How to clean velvet Upholstery and fabric. In this cleaning tutorial, Carl, a certified fabric specialist who runs training courses in fabric cleaning shows you how to clean velvet upholstery using this chair to teach you how to clean velvet but this method will work on any velvet fabric such as velvet jackets or shoes. Velvet is a luxurious fiber but it is notoriously difficult to keep clean and stains easily. Velvet is also water sensitive and clumps under moisture meaning that stains need to be removed using special techniques such as dry brushing to open the velvet pile - grooming is essential and Carl shows you how to dry and groom your velvet so that it retains its soft hand and luxury feel.
TO CLEAN YOUR VELVET UPHOLSTERY OR FABRIC YOU WILL NEED:
1. A stiff brush or nail brush - these are my favourite type - amzn.to/3m5mSSW
2. A soft brush
3. A blunt knife or butter knife
4. A duck billed scissors
5. A spray bottle
6. Rubbing Alcohol
7. Dish soap or mild detergent
8. A hair dryer
9. Cotton towels - CLEAN ONES!
Following the instructions in the video will allow you to clean your velvet upholstery and fabrics without causing damage or clumping. The key is to gently groom the velvet and not to overwork the pile as this will cause damage; this is especially important when cleaning velvet shoes or cleaning velvet jackets.
If you want to clean velvet or velour car seats you may need to adjust your method slightly: Velour car seats will hold quite a lot of contact grease soiling so to clean them properly you may need to use rubbing alcohol to help break down the soil before using moisture - but test an area to be sure. A lot of auto interiors have velour door panels, arm rests and seats and they are quite east to clean - the method to clean car velour seats is exactly the same as normal velvet cleaning, though car seats are always synthetic and hard wearing so will clean up really well using the method in the video.
The tutorial will also teach you how to clean velvet headboards, how to clean velvet sofa chairs, and how to clean a velvet bed boards among many other types of velvet such as velvet shoes, velvet jackets, and velvet clothes.

You are a total gem! I cannot tell you how happy you've made me. I bought brand new velvet sofas for a newly renovated house I moved into a few weeks ago. But I also offered to look after a dog for relatives who were in a last minute bind finding dog care a few days before their holiday. The adorable, but naughty, dog climbed the sofas and slobbered on them. I asked a really highly rated professional cleaning company to take a look and they declined the job because of the velvet. My next stop was you and after 3 solid hours of carefully following your step-by-step guide, they're back to new!! I genuinely can't thank you enough.

I started immediately, I did 2 settees and a chair and they’ve come up fantastic. They were so grubby, dull and the velvet had gone flat that I was on for buying new furniture. Your advise has brought it all back to life, the colour has come back and the velvet has lifted. I was really surprised how little washing up liquid you need to get a great result easily , also it dried really quickly.I only used washing up liquid and water. As you say, too much detergent is too much froth and so too much stays in the velvet weighing it down and you can’t get it out.... that was the problem I had before seeing your video , I was using too much soap, too much water and too much rubbing and knocking the life out of the velvet. THANK YOU!!!

Modal is viscose, and cotton is well, cotton; both are cellulose fibers that dont like being wet! I'd test both methods in a hidden area but I suspect the dry cleaning method is the safest bet - the trick as always is the dry soil removal!

It’s most likely mineralised - grab a stiff brush and mix 50:50 white vinegar and water; gently mist - DO NOT SOAK - a small amount and groom - allow it to dry (or dry with a hair dryer on cool) and see if that works. Use the back side of a butter knife if it’s very stiff - try not to overwork the pile!

Thx for the video! Can you confirm if this method will work on cotton/poly velvet? We just bought 2 Fitz swivel chairs in rust from the CB2 Outlet that were discounted because they have a ton of indentations/pressure marks from the wrapping they used around them in shipping as well as a mystery spill mark. If it helps, the website also says "Spot-clean with water-free cleaning solvent; do not use water". I appreciate any clarification!

Mark Hindle you only need an extraction machine if it’s really bad, and if you are using one, drift spray to control moisture, groom and force dry to set the pile. But I don’t advocate extracting velvet if you’re not fully trained in upholstery cleaning. The tutorial I’ve done here is designed to not ruin the material.

Oh thats the worst when it's brand new, it takes the good out of it! Is there any labelling to tell you what fiber the velvet is made from? As the sofa is brand new I'd opt for a dry cleaning technique - use cotton buds with the solvent on them to activate the oil then roll it out with a towel like in the method in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYmwm31_m9OgY7M

Do it in the direction of the pile only; as in the way it glides without resistance across the pile. Towel in the same direction, then groom in the same direction - when dry it can be brushed. Velvet is about grooming more than anything

White vinegar treats a different soil spectrum than rubbing alcohol which is a solvent - acids can also reveal dye issues especially in cottons and indicator dyes, so stick with the rubbing alcohol if possible!

I have a royal blue velvet soft and when someone blew a candle out, the wax got onto the velvet seat. Is it safe to use an iron and paper towel on the seat to get the wax to melt onto the paper towel? I don't want to damage the velvet seat. The seat cushions can't be removed or turned over.
@CleaningHowTo

Be careful doing this as if there are any dyes in the wax they can migrate into the fibers when the wax melts - scrape up as much as you can with a blunt knife and test a small area with the iron and paper towel. It may be safer to try removing the wax with rubbing alcohol.
