Some headlights are expensive as f*ck! I just replaced the factory headlights on my 2013 328i M Sport with black LED projector headlights and they look so much better than the factory halogen ones. The set cost just under $400 with tax and shipping which I think is a great price! I only mentioned these to compare to my 2010 550i M Sport headlights. My passenger headlight had a broken daytime running light housing when I bought it so I had replace it. Because it is an adaptive headlight with Bi Xenon, HID, auto-level, cornering it ended up being about $1,250! Thankfully I'm capable enough to swap them myself because the dealership wanted $2,500!!

Thank you for the video Jake. I used this on my cah and it really does work. 20 years worth of headlight damage gone :). Note: I tried to cut corners at first by using an orbital sander with 400-grit sandpaper, as opposed to buying the 3M kit. This did remove the yellowed plastic layer, BUT I soon realized that buying the kit was the way to go. That is because it's an economical way to get the 800 and 3000 grit sandpaper required to sand the headlights until they are clear (you would probably have to buy this in bulk otherwise... I paid $20 just to be able to get 400 grit sandpaper, along with a lot of lower grades I didn't need). Hell, compare this to other kits which cost $30 and $15 for this kit is a bargain. Also, the drill attachment in the kit has a foam pad which you attach the sandpaper onto. This helps a lot, because it squishes along with the contour of the headlights. Cheers man, thank ya for spreading the word.

As a Professional Detailer, there's a Much Faster way to do this but, 3M is an AWESOME product line for auto care! Yeah, doing that, " clear coat is the proper finish for long-lasting results. " that too is going to start to chip away as you drive, peeling will eventually occur and of course in Some cases, it's going to have to be redone. Just leave them after final polishing, yeah, I agree with the waxing but, get a drill pad like the one in the 3M kit and purchase some 3M Ultrafine Machine Polish, hand apply or use the polishing pad at low rpms. 3M Perfect-It 16oz Buffing & Polishing Compound system.

I did our Hyundai Getz headlights with various grades of wet and dry paper using water, then finished with regular cutting compound. They came out just as good, but then I had to do them again two years later, because they oxidized again. After that, we fitted headlight protectors and that prevented them from oxidizing again. Well worth spending a few dollars on headlight protectors, they really protect the headlights from the UV.

I wasn't able to get the 3m sanding kit in my country but I used the normal sandpaper we know. All I used was the p800 grit ,p1000 grit and 2000grit sandpaper to sand my oxidized headlamp. As you can see upthere they are already in order so I just had to clean them accordingly to the numbers of the sandpaper . first of all I took abucket of water added in some sunlight dish washing soap and i dipped in my sand paper to keep it soft so that it shouldn't scratch my headlamp. Secondly because I did not have a 3m kit available but had adrill ofcourse, I was forced to use my hands scrapping the whole headlamp uniformly in a circular pattern. When sanding, all I made sure my headlamps were always wet so I had a spray bottle aside with water in it to always keep the headlamp wet. After I did all the sanding from 800 grit to 2000grit sand paper the headlamp was smooth and clean all the oxidation was cleared out but it was foggy and it was high time to use the shield products to get rid of the foggyness since the headlamp oxidation was already wiped-out. I then waited abit to cool my hand-off coz it's really a process using ahand mostly the sanding part. then I applied my shield polish miraplate and used a microfiber cloth to polish the headlamp in a circular pattern. The fodgy started to fade out, I buffed with aclean microberfiber towel and all I could see the headlamp getting clearer it was really working. Then second step I applied the miraplate again for the shine to pop. I did the same process of polishing in a circular pattern then the headlamp was completely clean.then I applied carnauba wax to protect it from the UVs which made it even cleaner with a glossy effect. The process was the same. Great experience I had to restore my own headlamps. It wasn't 100% clean like how a newly car would look because I sanded it but what matters was I cleared out all the oxidation and it was restored and had that glossy effect again. No scratches were visible because some people might think the use of sandpaper would spoil there headlamp, I'm here to prove you wrong but my headlamp is 95% clean and glossy. Someone looking at the headlamp wouldn't notice a thing it was been sanded but myself did coz I knew how it was before and how it looked good after. 😊

Strange you still have yellowing left over? The pad size of this 3M kit are gold pad is p500 the white pad is p800 the last pad is p3000 trizact!! Always remember when sanding just light pressure only let the pad do the work, Always keep the drill moving over the lens!! Awkward areas are best done by hand, Your drill speed is OK just takes a little longer!! A slow setting only for sanding!! Try it on the E90 first :) also, if you're comfortable applying clear coat, I'd recommend a 2x clear coat after the final stage. Skip the wax, clear coat is the proper finish for long-lasting results. Just use alcohol to wipe the lens clean, then apply some clear coat. You might even want to use an abrasive to give the clear coat something to adhere to.

Just to share, I found that merely spraying the headlights with Purple Power works very well at removing the hazy contaminants. I just go grab a different sand papers progressive to 2000 and then use a cutting compound on a rotary and then a polishing/finishing compound on a finishing pad and then use a spray clear coat with UV protection. Stays clear for 2+ years. The only thing I’d have done differently, I’d remove the headlights from the car so you can get the bottom inward corners and use a spray on clear coat and get any orange pealing off. I just don’t understand why there’re so many haters, he did a pretty good job, I’m a professional detailer. The 3M kits are pretty good but the pads tend to wear out a little quick so I recommend one kit per headlight.

After many years of working in plastic, sanding then polishing is the best way to do this. NO SPRAYS that clear coat!! They can peal, and make the lenses even more crappy over time. Not fun!! The other short cuts mentioned just do not work as well. Injected plastic like this stuff that is used, needs to be sanded. And it takes time for the process as you can tell from his work above. Why? Other materials to polish it (like metal polishes) can actually craze the plastic as they can react against the injected plastic. So can clear coat sprays! The reducer in those can hurt the plastic, melt the structure cells and make them weaker. And since you have no idea what was used for the injection process that can wind up being rather expensive. Just what I have found anyway. Hope that helps. Nice work in showing how to do things the proper way! A little work always pays off!!

It looks really good. Patience works well with getting the right results. The right side (your left) looks brighter and cleaner than the left side (driver side). I will try this. I presume you can also use this on fog lights as well if there are any present on the car. good work. thx!

That's an option too, I've never done it but I'm sure it works just as well.

Your missing the point you don't need more lubricating you need less!! Think about it, We are by sanding trying to remove surface damage from the polycarbonate lens, This is why dry sanding works better by rejuicing time and pads used!!!!

Can’t wait to see what you do with this car. I had a good time watching the videos of you killing it with the 135 too. I have a 2011 335i automatic , but it’s an n55. There’s a few videos out there for N55s but none are as good as yours. I drive mine daily so just doing 5” stepped fmic , chargepipe and high flow down pipe and MHD tune. We’ll see what happens, maybe I can smoke a few v8’s. My son and I may do an N54 build one day and your videos will be a huge help if and when that day comes.
@jake_spence5 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Thanks for watching. The 335i build has been slow lately as I focus on getting the 135i in tip-top shape, but I'll resume 335i content soon...

I'm curious about this mothers aluminum mag too. I saw it somewhere. I have it. But, I believe in sanding off film and grit and gunk. It's more time consuming but thorough. I may do it without a drill. And the old hard armstrong elbow grease method is usually the best. The mothers aliminum mag is interesting, but I'm leary of it. Must experiment with it an do research on KZbin. I'm cleaning headlights in spring. I'm using Acrylic Clearcoat and I found All Purpose Enamel Spray Paint. I'll use what I have in my shop. I refuse to spend money on a fancy God Damned expensive kit! If it's wrong or doesn't last I'll let you know. Comments? David Alberta

I restore headlamps every day in my shop. They look new and will stay that way for atleast 5 more years. This 3M method in the video is better than nothing, and looks great at first, but a high end clear coating is needed for a lasting no fuss shine.
@AlexFreeRide5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, his method will last 6 months if the car sleeps outside. I think he should apply an UV clearcoat for a mutch longer protection and better finish.
@jake_spence5 жыл бұрын
Yup, if you want lasting results, you will need to apply some UV coating or this: amzn.to/2JkqZUQ

It's not the shine its the long lasting clarity which makes the difference !!

Very good and clear explanation. I'm going to order that too and do it with my car. But I'm going to disassemble my headlights so as not to scratch the car. that's a little more work but 100% safe

Lovely job mate. Really looks brand new and yes those angel eyes would transform your lights. I installed my H8's first without getting rid of the oxidation and I'm not 100% satisfied with how it looks hazy and unclean. The next job would be to get em cleaned. Great vid !

7:18 or you just remove the headlights in the first place so you can completely avoid mistakes like that 🤷🏻♂️

To remove the headlight you must take the bumper off. :D so tapeing is much easier ;)
@Beaxy4 жыл бұрын
DataFlash2008 you‘re actin like taking off the bumper is like hacking the FBI 🤦🏻♂️
@jake_spence4 жыл бұрын
It's a lot more work to remove the bumper than it is to tape off some stuff. These headlights are hard to remove with bolts in hard-to-reach areas. But every car is different.
@hossiluc4 жыл бұрын
Actually removing the headlight is not hard and you don’t need to remove the bumper only 4 screws. However, I think it’s harder to clean that way as you will need something to hold it in place while you sand
@tonykari51244 жыл бұрын
@@Beaxy trust me, these bmw are a nightmare to work on. It takes up to 2 hrs to take out the front bumper off of a 750li. They don't make it easy. Taping it off is much easier. U just gotta b careful

I didn’t watch your entire video but keep in mind the rpm of the drill should not exceed 1500 rpm or you’ll melt the sanding disk to the headlight. Excellent product list. I only use those 3M kits. I skipped ahead. Nice work. Peace 💨💨👽
