Tie off your grigri brake end before detaching your ascender
@markfishersolosailing7033 Жыл бұрын
You could attach a Third hand prusik to the brake line before you detach the pulley, the lanyard from your harness to the ascender needs to be stronger just in case the Grigri slips. your ascent was good though, i put my foot loop onto the brake line with a progress capture, it's no effort at all then to ascend this way.

I use exactly the same system for leisure tree climbing. I usually add a blocker above the grigri but not all the time of the ascent. And I usually don't hold the rope when I'm catched by the grigri. It never failed until now hopefully. The Petzl I'D and RIG are meant to be used this way, without holding rope when the system is loaded. Grigri is smaller but uses the same came system.

How do you get the rope back down from the tree??
@geosoldier16122 жыл бұрын
Hi Robbie, I use the method of throwing a line over the branch, drop to the floor, attach the rope and pull up and over. Once I am finished I just the pull the rope back over the branch. So essentially it isn't tied up in the air, just looped over...

@@geosoldier1612 so if I wanted to have a carabiner clipped over the line at the top I could just attache a throw line to it and once I’m down I can pull it down then un clip it?

@@robbiewilson7980 I am not too sure what you are trying achieve here so am probably not in the best position to advise buddy. I only climb for Geocaching purchases and don't do anything to technical or tricky. There must be a video on here of the system you desire...? I will take a look later and see if I can find something!

@@robbiewilson7980 another really useful knot I have been using with this setup is from a guy here on KZbin. It’s called the “JRB hitch”. It’s a very good retrievable knot. You would have to ascend first then tie it though.

@@robbiewilson7980 Thats what i do, seems to work fine. Just tie a figure 8 on the bight and clip that to the main line with a biner and tie your tagline to the biner before u pull it up. Theres some crossloading of the carabiner doing it this way but pretty minimal

Attaching the 'safety tether' to your leg loop is a DANGEROUS IDEA. If the grigri slips/lets go you will be caught by the 'tether', yes, but you'll also be flipped upside down! Much safer to attach the tether to the belay loop. It's built to 'catch a fall', the leg loop is not built for that. You also have the problem of how to detach the ascender etc if you have to lower yourself and gear before reaching the top or even a branch where you can un-weight the ascender. This can be done and a safer 'tether' set up if you add a prusik on the rope above the ascender and attach the tether from the belay loop to it. The ascender will push the prusik up the rope with each advance and if the tether length is just long enough to permit that advance it should still be short enough to catch the climber if the ascender and the grigri fail without risking excessive forces on the tether.

Hi Sam, Thanks for the feedback. I am currently working on a video which highlights m Top 10 Extreme caches! Keep an eye out for it soon. Stu

You are NEVER supposed to take your hand off of the rope when using a Grigri. This is a major flaw in your system. And a safety issue.
@nathanielstrawn51396 ай бұрын
While in use, meaning during decent. If the grigri is locked, it's locked. We use it for work postioning, ascending, and descending. The only time you need to worry about keeping a hand on the rope is during descending and ascending. Hand for ascending is for tending slack, while hand for descending is for controlling descent. From what I saw in this video, he made no mistake for using the grigri, unless I missed a part where he pulled the handle while having his other hand free.

@@nathanielstrawn5139This is not correct. It can unlock if you shift your weight or give it a little bounce, there are many in-depth analyses of this effect on KZbin. As climbers, we never let go of the brake line without first putting a stopper knot right below us. I know many people use the Grigri this way as standard protocol, but two things are inevitably true: it is a direct violation of manufacturer instructions, and it is easy to demonstrate the failure mode in real life. Your life is your life, though.

@geometerfpv2804 Copy. I stumbled across that video after watching this one. It can be used for ascent and descent with careful attention (preferably using an ID, instead) and safety stopper knots when going hands free. I'm using a grigri plus for sport in climbing trees, and it's wonderful. Definitely using the stopper.

always maintain a brake hand and tie catch knots on your way up. no stress then
@aidey8mph605 Жыл бұрын
If you are holding onto the ascender or connected in then you should be fine. When rappelling back down ALWAYS have a hand on the break end of the rope pulling down on it below the grigri. Edit: I honestly prefer to just switch to a rescue 8 belay device with prusik for descent because I trust it more.
@AdrianCalgary Жыл бұрын
Your method works if you reach the top branch. If you need to get down prior to that, you need to remove slack to be able to take off the petzl ascender. Your system will limit this slack removal so you're stuck

I don't like this at all! I think you should get properly trained in the use of climbing equipment and refrain from posting videos until you've got something good to share. You look shifty in that woodland setting and come across more like a burglar than anything else! Bless you for trying and I did watch until the end but glad you didn't fall out the tree
