Hi Andrea, I tried Ammonia from the dollar store as well and I noticed that the smell was not strong. Found out it is weaker, it is not full strength Ammonia. I bought name brand Ammonia and had to do it outside due to the smell, BUT it worked great!. I kept them in a bag in a plastic tub incase the bag leaked and I waited over 24 hours as well. I did use about 2 cups of Ammonia so the grate was covered upside down. It was worth the extra cost because they washed off soooo clean. I do this every fall before the holidays and then after the holidays. Since you are pregnant I would not be around full strength ammonia I wouldn't feel comfortable with that at all.

I'm a landlord and when people move out they rarely clean the stove. I use the ammonia in the bag method, but over the course of several days. In other words I scrub it then re spay and rebag, scrub re spray and rebag. Sometimes 4 times to get it all off. Many times I start with oven cleaner from the dollar store to get the top crud off. I also use the side of a spoon to knock off those final stubborn black grease spots. On surfaces that are flat I use a razor blade like you would to remove dry paint splatter.

For that burned on grease, I would use the yellow can of easy off. Spray and place grates in black plastic bags set in the sun. The heat helps the chemical work. Another thing is use a sharp razor blade scraper on a wet surface. I've also used a soft pumice stone. The thing that works the very best is a steam cleaner. Enjoy!

Hi, I hope you have had a wonderful baby! Now 3 years old !. Goodness you have your handsful. Strength: I see that others have mentioned it. Ammonia can range from 2-10%. When you mentioned that you did not mind the smell that was a clue ! As mentioned, get the strongest from the hardware store, not a dollar store. Then you will find success. Also vinegar is also sold in different strengths. Again, use stronger for tough cleaning tasks. I could not believe that you felt you would be able to use a soft sponge to clean off burnt gunk ! I know that you used the scourer side sometimes. The sponge just causes lots of bubbles and a nuisance. Just a scouring pad works much better and is easier to manipulate. Another approach would be to use some oven cleaner, not the aerosol/spray type. That would have taken it off very easily.

Possibly the reason your ammonia failed to clean is due to the fact that you did not use 100% amonia . The product you used also contained soap (label says sudsey amonia), and lemon essence.

My only issue is I have pets and I also get severe migranes from harsh cleaning products and easy off makes me head throb every time... so I try really hard to use all natural stuff as much as I can. Do you have any other suggestions that aren't as harsh? Doesn't need to be all natural just not as brutal as oven cleaner? I've tried using dawn and that got the lose stuff off but wasn't as affective as I'd hoped... I use liquid laundry soap for My oven racks which works like a charm but idk if that would ruin the grates.

This is what I have done. Murphy's Oil Soap full strength; let it sit overnight and then Pressure wash. For really stubborn stains / deposits it may take two overnight coatings of MOS. That is just wipe in on full strength. I know not everyone has a pressure washer; however, in reconditioning homes for resale this method has proven invaluable. MOS is great for kitchen grease cleaning. We use it on cabinets as well and the results are very good.

I had 4 burners with baked on grease that would not come off after 2 runs in the dishwasher, pray cleaners and a unsuccessful attempt at scrubbing. I was fixing to buy new ones when I saw yours and another video about using ammonia. I let them soak for 48 hrs in 1 gal ziplock bags with ammonia and the formerly impossible to remove crud fell of with running water and the really burned on stuff came off with some scraping and SOS pads. Thanks so much for your post!

Amonia, every time!!! I put my grates in a big ziploc with amonia overnight. The gunk fell off in big chunks!! Once I poured amonia over my gas stovetop because I'd cooked a huge meal and didn't clean it right away and you junk was jellied and baked on. Once I poured it all over her stove top I layered plastic wrap over it. I went to bed and the next day I wiped it clean with a micro cloth. It looked new with the only scrubbing was right around the actual burner part. There was probably residue burned stuff on there for months!

I purchase barbecue spray cleaner from Sam’s Club for $10 you can get three large bottles plus the sprayer! This is a very strong cleaner for cleaning barbecues, (burned grease !!! ) . So you can imagine how strong this is cleaner is!!! I lay my grades in the sink, spray them sit for a half. I respray every 1/2 hour and turning them too… The more you soak them the less scrubbing you have to do!I also I use heavy duty stainless steel scrubbing balls from the dollar store. Don’t use the sponges anything else you have to use the stainless steel balls. Some of the flat areas use straight edge razor blades with a Blade holder… (Harbor freight) One key point don’t let them get too dirty, do them at least once a month…

I have the 3 of the double grates. I like the outside, no scrubbing ammonia method! I put two grates in a jumbo 10 gal ziplock bag with the top side of grate down, and I take mine OUTSIDE!!! I have hot water for my garden hose and put enough in so grates are almost covered. Then I add about 1 cup of ammonia. Close the bag, swish it around and lay it flat on ground so grates are covered. I lay it next to a drainage ditch. Let sit for about 3 hours. Then take grates out, one at a time, and rinse well with hot water hose,,, then stand up to dry for a few minutes. Then I put 3rd one in same bag to soak.. when it’s done I hose it off and let it dry While I pour ammonia water down into ditch,,, which is in my backyard on my property so no kiddos can get in it! I did this just today and used my throw away disposable Covid mask. Much better working with ammonia than without it!

You can put those gray grates and the flat burner covers (with the same finish as the gray grates) into the oven on your racks when you run a self-cleaning cycle. The grates and burner covers come out clean except where the baked-on grease was bad. Then that comes out as ashes, and you just wipe them off with a cloth or sponge using a mild solution of dishwashing soap. Rinse under running water in the sink, and dry in the dish rack on the countertop. Easy. Too bad you can’t put the entire stovetop in the oven when running a self-cleaning!

*Update 3/7/23 I found that taking the stove grates and placing them in a container of hot water and dishwasher pods overnight will also do the trick and you don’t have to worry about the potential fumes. The next day just rinse and dispose, preferably outside because you want the grease messing up your pipes. Using 100% ammonia and covering the stove with surran wrap overnight. Also with the grids you can soak them as well in the ammonia over night(cover in surran wrap) if you have in the house or you can leave outside.

That’s the problem with ceramic coated grates, next to impossible to clean. My professional Kitchen Aid has cast iron grates which clean fairly easily, even if I get lazy and neglect them for several months. Also, they’re one per burner which makes them easier to clean and handle. The key to using the ammonia method is using as strong of a pure ammonia as you can find, not the scented sudsy stuff. It’s actually the fumes that remove the burnt-on grease and crap from the iron. I put each of mine in a two-gallon ziplock bag and pour in a good cup and a quarter of ammonia, seal them up, swish the bag around and leave in the garage for a day. Then take then out and scrub with a steel wool scrub pad. It just melts away with very little effort. In the case of your large ceramic coated grates, you have the right idea, but instead of using sudsy ammonia or vinegar, spray with blue-can Easy Off, seal up tight, and place in a warm environment overnight or in the warm sun all day long, or, use the type of ammonia that I suggested. If using ammonia it’s key to make sure the bags are as airtight as possible, as like I said, it’s actually the ammonia fumes that remove the cooked on grease, and you’ll need plenty of it. Pour in plenty.

I have these exact same types of stove grates. Ugh, they drive me crazy. As soon as I see something spill on them I know I'm going to spend no less than 20 minutes scrubbing them. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Anyway, I use Bar Keepers friend for the actual stovetop with the green side of the scrubbing sponge. Then I use a pumice stone on the gray grates. It does not scratch the finish. Ofc mine are pretty old but I have found that this is the only thing that has the power to remove those super tough burnt on stains. The pumice stone still takes elbow grease but nowhere near as much as what you had to put into this. I've also used a wire brush and Bar Keepers friend. This works too but the pumice stone works the best hands down.

I'm not sure if you've ever tried used SOS Pads/409?. Well they do good on pots & pans BUT also do a good cleaning job on your stove top for a minimal grimy stove. 409 is more of a degreaser, disinfectant, and cleaner but it does a nice job. However 409 does have a heavy cleaning smell because it's a degreaser ect. I think the plain ammonia would of done a good job but you gotta saturate the grates completely immersed in the ammonia not just lightly spray. And of course make sure to put into a large ziplock bag.

Try a copper scrubber like a Chore Boy and a razor blade paint scraper. Also use steel wool instead of the green Scotch Brite pad. The yellow sponge is worthless.

If nothing works, try DRAIN CLEANER POWDER. Put them in a tray, put some drain cleaner powder and then add hot water. within a few minutes, they will be COMPLETELY clean as never used before. (Take care of yourself while adding hot water and stay away for 10-15 minutes) Nothing works better than this way.

If you let the item you are cleaning sit for a bit in vinegar ( you can spray some on ) and then dust with backing soda, time does the work for you. Anywhere from an hour to overnight. The longer the better. Much less scrubbing effort required.

You have to really have enough ammonia to cover your grates. If you don't have enough you might try to have papertowels inside to keep the ammonia in contact to your grates seal bag and in the morning the grease should just peel away from your grates! I use stainless steel scrubbers to get stubborn burned on stuff of my stove. Does not scratch. Hope this helps! Buy scrubbie pads online or if you have a Day so they carry them . Kathy

I used Ammonia on one of my 6. I used the pumice stick on the other 5. The ammonia worked really well removing big chunks of old concrete grease. I then used a stainless brush to get the loose stuff off and then followed it with the pumice stick. Pumice stick, about 35 min for a really bad grate. Ammonia about 10 min including prep. I soaked for about 8 hours in the sun with Safeway ammonia. My oven looks great. Next time I’ll use the combo method and try to get the little spots I missed.

i like what you are doing. add a 20v black and decker cordless drill to your arsenal and insert the appropriate size scrub brush attachment and attack the remaining spots. the drill with brush attachment will really give scrub power to the cleaning and drastically reduce the time. soaking overnight in a large plastic tray would be a good test too.
