I appreciate how you show your mistakes (camera falling, wind blowing tray around, etc.). In the age of social media where everything appears "perfect," you showing your mistakes is a breath of fresh air, especially considering doing DIY projects is often more complicated then most content creators make seem. Great job, Mike - the deck looks great!

great work! not sure if I caught it correctly but I'd use pressure treated 2x4s on top of the hollow blocks.

I've built almost 100 decks over the last decade or so. I get asked all the time about pressure washing cedar decks and I always say no. What you called "raised grain" was actually damage caused by the pressure washer. When you look at the grain lines of cedar, you will see wider light lines and fine darker lines. The lighter wood is softer. Pressure washing removes some of this softer wood leaving behind the harder parts. You followed with sanding which will cut the harder parts and level everything back out to a point. But these ridges will catch dirt and debris much easier than before. My suggestion is a short, stiff bristled deck scrub brush on a broom handle. mix one cup household bleach to 4 gallons of water. Pre rinse with a garden hose. Use the jet spray on a garden hose sprayer to remove loose dirt and debris. Then scrub with the bleach water mix. followed by thorough rinsing from the hose. This method is much easier on the cedar.

I would've added some real big footing and tons of supports under that raised section. That thing looks perfectly designed for a hot tub

Are you not worried that you didn't use pressure treated wood when you added supports to the deck framing? Seems that wood might eventually rot
@dannyomo4 күн бұрын
Nice wood. Check your code if you need railing at that deck height (probably). They have preassembled, grab-and-go, and cedar + baluster sets at Home Depot or Lowe's.

Looks good. I prefer a little more lighter color stain, but that's just my preference.

It’s a little darker than I hoped…. Same stain I used on the front porch cedar posts and shutters but came out looking way different on the different cedars

How long did it take to clean the paint sprayer? That's the main thing that stops me from using my sprayer on small projects.
@ModernBuilds3 күн бұрын
Probably 15 minutes… it’s what’s kept me from trying a sprayed finish on furniture projects haha

There's a reason why stores have a tool rental section and carry floor/decking sanders as you could have saved yourself hours of time.

@aaronalquiza96804 күн бұрын
i'm probably not grasping the physics but.. shouldn't the spraying start from the house while your dad blocks the overspray, and then move towards the end of the deck so you don't have to block anything anymore halfway through?
@ModernBuilds3 күн бұрын
Probably so… I wanted a shield between spray and wall cause the wind was swirling a little bit and I didn’t want my papa jimmy walking in the new stain

Sodium bicarbonate (oxygenated bleach),Sodium hydroxide, or Sodium metasilicate. Are the chemicals you want to use to clean the wood. Then Oxalic acid to brighten the wood. All you used was super expensive Oxalic acid. But everything else was perfect.
@ModernBuilds3 күн бұрын
Where does one acquire oxalic acid???
@thechardestyiv3 күн бұрын
@ Amazon but the bahr wood cleaner you used is what has Oxalic acid in it. Never mind anything I said since you didn’t read my previous comment. You did nothing to actually kill the organics on the wood first you just blasted them further into the wood then sealing them in with the stain.

\\\\\\\one thing i would like to add , can u make the sides all of them Black , maybe not the small edge life in the middle deck cause of tripping hazard but all the sides black will give this a MODERN LOOK (even under the stairs) and add LED's on the overhangs of the deck =) im asking too much sorry

I mean the individual boards are cool here but I think this is a case of focusing on the trees instead of seeing the forest. The deck is horrendously ugly. Truly awful. I’m debating sending this to my architecture shaming group on Facebook. It has to be lowering the value of the house. Totally detracts from any curb appeal. The size compared to the house, the higher level that makes no sense, no rails or benches what’s the point? It’s just high enough that I am worried of someone falling off, or worse tripping between the higher and lower levels. And the stairs still look like a tripping hazard with the protrusions. There’s not even storage underneath, it’s just an empty wasted void. A much smarter thing to do aesthetically and functionally would have been to rip it all out and installed pavers. Save the wood for woodworking projects and recoup the cost of the pavers that way.
