I never had to worry about my fat Pekins getting off the ground, but now that I have a sweet family of Muscovy ducks, there is a problem. They are flying onto my greenhouse! I heard you can cut the feathers. Thank you for explaining the procedure so well.

Thank you for posting this. We rescued a Scovy duck from along the road. We think she lost her mate because she was wandering a lot. She flew away once and we found her again. We have a lot of browns and Pekins but we didn't know how to do this. And we were afraid she would get hit on the road. Cheers!

What happens if there are blood feathers before you cut?
@anthonyferreira90592 жыл бұрын
Thanks, specially how to check the blood in feathers and what to do if wrongly cutting
@FlatEarthKiller2 жыл бұрын
If blood comes out of a feather, please remove the entire feather or it will be a straw that drains the blood.

This may not be the case for everyone as I don't know too much about the breed but I had a flock of khaki kampbells for a year and some did flap but none of mine flew.

if there are blood feathers what do you do? Do you wait till all the wings are good?
@Melissa.duck32 ай бұрын
You do not cut the blood feathers only flight feathers and if they do not have them yet they are Likely too young and have not grown them yet but some domestic birds like cauga ducks can't fly due to weight and small wings. If a blood feather is accidentally cut you can apply styptic powder, corn starch or flour to the damaged end of the feather. To stop the bleeding I would recommend pressing a q tip on the end of the feather or wound after this once the feather is pulled or removed a new one will form and maturation process will take 4-6 weeks.

When should I clip my ducks wings. Got same duck as you. They say 15 weeks, mine are about 12 weeks. I had one fly away last night
@ztpoutdoors6623 жыл бұрын
If you check there wing feathers and there are no blood feathers left you can clip them. If there are blood feathers you'll be able to tell because they will have blood in them and will be a darker color then the other empty feather. Also if you do clip them and find you missed a blood feather and accidentally clip it. It's not a big deal but you'll need to pluck that feather out of the wing to stop the bleeding. Otherwise the feather acts as a straw and will allow the blood to flow out.
@vikramjairam437411 ай бұрын
I generally clip my chickens on only one side. Never ducks. This is good info. Don’t know how to look for blood feathers though. I have 8 Pekingese’s ducks and they have tiny wings - about 6 weeks old. I’ll watch out for flying behavior. Thanks.
@stradekun25544 жыл бұрын
When is the right age to do it? I plan on getting a pet duck soon and we want him to live outside in our backyard. It’s pretty big but I just wanna know when is the right age.
@ztpoutdoors6624 жыл бұрын
I just wait until I see flying behavior. Once they start flying a longer distance horizontally, but still not getting to much lift vertically that's when I would clip them. Depending on the type of duck you get you may not even need to. Many domestic ducks don't fly, or at least not week enough to fly away. Also just so you know. You may want to consider getting a pair. Ducks are really very social and having a pair allows them to not be lonely while you may be busy.
@amandamiller12634 жыл бұрын
How old is your duck in this video? My mallard is 8 weeks but I think I'm suppose to wait till 15 weeks to trim her wings?
@ztpoutdoors6624 жыл бұрын
I dont remember how old it was at this point. But yes they say you should wait until 15 weeks old. I think this guy was probably a bit younger than that. As he was just starting to get his sex feathers. So im thinking it may have been somewhere closer to 12 weeks. Their feathers are still growing until 15 weeks. Thats why they say to wait. In my experience I check for blood feathers, if I don't see any i clip them. That has worked for me. I didnt actually know about this 15 week thing until not long ago. If you were ever to clip a blood feather simply pluck it out with a pliers and it will be fine. I havent had that happen yet either. Im not telling you to clip before 15 weeks but i know i have. And i believe I probably did even in this video without problems.

Question ... I was told to only do 1 side
@Melissa.duck32 ай бұрын
Depending on the situation you can clip one side or both of you do both the duck will not be able to fly at all but if you do one the duck will be able to flap up but not have very good balance or direction so if you don't want ur birds flying off but it's ok for them to have a lil flap about or fly onto a Perch then just one will do fine

will the ducks still be able to fly? i dont want to only clip one just in case they fall and it will throw them off and they will crash land

The reason I do one is because they can't get any lift. And are unable to fly. But they can still flutter down if they jumped from somewhere high. I've had no issues anyway!

Lol. Its a drake. His sex feathers were already coming in when this video was made. Ducks are called drakes and ducks. Hens are chickens. Thanks for your comment, but just because you aren't able to distinguish a juvenile drake from a juvenile duck in this video doesn't make it a HEN.
