Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. Try the Ginja 5 Steps to diagnosing a lawn you'll be glad you did. Don't forget to checkout my playlist.
Today we discuss how to cleanup leaves in the yard. It's important to understand that leaves carry trace minerals that are beneficial for trees, shrubs, gardens, and grass. You basically have all this free fertilizer lying around. It's best to mulch them and put them back to where they belong.
Today we go over two leaf shredding / leaf mulching machines. The worx leaf mulcher and the sunjoe electric leaf shredder. Watch and see which of the two machines the ginja prefers to use most.

I have the Worx and recommend using the Oregon 22-895 Magnum Gator line Square .095. It is a square line with a wire core. I find that the square shape helps give me a finer multch and the wire core helps with longevity. I have a lot of twigs and the OEM line would get chewed up very quickly. After cutting a length from the spool, the end will be deformed. It will be difficult to thread. Use pliers to round the end.

Probably the best comparison video of any type product I've seen. Thank You. I'm not sure why I watched it, I felt my lawn mower was the way to go and I like the grass clippings mixed in. But for the bagged leaves I get from neighbors, one of these is a much cleaner way to go. Will look into the Worx for next season.

Wow! That was a great video! Very informative and to the point. Great comparisons on both units. I myself own the Worx Tri-Vac. I love it! I do my whole yard with it and it mulches down pretty good where I only use one brown leaf bag vs. 3 or 4 just picking the leave up by hand after raking. Time consuming and tedious but what do I care, I'm retired and have nothing else to do. If I don't get it done by the first snow fall, I have no problem doing it in the spring. Then I know I won't have any leaves coming down from the trees at that time. But really a great video!

Even though you did not like the grass in with the leaves from the mower, that stuff is compost gold. The mix of green and brown will make a wonderful compost for the garden. If you pile it up and make sure its has moisture, not soaking but wet, then leave it for a week, you will find it gets hot inside the pile. Thats the bacterial and such breaking down the organic matter into black gold. Yes the mower doesnt shred as well but the added green makes better mulch. And since you have the mulcher thing anyways you can still shred it down even smaller.

Pest and Lawn Ginja The green grass/nitrogen combined with the brown dead leaves/carbon compliment each other. A pile of grass clippings will smell as it decomposes. A load of mulched brown leaves, worked into the soil will draw nitrogen to rot. Combined, there will be no smell and become a more balance valuable soil conditioner.

The diameter and stiffness of the trimming line should probably be matched to the rpm of the motors and the rate of feed to optimize the best fit for each machine. Given a little time to experiment with different line gauges, you would be able to optimize each mulcher to their best. Also, don't forget the feed rate ... because the Worx was allowing you to feed faster, the material wasn't in the chamber near as long depriving it of the opportunity for 2nd, 3rd and 4th cut time ... that obviously affects the final mulch density. Really great video that was a lot of fun to watch ... that was a pretty good support team you had as well. Thanks for sharing your experience, it was both informative and interesting. Cheers ...

I had a Snapper mulching lawn mower with the Nija blades. I raked my leaves in a pile and kept running them over until they became a powder. This didn't take long as leaves were dry. Leaves like maple, are easy to mulch and return back to the soil. Oak leaves do not break down as quickly and take more to break down. They are also hard on the lawn. I am not big onto those machines you showed. The Lawn mower method can take on small branches and even pine needles and pine cones. You can forget using those machines on pine needles and pine cones. Forget sticks. I ran my Snapper mower for 30 years before it finally gave out. I only had to change the Nija blades once. I still miss my old Snapper mower.

WOW. Thanks for the great review. I've been sitting on the fence about buying one of these for years. My concern is wet leaves would probably just overpower the string. This is the first review that actually shows the inside of the mulcher. Looks like steel wire or even a blade could be fitted for better results with wet leaves that are clumping together. The Sun Joe looks like it has a metal hub, much better than the plastic hub in the Worx if you are using metal wire. I like the stand and the hopper on the worx better though.
@PestandLawnGinja
@PestandLawnGinja 4 жыл бұрын
wet leaves tend to stick on the outter edges of the hopper. I don't recommend using it that way. I still need to give the steel wire a shot. I know the plastic stays in place nicely.

Ginja - I recently found your channel and it's helped me start our my lawn care journey, so thank you. I actually own that Worx mulcher and had good results when I used it last Spring to clean up a mess left by the old homeowner. But I've also read that mulching leaves with a mower right back into your lawn provides some cheap fertilizer as well. But does the same apply when the consistency is around 50% hardwood leaves and 50% pine needles? I feel like putting those back into the grass may make the soil too acidic. What are your thoughts?
@PestandLawnGinja
@PestandLawnGinja 4 жыл бұрын
Pine needles are very acidic. It will all depend on your native ph. If your ph is high you have nothing to worry about. If it's low you'll want to bag or apply a heavy lime treatment after.
@bobjackson4785
@bobjackson4785 4 жыл бұрын
Pine needles do not acidify the soil. There are some videos explaining this on youtube. It is an old wives tale that has been perpetuated.

I've read that green needles have a very low pH, whereas brown needles are more neutral.
@PestandLawnGinja

You know..... I looked into this pretty heavily and I see your point. My issue is I've seen and taken soil samples by pine trees and arborvitae bushes and the ph was dramatically different up to 3 ft out from the trunks. but that doesn't mean causation was the needles or leaves so I agree with you.

Excellent video. I have the Sun Joe. I found what works best is a plastic garbage can under it. Also those huge paper lawn bags do fit under it. You're right that it's slow at grinding the leaves and I push them down not with my hands but with a piece of firewood. Your last results with the Sun Joe are what I get--lots of very finely ground mulch.

Great Video! Appreciate the comparison. DISCLAIMER - I own the Sun Joe. I find if I use the brown paper lawn and garden bags they fit right under the Sun Joe no problem. That works for me since they are cheap and I store a batch to keep on hand for my compost tumbler. My Sun Joe grinds leaves to about 1/4" pieces. Perfect for what I need. You are right on with the hopper. It is slow to feed. You need to not put so much in it at a time. Now for some SAFETY TIPS... NEVER use your hand to feed the contents into the shredder. I use a stick and stir the leaves around the hopper and they feed through quickly and easily. I use a mask. These things kick up a ton of dust and if you have allergies... a mask is a must. I also use ear protection. They are LOUD! To do as much as you had - you'll be at this for a while and ear protection will give you some relief. Thanks for this. The video will definitely be a help to folks looking for a good shredder.

I bought the Worx not too long after I saw this video and posted my earlier comment. I bought it to chop up material for my hot compost pile. It is perfect for dry leaves, what it's made for. I usually pick up my leaves with the lawn mower, then dump the bag into the mulcher, but it does a good job with whole, dry leaves too. The trimmer strings last a long time, unless sticks and other junk are fed into it. Now I also send grass clippings thru. It's not made for this, but it mostly does what I need it to do. Dry clippings mixed with dry leaves is great. It starts to struggle with heavier grass. The wetter the grass, or even leaves start to stick to the sides and clog up the mulcher. It can be annoying and slow, but eventually gets the job done. This is not a complaint, how can you fault it for struggling to do something it's not made to do? I also need to replace the strings more frequently. Overall, I think it's great for chopping materials for my compost. Use a good, heavy duty, large bag under it, even if you don't intend to fill it. You waste more time struggling with smaller, thinner bags and paper bags.
