I have been wanting to do a video on how to clear, filter and refine wine and put these filtering agents to the test. Wine making is so much fun and is easy once you know the basics of winemaking. We are going to test Bentonite, Bananas and Liquor Quik to see which Wine clearing agents works the fastest and which wine clearing agent works the best. Wine making is a great hobby and on this channel we show you how to make wine at home which will be the best wine you will ever taste. AND we make wine from Fruit too.

I had JUST learned about the prepared packet silica dioxide aka Kieselsol, a negatively-charged product with the positive-charged Chitosan. The packet that is sold seems pretty steep in price. That said, from what I gather the bentonite is also a negative-charged product! I've purchased a bottle of Chitosan (which is not soluble in water but goes fluid with diluted 5% acetic acid). Feel more than welcome to experiment with Bentonite / Chitosn as I will as well. That said, I'm thrilled that I found your clarity comparison video. PS: I bought a pure bentonite powder (food/skin grade, which is marketed for facial masks lol, cost $10 for 2lb on Amazon) which seems to slurry better than the rougher wine products. Boil a quart of filtered water and use a handheld milk frother adding 5Tbsp Bentonite. I saved a glass RW Knudsen juice bottle, adding the milkshake-thick product inside while hot and capping - by the time it cools the top vacuums and I hopefully can use what I need while saving the rest to use accordingly since I ferment very small batches.

I’m a huge fan of chetosan and kiesosol. Just make sure when you rack the wine, you stay an inch above it. I have noticed that the siphon picks it up easy so use extra caution! Great video!

@@HowToDoneRight woke up this morning and it looks exactly like it did yesterday. Still cloudy. I even added some pectin enzyme and cold crashed it. My thoughts. 1. I messed up by adding both packets of the super Kleer and it didn't work. 2. I put my packets of super Kleer in the fridge and it says not to store below 40 degrees on the packet. 3. Even after degassing there is still a lot of CO2 in the carboy. 4. I can still see bubbling in the carboy but my Gravity reading is below 1.000 has been for over a week. I am going to try to degas more today. But I am not sure what to do at this point.

Yeah the refrigeration may have destroyed it. Adding both at same time not in instructions. You can try again but follow the instructions or my video. Or use bentonite and let it sit for 30 to 45 days.

one thing to keep in mind is that chitosan is made of the shells of crustaceans , so if you're allergic you might wanna void it.

In the UK we have a brand called Youngs Wine and Beer Finings, which is a two-part: kieselsol then gelatine. It works well. I have a few questions about the process in general: 1) Your instructions say to stir vigorously. I know it needs mixing in, but how do you avoid disturbing the lees too much? Ideally it's not good to oxygenate your mead / wine after primary (as least that's what I understand) 2) I added recommended dosage to a 5 gallon carboy of hydromel. It hasn't cleared as well as I hoped. Then I added a second dose (the instructions on the box suggest this). But still it's not cleared up as well as I think it should have done. There's quite a bit of lees at the bottom now. Should I rack to another 5 gallon carboy to get rid of the lees then do it again? How many times can I treat with this stuff - what's the negative effect of using too much?
@HowToDoneRight
@HowToDoneRight 5 ай бұрын
You shouldn't be adding refining agents until you have racked a few times and wine is fairly clear.. all Lee's should be removed be then. I think your using your agents too soon. Have you tried bentonite? I would much rrather add that a few times.

Thank you so much for your videos. I am learning so much! I have a 5 gallon carboy of rhubarb wine that I started almost 3 months ago. I used bentonite, and it worked pretty well. 2 days ago I racked and added super-kleer.... I am truly amazed. It is beautifully clear right now. I took my readings about a month, and Fermentation was complete. I also degassed. When I added my super-kleer, my airlock started bubbling again. Maybe 1 bubble every 30 seconds. Now two days later, I'm getting one bubble every 30 to 40 minutes. Have you experienced this before? I'm now nervous to backsweeten and proceed with bottling. Please advise. Thank you. I tried to contact the company, but have not had a reply.

So, dumb question. Do kieselsol and chitosan work more effectively because kisel is negatively charged and chitosan is positively charged? What would happen if you paired chitosan with bentonite ( which is negatively charged)?
@HowToDoneRight

Yes they work great together for that exact reason one positive and one negative charge. Thats interesting throwing bentonite in there that may work too... you may be onto something. Maybe a new video lol... 😁😁

@@HowToDoneRight If I'm right kieselsol is a refined product made out of bentonite or similar ingredients. maybe for homebrewers it matters less, but in professional production the prices of the additives matter too. Additive companies like to invent a lot of products that are similar but higher pricing ;). Nice en enthousiastic video!
