Food grade vinegar is I believe, 5% to 6% acid. Home Depot sells 30% acid vinegar that you could dilute with water. You do have to be careful getting it on your skin though. Once thoroughly cleaned have you ever considered getting a diy black oxide kit and coating them?

Good idea and I have not thought about that kit but that’s a great idea as well! Thanks for sharing!

I have the opportunity to buy some older Victor traps (double long spring and coil spring) in similar condition. Do you think those traps would actually be usable for trapping or do you think i should stick with newer traps? Thanks
@TheMidwestOutdoorsman2 жыл бұрын
Hey Gabe, if the springs still seem to be in decent condition then I would go ahead and use them! You don’t have to have new to catch critters! I caught a muskrat with one of theses traps not long after I painted them! The toothed ones are illegal to use but the smooth jaws are perfectly fine to use. Best of luck to you!

Just wondering why you clean them? Unless your going to hang them on the wall? You want them rusty if you're planning on dye them. Just wondering....
@TheMidwestOutdoorsman3 жыл бұрын
My plan was to spray paint them afterwards which is what I did. It ended up working really well to get all the other gunk off of there first and then spray paint. I have heard that it does take better if it is rusty. Thank you for watching!

That’s interesting! Trap must have caught an animal and the animal got away with the trap. That’s a neat find! Best of luck cleaning it up and thanks for watching!

Hey buddy, I enjoy your video.You have to soak them in baking soda to neutralize them or the vinegar will keep on decaying the trap. Did you realize that was trap die you took off? Great job on the video👍🏻🇺🇲

Yes, you are exactly right! Yeah, the dye was starting to turn to dust pretty much so it needed to go

Hey im new to trapping and was wondering what trap die is and if it's necessary
@TheMidwestOutdoorsman3 жыл бұрын
Trap dye is basically a protective coating for your traps. Yes I would definitely go back and dye or paint them if you plan on using them

Yeah vinegar is vinegar the white is a good cleaner, I believe the white is distilled.
@TheMidwestOutdoorsman2 жыл бұрын
I believe that is correct! Thank you for watching!

Hello my friend, may I know how much is one trap?
@TheMidwestOutdoorsman2 жыл бұрын
It really just depends on the quality of the trap and how collectible the trap is. I picked these up for around $20 a piece I believe.

Nice! Thanks! Did you use anything to keep them from rusting again? I have some old traps I will never set and would like to preserve them. Thank you
@TheMidwestOutdoorsman3 жыл бұрын
I did not use anything else to keep them from rusting again. Looking back at it I should have painted them or dipped them or something to keep them from rusting again. Thank you for watching!

Do some research, you want the rust on the traps so they will take the die before waxing. This is assuming you plan to trap.

That’s a great point! These traps needed to be stripped and then painted. I prefer paint so I went with a military green color. Caught a muskrat with one! Thanks for watching!
