Ames, No offense but a brush does nothing to get the fly ash IN the combustor. I have never had a piece of paper in my stove, yet my combustor regularly is full of fly ash. Difficult to clean, needs to be cleaned too often, and causes poor draft. Do you have a more realistic way to clean the combustor?

The EPA has done the same thing with wood stoves that they have done with diesel engines-ruin them.

I like using fatwoods to start fires because they don't create any more fly ash than firewood does as far as I know.

I have a Jotul F500 "V1" and would like to know how to clean. Also, would like to know what to do if the stove starts running hot and the air control is shut down as much as possible and/or if the F500 is too big for 1700 square feet home.

Ames, don't you need to clean both sides of the combustor in the offseason? If so, you would need to remove the lid.

With EPA regulations it was bound to happen. That or close shop. Glad I bought mine a few years ago.

There is literally no way to clean behind the combustor wiithout taking the top off which is virtually impossible because of the hardware they use to attach the top to the box.

I wouldn't say that. You can take off the lid after loosening the hardware on the ceiling of the firebox. I wouldn't do it during the burning season unless I absolutely had to and only with a cold stove. I also wouldn't take the lid off more than once a year if I didn't need to. I wouldn't think you should have to clean the combustor on the output side, anyway, so I wouldn't take the lid off at all unless it was necessary to remove the combustor.
