Hello, I just wanted to THANK YOU so much for the Whirlwind '3 common problems' video, and particularly this motor maintenance video! You have saved me forking out £35 for an entire new hoover and it has literally never been better, not even close! Was a fun little project as well while I had time today, I'm not really particularly bright, but your video REALLY made it relatively simple to follow and rewind and take apart my Whirlwind. I purchased it 2nd hand from Ebay and the suction was initially 'OK', in later months I lent it to someone and it was used without the HEPA drum filter and over some months suction disappeared almost completely. I followed your instructions (I couldn't find any Isopropyl so skipped the copper cleaning \ sanding part) and also did not have another vacuum to clean it out, however I just turned the shell's upside down over the kitchen sink and used a soft brush to brush dust and detritus away and just did the best I could with a long flat screwdriver and my fingers for the motor. I had to use a kraft knife and wire brush to pick out some dirt from inside the metal circular parts inner rim which was a bit of work , the WORST part was that main spindle nut on the motor, I literally tried everything including pliers (my spanner wasn't as thin as yours so couldn't hold at an angle to get any leverage). I also had to wedge a screwdriver into the rotating fan bit to stop it from rotating and apply reverse pressure, finally that didn't work and I had to use a smaller set of pliers on the actual disc surface to keep it still which caused a bit of unavoidable warping in the thin metal. As a complete last resort I had to get the heat gun from my soldering station to head the sides of the nut up (gently) set on to highest heat it would produce *=(480 deg). Finally after getting furious with it and almost giving up the nut came loose, seems there is barely any travel down the spindle and it's either rock-hard on there, or off completely. Anyway, followed the rest of your instructions and rewound bits of the beginning again to put it back together properly, I had completely forgot to mark which terminal went to which from the power-button, odds are I could've blown the motor-up! Seems I was lucky and was able to test it working with the case off. I put it all back together, and lo and behold! The suction now with the bit in the hose that lets air out (lowest setting), is almost TOO POWERFUL for the foam carpet tiles I have! It's BETTER THAN WHEN I PURCHASED IT! I had no idea how powerful this little hoover was! Anyway, just wanted to share my struggles and Thank You again for your videos! I have subscribed. All the Best from a DIY idiot.

Hi, Thanks for subscribing and leaving a lovely comment. I'm so glad the video was useful and you have managed to repair your vacuum cleaner. The old spindle nuts are proper pain in the bum :)

seems noone saw the real issue here: the intake should have some sponge filters that prevent large dust from going into the motor, only very fine dust can pass. You have lots of large things stuck, like hair etc. I have vacuum opened first time in 10 years, it had only fine dust coating everything inside. You should address the real issue, preventing collected stuff from reaching the motor. Otherwise, after a few weeks motor will look the same.

if the vacuum doesn't have a sponge after the dust canister, please add one. If it has only a sponge at the back of the vacuum, it's a really bad vacuum, because small dust particles can pass through sponges. You can replace that sponge with a hepa filter, cut from a larger one for another brand. You can even move that sponge at the exit from dust canister. This way you upgrade your vacuum to higher quality of air filtration.

Hi, thanks for your excellent video! I want to ask one problem I am facing with my vacuum cleaner (model: Eureka Forbes Trendy Steel Vacuum Cleaner). One day the zip of the dust bag was open and I used the vacuum cleaner in a dusty area and I immediately smelled something wrong. So, I switched off the machine immediately. Then after some days in opened and cleaned the motor of the vacuum cleaner and cleaned all dust and debris. There was no smell of coil getting burnt. I dropped few drops of machine oil on both the bearings. After starting, I could see lots of sparks near the bushes and different smell coming from the machine. Kindly, suggest the probable problem and its solution.

Thanks for a lovely comment. Try to clean a commutator.

I suspect that motor got a shorted wire inside and some of the windings overheat, as they are energized during every cycle. This will make burning smell and sparks in the motor. It is not safe to use anymore. I had similar issue with pedestal fan, but it had 3 speeds and after similar symptoms, I disconnected one wire for speed 1 and the other two speeds work fine without smell or overheating.

a.i.r..c.o.m.p.r.e.s.s.o.r. :P Blast that shit right out of there including the electric cleaner spray. Also what a piss-poor vacuum design..allowing that junk to pass through the motor? horrrrrible. Also, when sanding, hook the motor upto a drill and let that motor spin at medium speed..comes out like new in a few seconds.
