What a fantastic video! I’ve been an enthusiast and have had Macs for about 20 years now. I’ve also tried to stay on top of maintaining my Macs a good deal. No book, article, tutorial, video, etc has spoken to me in the way that this relatively simple, short, detailed, and oh so helpful resource ever has. Oh, and it’s completely free! I stumbled onto your channel when searching for information about backing up my Mac using CCC and was impressed with level of detail, yet ease of understanding everything being presented. I will be re-watching this video, how to clean your Mac, and going over all of the information presented to optimize my Mac. I’ve been wanting to reduce the amount of storage being used on my internal drive for a very long time, but always seem to fall far short of that goal. Hopefully I can decrease the amount of onboard storage to the point that my next Mac will not need a customized (larger) internal drive. Consider me a very thankful viewer who will be looking forward, as well as backwards, to much more content on your channel for the foreseeable future. Thanks David, for keeping the talk fairly simple and relatively non geeky.

Thank you, David, got 22Gb back - mainly iPhoto library I reckon. Another thing - I got my old 2013 iMac to run like a 2020 model simply by connecting via the USB port a Samsung T5 SSD, cloning it from the old spinning disc, and selecting it as the startup drive. No more spinning beach ball of death. Worked like magic!

Went from having only 16 G (just double my RAM) to over 226 G free. Thanks SO much! Actually, I had already employed many of your suggestions. I’m a long-time user of Power Photos. Using the first software you recommended was helpful for easily identifying outdated and incompatible software but didn’t gain me a lot of space. The big space-saving recommendation for me was to delete the old IOS backup file for my phone. That got me over 20G. Then, I downloaded Daisy Disk. Wow, I love that program! The visual representation is BEAUTIFUL and the software is so easy to use. I now understand more about the file structure of my 2012 MacBook Air and where things have gone to over time than I have in the whole time I have owned it. So, one thing it helped we realize was that a 216g photos file that I thought I had uploaded to ICloud was actually still on my hard drive. i moved it to an external drive and that gave me back the almost half the total space on my hard drive. That file was part of the huge unexplained “Other” category that my Apple System Storage app showed me but it wasn’t until I used Daisy Disk that I was able to tell exactly what was taking up that big block. Thanks so much!!

I have been scanning thousands of family slides and negatives and I think I got a little carried away with multiple backups. I have a Mac and a PC, but I use iCloud for storage. Daisy Disk was just what I needed! Thanks a ton. I save almost 50GB of storage thanks to that. Deleted most of this from the "other folder". And of course also app cleaner. Adobe CC is a really pesky little rat when it comes to uninstalling. Drove me nuts coz it kept popping up all the time even after using their uninstaller. App cleaner was like a smiting hand for it lol. Thanks again!

Great information, David! As an Apple community developer for over 10 years, former Google Director, and now an independent consultant, in online marketing and website development I truly find your videos to be highly informative, educational, relatable and even entertaining. Keep up the great work! One not I have is that 2 of the links in this video (Daisy Disk and Malwarebytes for Mac) seem to have a security restriction when attempting to access the hyperlink through Google Chrome. Also, thank you for HIGHLY recommending the paid version of Malwarebytes and the analogy you associated with the recommendation. - Bruno

Thank you so much, Bruno. I’m very humbled by your comments. To answer your question I think the security alert you are referring to may be because both Apps require full disk access in order to run properly (totally normal).

So I started off at 109.82 GB left out of 1 TB on my 2015 - 27" iMac. Honestly a lot of the things you show in your video didn't help me, some did. But what you did with your video however was to make me dig to see what was taking up all my space. I edit a lot of video on FCPX and what I found out is that FCPX can take a 200 MB video and throughout the editing process that little 200MB can ballon up to 10GB! It's because of how FCPX renders and all kinds of other stuff that I'm sure you would understand better than I do. Anyway, after changing some settings and deleting some old render and proxy files from FCPX and transferring some other files I've had on my desktop over to an external dive, my new available space is 602.56 GB. I got back a ton of space. Thanks. The next thing I need to do I think, is to get my 8GB of RAM up to 32GB since I can just add it though the little door in the back. Do you think that would really make any difference?

@TechTalkAmerica4 жыл бұрын
There are ASPECTS of CleanMyMac that I really like. The problem is (1) it isn't for everyone (2) it totally FAILS at finding Malware and (3) It's hard to recommend an app when I have to explain what parts of it are less than adequate and which parts have great value (the Shredder is a great feature). They need to improve their game and deliver what they promise. Malware is a huge issue right now and I dont want people to think they're protected only to discover they're not.

Went from 777gb of free space to 816gb. Thank you. The only difference between the free and paid version of Malwarebytes for Mac, is that it will include finding malware 24/7. The three other features is for Windows only. Stops Exploit Attacks*. Blocks Ransomware Attacks* Shields Against Malicious Websites* *Windows Only. Is it really worth the extra money for that one feature? Also deceptive advertising. Says save 25%, but you only save 12%. I did download App Cleaner and that works great.

Thanks so much for this. I started with 349.5 GB available space on my 1TB HD. On my iMac (on which I also run Windows 10 under Parallels). I did everything you mentioned and I known I was deleting lots of files including 2 copies of old windows8.1.pvm files each of 32GB. Also many other files of above 0,5GB and many higher than that. So I’m really Surprised that after all that I have LESS free space with only 339.4GB I am wondering if this is because the large amounts of files that I have in iCloud have decided that they can download more of themselves onto the hard disc given that the space has been freed up.
