In this introductory video I will demonstrate the method that I use to wash/detail my 2017 Triumph Bonneville T100 Black and how to clean the chain.
In the videos to come I will be showing you guys the $2k worth of upgrades that I have purchased & will be installing on the bike myself. Therefore, demonstrating how you can do the same at home...all in an effort to build a badass custom bike and save a ton of labor-related costs in the process.

Do NOT wash your bike like this. Do NOT oil your chain that way. Oil all over the tire? You will crash and die. Use cardboard as a backer and spray about 10% as much as shown directly on the chain o rings. Only the o rings need oil on modern chains. Better yet. Use the chain wax instead. Then wipe off as much as possible. Do not get it on the tire! Also oil the chain while it is warm. Don't take maintenance advice from a guy with a rusty chain. Sorry, guy. Your video has great production quality, but the content is seriously flawed.

Just bought my new 2017 T100 on 10/4. So I can follow you with your upgrades and customs. I have only done one custom, a set of Halcyon bar end mirrors. I am excited to see what customs you do to your bike. I am also a fan of Stuart Fillingham. He makes some informative videos.

Hey Gary, thanks for the comment & follow! Glad you enjoyed the video, and happy to hear we share the same love for Triumph! Congrats on the new purchase! Bar-ends are a great first upgrade, those stock mirrors are quite heavy and wasp-y. Keep an eye out for the second video soon!

You spray way too much lubricant on your chain... On the wrong side of the chain. And when you clean the bike, think about one very dirty place - the front sprocket.

Also, when you spray it on (on the correct side ;-)) put a piece of cardboard behind it you so you don't spray lubricant anywhere else where you don't want it such as your rims and tires (!).

Lemmy at Revzilla gives a very good video on clean and lubing chains. I use Kero to clean like he does and Chain Wax from Belray. Most modern bikes use an O Ring or sealed chain so take note what he says about difference in cleaning and why. This is always a subjective subject so find what suits you and stick with it, your mechanic will tell you if its working or not, if your chain craps out...LOL

Conner, I rode for more than 50 years. I don't know how many bikes I've had. My last, was a 2011 Harley Dyna "StreetBob." I bought it new @ "Laidlaw's." I'm 66. I rode for more than 50 years. I survived 6 Motorcycle crashes. I've broken a few bones. Look for "Red Renna" & "Captain Rambunctious," on KZbin.

that rust and the houses in the back make it look like you're living near an ocean, I recommend you pick up some acf 50 and put it on your components that are starting to rust. just a heads up though, don't put it on your break calipers or exhaust. while it wont hurt the exhaust, it'll smoke a lot and does nothing for it.

far too much corrosion on that bike for me, seems you should do that more frequently. or cover your bike, try ACF-50 for corrosion prevention especially if your leaving it outside in the elements.

@connorkeith1881 7 жыл бұрын
I agree. Unfortunately, living close to the ocean has yielded some major rusting issues. Fortunately, I've gotten approval from Triumph under the first-year warranty to have the spokes replaced...now just need to get rid of the corrosion on the shocks & levers. I keep it covered all the time, but thanks for the product recommendation. Is that what you use? If so, how do you apply & how often?

I live in the Philippines very close to the sea, rains a lot during several months of the year, and always 80% humidity. I have zero corrosion on my bike, and keep it outside under a cover. but I'm a little OCD about it. Yes I use it and recommend it. There are many You tube videos on its application, excellent product. I do the whole bike every 3 months, and touch up the tough exposed areas as needed. Spray application and wipe off. facebook.com/Deemon-Performance-790840804284937/

Probably due to the salty fog in the western parts of SF. The disc rotors on my mountain bikes would develop some rust spots even though I kept them in the garage when I lived by the beach.

Thanks for the video. Two questions: 1. At 7:10 you have a caption that says “wipe excess [ chain cleaner and lube] off bike.” For me, that’s the biggest part of the cleaning process. I was hoping for some tips on that. 2. Since the oil drain plug extends below the oil pan that you’ve lifted the bike with, doesn’t lifting like this deform the drain hole?
@MrSjeupie
@MrSjeupie 3 жыл бұрын
My biggest tip would be: don’t spray the cleaner and lube like this. Put a piece of cardboard behind the chain instead and spray from a closer distance on the inside of the chain (halfway in between the two sprockets) One section at the time. Then repeat on the top of the chain. Brush. Rinse. Then repeat with lube at the end after cleaning the bike and drying the chain. And way less lube than in this video. Clean your bike after you’ve cleaned your chain. When not relubing your chain, don’t spray the muc-off soap (or similar) on your chain cause it is a degreaser.... also don’t be so enthusiastic on the electrical parts (behind the cilinder). I use Fuchs Silkolene pro prep to protect the rims and spokes. It dissolves/cleans chain lube stains great and gives a nice shine as well. Make sure to spray that stuff on a cloth and then use that on your rim instead of spraying directly on your bike, in order to avoid overspray on your tires or brakes. Because that could be dangerous. In fact, I always clean the brakes at the very end with brake cleaner. You can never be too sure. Also: if your chain looks this rusted, replace it. You can imagine too what happens if that breaks at 60mph...

Brave lad putting yourself on here, a lot always look for reasons to bag you, everyone thinks they are an expert so dont let them get to you, I'm sure you won't....But in saying that they have got some good points but didnt need to be so condescending in the way they said it. I was wondering though is that a second hand bike and is it stored outside, just looking at the amount of rust on spokes shocks etc, they need a good rub down to get surface rust off and treat with some protectant. I am lucky to have a big garage but even in Winter I use a lot of Silicone spray over metal parts to keep moisture at bay, and if bike is stored outside or you live in a salty area then more so... I had Triumps, but my main bike is a Road King and a 2019 Royal Enfield 650 Interceptor
@connorkeith1881
@connorkeith1881 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, Colin! I agree with you, and it’s much appreciated. It was my first bike, and as I didn’t have a garage at the time was stored outside (covered). Unfortunately the rusting became a major issue as I lived just a mile from the ocean in San Francisco. It was brand new (2017) and quickly rusted over. I did have the spoke and wheels replaced under a manufacturer warranty. Your bikes are kick ass!
@MrHasie
@MrHasie 6 жыл бұрын
ehh, some disagreements here: hose pressure too strong for seals if sprayed directly, use a shower attachment; top down, if the mitt or rag touches anything besides a painted part then don't revisit a painted part with that same mitt/rag and lastly a recommendation to lube after cleaning and if cleaning/lunging do so with the chain the motor off... too many fingers have been lost, its not obvious. As for the products, how do they work long term; I've been considering a ceramic coating.

Can never find out how the T100 /T120 Bonneville owners clean the radiator for the water cooling system that sits directly behind the front tire splash zone. How to you get all the collected gunk and grime from the road kicked up by the front tire? This is not just a bling problem. This is a performance problem if caked mud, gunk and grime lower the efficiency of this heat exchanger.

You might want to consider putting a plastic under the chain when flooding it with all these chemicals, otherwise it just ends up in the environment and the sewers. Good video quality, but you might want to look at other methods that use less product and avoids having half of it end up on the exhausts and/or tires ;)

Thanks for your comment! Its tough living one mile from the ocean in foggy san francisco with only sidewalk parking...seriosly rusts every inch of a bike very quickly. Probably one of the worst places to not have garage parking. Anyways, there are several ways you can clean your chain, and i found this one to work best for me. I did it this way for two years and 10k miles, never had an issue once.

There is no such thing as the right way especially when you are hosing down your bike there is always a possibility of getting water in places it shouldn't be. Another way is to use Diesel fuel or Coleman's lamp oil as a solvent. The diesel is a couple of bucks a gallon, put it in a spray bottle. It also protects the bike with a film of oil. No garden hose just rags and a few tooth brushes. If you are really snazzy then get a tiny air compressor and use a solvent sprayer and as you spray put a metal pan underneath you can use the same diesel for years.

I wouldn't clean my bike or maintain the chain in this way. The video is simply an add for Muc-off. Don't get me wrong most Muc-off products are good. This guys chain is rusty and I think I see a kink in it where the rollers aren't completely free. And who needs gimmicky wash mits? Use your favourite sponge or rag and stop polluting the planet by buying "stuff" which comes in endless packaging.. The chain should be oiled directly and precisiely without spraying lubricant where it isn't needed or may be dangerous.
