This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook explains how to clear poison ivy. (See below for a shopping list and tools.)
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/Subscrib...
Cost:
N/A
Time:
1 to 2 hours to clear a 100-square-foot area
Difficulty:
Easy. Although bending over for extended periods can lead to back strain
Shopping List for How to Clear Poison Ivy:
- Duct tape, for taping closed pant hems and shirt sleeves
- Plastic trash bags, for disposing uprooted poison ivy
- Mineral-spirits-based cleanser, such as Tecnu or Zanfel, for cleaning hands
Tools for How to Clear Poison Ivy:
- Leather work gloves
- Eye goggles
Steps for Clearing Poison Ivy from Your Yard:
Tape closed pant hems at ankles, and shirt sleeves at wrists; put on eye goggles and work gloves.
Grab poison ivy plant close to ground and pull to extract root; soaking ground with water can ease root pulling.
Stuff uprooted vines into plastic trash bag; place full bag inside of another bag for extra protection against the oily vines.
Put trash bags out with household trash; never burn or compost poison ivy.
To deter poison ivy from returning, cover ground with thick layer of leaves or wood chips.
When done, scrub hands with a mineral-spirits-based cleanser, such as Tecnu or Zanfel; rinse well with cold water.
Launder clothes in separate load in washing machine.

Consider just wearing rubber boots that can be scrubbed. If a broken stem secretes the toxic resin, you can track it in your house or it'll be there next time you handle the shoes. Try DAWN dw liquid w/washcloth OR a pumice degreaser like Gojo for cleanup

I highly suggest you also carefully remove and quarantine for washing, all gloves, clothing and shoes that you wore while touching PI. Before you start working in the PI patch, lay open a plastic garbage bag on the ground by your back door or floor of garage have some baby wipes nearby. One you finish, take off your gloves, throw them in the bag, wash or wipe hands with handiwipes, then stand inside the bag while you strip off everything you had on including shoes. Wipe your hands with handiwipes after you take every piece off, esp. shoes. Wear a bathing suit under clothes if you can't be in a secluded spot when you strip. Or have a bathrobe hanging ready. Once you strip, wipe your hands again, bag it all up and take bag right to the laundry. Then immediately go shower. Use tepid water and mild soap or non-soap ceanser, no special cleanser is needed, in fact strong soap and hot water will open your pores. Simple water will actually remove the toxin. Then launder everything with any laundry detergent. Throw the garbage bag away. Wash your hands again! Also wipe down the washer door and opening as well as all the buttons you touched to make sure the toxin did not get on anything. Shoes can be rinsed off under a hose if you don't want to put them in the washer. But take out the laces and launder or wash in sink with mild soap. If you are extremely sensitive to PI, I don't recommend you do any work pulling these plants.

@you2tooyou2too 4 жыл бұрын
It is not just a toxin, but a sticky grease that you need to lather & rub off with a soapy cloth (several times) to get it all. You might try putting a few test spots of cup grease (similar texture & stickiness), to compare how effectively you are washing. Same for clothes.

Oh sure, just take off the gloves at the end... and don't bother to worry about all that poison ivy which sprayed and rubbed all over their clothes while they were grabbing the leaves and ripping out plants by the roots. That's ridiculous. If you're sensitive to it, and you had that much contact, you better have a good un-gowning procedure to get those clothes off without infecting yourself or tracking and depositing it all over your house on the way to the shower. You shouldn't wear shoes into your house that you tromped through poison ivy with, nor sit down on your furniture after squatting in the poison ivy bushes, or let your cat rub around your legs. Just make a bee-line to the shower. You might decide to strip while standing in the tub, and put all your infected clothes in a bag, and invert that bag right into the hot washing machine cycle. Meanwhile do your own shower with cool water and strong detergent with multiple repetitions of lathering. All tools and gear should be carefully cleaned with detergent or bleach. Double bag the vines so that the outside of the trash bag isn't a source of oil for the next person to handle the trash, including your trash collector!

Other people are mentioning the dishsoap,vinegar, salt trick and I think it's smart to first kill the foliage before trying to remove the roots. I'm also concerned about walking through ANY high brush with tick season in full effect and killing the foliage minimizes exposure to both ivy AND ticks.

If you take all the proper precautions, pulling it up is best because it will always come back if it's only sprayed. We remove it a lot that way for our job. We also live on a farm and have to remove it from our trees. Once removed by all the roots, then the area is maintained with a weed eater, etc, it usually doesn't come back. Sometimes you can't get all the roots on the first try though.

Pretty ridiculous video because the poison ivy urushiol will be completely adhering to both men's shirts, pants, belts and shoes and soon as they take off those gloves and touch their clothes they've got poison ivy all over them!! So I think it was stupid to release this video. They should have used poison ivy spray killer and never touched the plant. Listen to me. Listen to what I just said, never touch the plant. Jim26D deer eat poison ivy too. So if you see a deer eating a three leaved plant when your out hiking or whatever, that doesn’t mean that the plant is safe for humans. A lot of people don’t know that poison ivy isn’t poisonous to every animal, and deer and other animals eat it. Hell, the other day, one of my outdoor cats laying in a bit of poison ivy that has popped up where we had a tree cut down last year (tree was dead) because now there is sunlight where there used to be shad from the old tree and the other trees that are still there. And if you go out hiking with a pet dog, it’s best give the dog a bath when you get home because it could have rubbed up against a poison ivy plant, and when you touch the dog next, you could get the poison ivy in you. You don’t even have to touch the plant to get a rash, which is the scary thing. And everything I just said applies to poison oak and poison sumac. And if you are allergic to one, you are allergic to the other two because they all have urushiol in them, which is the oil that gives most people a bad rash.

In some parts of the country goat rental is an option. They come out put up a temporary pen around where you want the poison ivy removed and then drop off a few goats for a day or more depending on the size of the area you need cleared.
@patw52pb1
@patw52pb1 9 жыл бұрын
Michael Carroll The downside is that the goats do not eat or kill the roots and the poison ivy will be back the next spring. Goats followed by some Roundup will prevent the reemergence of the poison ivy.
@patw52pb1
@patw52pb1 9 жыл бұрын
Doug Reed And you are 100% correct about Roundup. I should have been more specific about when to use the Roundup which would be be after the poison ivy leafs out. . The alternative would be early spring application of a pre-emergent herbicide such as Trimec, Rely or a borate and followup with Roundup if the poison ivy is a stubborn kill.
@mikezaq1
@mikezaq1 9 жыл бұрын
patw52pb1 I did not think about it coming back because the roots were left in the ground. Well looks like the goat rental company's will have some long term clients if they want to be chemical free, witch is the reason people may choose goats in my opinion.

@thereviewer2939
@thereviewer2939 Жыл бұрын
It used to work, but with global warming/climate change, poison ivy evolved to be stronger against toxins, more resilient, more toxic. So Vine Killer and Brush, even full strength, doesn't work with the "upgraded" poison ivy. Not even painted full strength on all visible parts of the plant. It doesn't kill the roots, and the plant keeps coming back several times every year until you dig the roots up.

What if my poison ivy is coming through a Holly Bush? This makes it very hard to get to the roots.
@lynn6799
@lynn6799 3 жыл бұрын
Either use weed killer which so far has not harmed my Holly bush, or dig up the bush with the poison ivy. You can still try pruning the Holly back and removing as much poison ivy as possible. The put a thick layer of cardboard down with a thick layer of mulch to try to smother the poison ivy.

I must be one of the few that poison ivy and poison oak doesn't effect. My kittens play in the poison ivy and I put my bare hands in it and play with the kittens and even pick them up and the poison ivy doesn't bother me . I don't like poison ivy in certain areas of my property. I'll start pulling it up by the roots soon.

A lot of people of native American descent have immunity to poison ivy. My grandfather was Mohawk and never reacted to it. I don't tend to ever react to it and if I do it's a very mild reaction. I'm still careful though.

Hope they don't gotta go to the bathroom, trust me, it's not nice. I know. I hate the crap, I have caught it every season, every month of the year. I'm older now and am way more cautious, but even still if I'm downwind and the plant is dry enough it still gets me, that's right the stuff can get you and you don't even have to touch it. Hate it, can't say that enough

You have to dig up the roots or drop enough weed killer to kill it. If it's an old vine and large in size, you need a shovel. Nothing else will kill it.

If you got access to a goat they will eat the leaves making it slightly easier to work with just the roots. But don't touch the goat's fur after they came in contact with the oils.
