How To Clean LECA Clay Pebbles
I am cleaning LECA ( Light Expanded Clay Aggregate) for a created gecko habitat. There will be Ffberglass screen material will on top of the LECA then Leap habitat soil.
The LECA will be used as a false bottom, water catcher from when the plants get hydrated in the habitat. I am using reverse osmosis water that has been also deionized to make sure it is sterile. It takes two soaks 24 hour periods to make sure all dust particles are removed. The LECA will also help with humidity in the enclosure. I did wash the plastic tubes with antibacterial soap as well.
LECA makes for a great substrate for plants when using semi hydroponic methods. I have multiple house plants that are thriving. A clay pot or plastic that does not have drain holes is filled 1/3 of the way up with nutrient water. The LECA is placed into a orchid type of pot which is like a strainer. The plant will hydrate itself through the clay pebbles that are above the nutrient water.
