had to break it down a bit in this instance before resealing

For anyone who might be installing a new tile floor or re-grouting an old floor, consider using an Epoxy grout and you won't have to deal with dirty grout lines. I would recommend having a pro install the epoxy grout because it dries quickly and you need to move fast.

I have to disagree with your statement about epoxy grout. My epoxy grout is about 4 years old and I have had to scrub it once a year and the last time I put sealer on it after cleaning, so I will see if it helps.

@@markb4656 Sorry to hear that. Epoxy grouts are supposed to be non-porous and do not need to be sealed. That's why I recommended it. I like the epoxy grout I applied to my own kitchen 3 years ago because it has maintained its original color(no fading or discoloration like some non-epoxy grouts) and cleans up very well. I should mention that it is a darker colored grout(charcoal colored) so its probably better at hiding dirt than the more common lighter colored grouts. Apparently the search for a more maintenance friendly grout will continue.

That did not get the stains up to match other grout. I recommend to, while grout is still new and white, seal it with oil base paint with tooth brushes...took a few. But they're cheap. Did 1,325 sq ft of 18" tile that way. Has stayed gorgeous. That little bath could have been done in 10 minutes.

My tile man said not to seal my grout because it does not need it. Should I seal ? I am confused, I have used the tool to clean it and have been working on it for a long time since my area is huge. Thank you.

I use a lot of different types of grouts but I feel the best if applicable is epoxy grout it's not porous you don't have to seal it and the tile will probably crack before the grout
