I saw a really good tip for cleaning cups/discs in public. You can take one of the collapsible sterilizer cups with you, and fill it with warm water and take with you into the stall. Put the cup in the container and close the lid tight, shake it well to clean it off. Pour the dirty water out in the toilet and reinsert the cup/disc. The container collapses, so it's easy to keep in your pocket or purse as well.

Or you can do the exact same thing using a collapsible cup but instead of warm water, use hydrogen peroxide 3%. That will remove staining as well. Then just rinse it well or use wet wipes that are safe for your body.

DO NOT PEROXIDE SOAK YOUR DIVA CUP. I did the peroxide soak on my Diva cup and it did remove all the stains BUT it turn the silicon a little bit chalky. It has this slight white powder on it. When I googled it, the diva cup website warns not to put peroxide on the cup because it can damage the cup and recommend to replace the cup if the silicon does become chalky. I guess it's time for a new cup. I'm a little bit sad to see it go after 3 years, but I'm excited to try out a different brand.

Everyone in my house has sensitive or eczema prone skin so I don't buy scented products. When I spent the night at my cousins house I washed my disc on auto pilot and ended up using a super scented soap 🤦🏻♀️ I tried rewashing it with an unscented soap but the scent was still on the disc. Since I had no other option I reinserted it and ended up with a nasty smelling disc afterwards. The only thing that got rid of the smell was a peroxide soak. My disc is as good as new again!

The only thing I have found that works for me is a 50/50 Peroxide and distilled water soak overnight in between cycles and a 50/50 mix in a mini UV safe spray bottle to clean while it's in use in place of soap. I can't even use soaps and personally, I have also had infections return while boiling in between cycles over the years. So far so good with Peroxide diluted alone for me! My disc is odor free, stain free, infections have ceased to happen, and my disc in general has stayed much cleaner with no damage or deterioration.

I live in a multi-generational household and they're _not_ chill about menstration. To clean my cup I set the kettle to boil in the kitchen, drop my cup in a glass jar that I hide in the shower nearby, and just casually dump the boiling water in the jar. If anyone asks why I'm (carefully) carrying a boiling kettle into the bathroom, I just tell them I'm cleaning the drain. I'll typically do this after I've 'claimed' the shower so no one walks in.

So I prefer having multiple cups clean at the same time so that if im far away from the sink i can just put in a clean one at once and don't have to worry about bleeding all over the floor while washing (I've got really heavy periods). I also wash my cups with medical grade "grønnsåpe"( this is an Norwegian sope, with pine sent. It contains fat and potassium hydroxide). The medical grade one is also used for wound care in in that region. Example: after birth if you got tears, they would ask you to mix a tub of that soap and water and stick your vagina invther for 30 min. I hav chosen this sope since it is recommended for use around your vagina if you absolutely need soap down there, and because you have to import cup safe washes to Norway. You can't just get that from a store, but you can get the "grønnsåpe" at the farmacy.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!! I just bought my first menstrual disc, but the instructions on the package are very general and they make it sound like I should wash it with soap and boil it after I've emptied the blood every time, which means every 12 hours I would have to do the whole process, but the thing is that the instructions are very general! But now I feel more confident about using it and the storage because the package I bought comes with a little silicon case, but from what I heard it is better to use the fabric pouch that also came with my package. Again, thank you for all this info.

On the odor - When I got mine 11 years ago, I also always rinsed it with warm water.. turns out that's really bad for the protein in the blood which then led to an odor. So whilst I'm using it, I'm always just rinsing it with COLD water (I'm lucky to have the same toilet/sink situation like you) and when I'm done I clean it with tabs which are sold for dentures. So my cup always has a light peppermind scent to it :D. Have been doing that for 11 years and I'm still using my first cup :).

You have been doing this for more than a decade and you don't know why they recommend boiling for 20 minutes? It's basically pasteurizing. 20 min over 80 degrees Celsius is pretty good for killing staphylococcus aureus or streptococcus (I forgot the full name) which are the two bacteria that cause menstrual toxic shock syndrome. So it's a really good idea to boil a new cup for at least 20 minutes because the new cup may introduce these bacteria to users environment otherwise.

@heyhowgoesit87682 жыл бұрын
it should be stored in a breathable container/bag or even left out in the open so that moisture is dried off properly. warm moist areas are ideal conditions for bacteria to grow. to avoid bacterial growth, you wanna store silicone products in cool, dry places. also keep silicone products from making direct contact with each other as that can damage the silicone, this includes, other cups/discs, toys, and lubes that aren't water based. if each silicone product is in their own bag or container, storing them next to each other should be fine. hope this helps!

Castile soap is a bad idea, it can leave residue behind that will build up over time and can eventually ruin your cup. It's also not recommended for sex toys either for this reason.

Can you purchase rubbing alcohol? If so use that to wipe down your cup.

How do the menstrual disks not leak if both sides have blood on them? I'm really confused. I'll be getting my lumma disk tomorrow for my third day of my period today and yesterday I've been using the june cup for the very first time but I wanted to try out both and now I'm worried that disks will leak.

Peroxide is a natural color safe bleach.... just don't use it undiluted or leave it on color clothing too long... also test. But it will remove blood from clothing and sheets very easily.

I'm gonna buy a cup and the cup wipes. I normally have feminine wipes in public anyways.Thanks for this info but I'm not boiling it though. I think rinsing it off with hot water is fine or put the hot water in that yellow cup.

DivaCup does not recommend using H2O2 nor Vinegar. Is this still the case? Or is it safe to use H2O2 for stain removal?

Hi, is it safe to microwave menstrual cup (with water of course), or is it better to boil the water in the microwave and then put the cup in the boiled water afterward?

So can I just place the menstrual cup in a mug, pour boiling water in it and then leave it like that for 20 minutes? Is that good enough? (I have a lunette cup). I live with family and don’t really wanna have the cup over the stove while we’re just chilling lol.

No that will not sterilize it. You need constantly boiling water on it for a few minutes. Just my opinion, be careful you definitely want to get rid of the bacteria on it. Maybe buy a cup sanitizer machine for your room. She talks about it in the video.

Peroxide is naturally metabolised in our bodies so don't worry about reaidue

@Period Nirvana what about TSS (toxic syndrome) and cups or disks? I mean if dump and put cup/disk back in, as you said in video, when we have no opportunity to clean cup/disk properly for some reason, in such cases could it be unsafe? I just resently started to learn about reusable menstrual products and I want to make this period of the month comfortable for me as much as possible.

Hi! First of all, thank you for explaining things in such a simple way, now i know what i gotta do ahah by the way, i was wondering if i can sterilize the cup, put it inside the little bag and then take it out directly when i have my period or i have to sterilize it right before put it in?
@PeriodNirvana3 жыл бұрын
That is definitely fine! If it's more convenient to sterilize and store after your cycle ends go for it!
