Why not just clone the existing NVMe drive to the already installed HDD storage drive, shut down the computer, install the new larger NVMe drive, then boot from the HDD storage drive (which now has the original OS on it with Macrium already installed) and then clone this HDD to the new NVMe drive?
@hometechadventure44624 жыл бұрын
This will work as well with Macrium, but Macrium would need to adjust the system to work with the HDD instead of an SSD, and then re-align the system to work with an SSD again for the second clone. I think this would result in more chances for errors than with the disk image option.
@garysevin81264 жыл бұрын
@Home Tech Adventure As they say "there is more than one way to skin a cat". I did mine my way and it worked perfect! Total time start to finish was just under 1 hour. I also did not need to download disk management software as there is a setting in Macrium that allows you to resize partitions BEFORE you clone the drives (and yes I'm using the free version). However I forget to mention that the data HDD contains hidden restoration files so if you want the capabilities of being able to restore your OMEN (or any other laptop with a similar storage configuration) to it's factory original state with the new drives you need to also clone the data drive to the new data SSD BEFORE you use it to clone the main (NVMe) drive to it. If you just install a blank SSD drive into the data drive slot you WILL NOT have the option of using onboard recovery anymore. BTW a quick adjustment in the BIOS was all that was necessary to enable booting from the data HDD position.

@@hometechadventure4462 Thanks for your video and these additional comments by Gary, It helped me replace my M.2 card in my laptop. The Instructions to extend an existing partition, when going from a smaller M.2 to a larger M.2 were not very clear, anywhere. You did mention that the partitions had to be next to each other in order to extend them. So, when I cloned my drive, I drag each of my 4 partitions manually to the target, placing the C Drive (or 3rd partition) last. Now that it was next to the empty partition, I could use the advanced Partition option to extend it to the full size! It would not work staying in the 3rd position, because the 4th partition was blocking it from extending. Rearranging the partitions did not matter, boots perfectly. Hope this will help anyone else out who is trying to upgrade they M.2 to a larger one. Did not even need to download that other software package. Thanks Again!

I tried to upgrade the 256gb nvme in my laptop to a larger 2tb nvme, so I bought an external enclosure for the new 2tb one and used Marcium's clone tool from the old to the new nvme. I put the new 2tb nvme in the laptop and it wouldn't boot, it kept saying Windows needed to be repaired. This confused me because I have upgrade serveral SSDs on desktops by just sing the clone tool in Macrium. It was a little difficult to remove the case but it finally came off. I’ve ordered a new battery which should arrive tomorrow. More to come. My recommendation for future videos is to give users a list of software to download first. Also you probably shouldn’t badmouth the folks you get “free” software from. If they get a buck or two from the advertising that keeps them in business. I have nothing against “free” if you are testing. Once this works I will gladly pay the Macrium and Minitools folks.

Hello, this is such an informative video. I have the same laptop with 1TB of memory, 16GB RAM, and 16 GB optane M.2. I would like to upgrade it but I have many questions how to do it since I am new at doing this kind of upgrade. 1)By cloning the NVMe SSD to a larger one, are you cloning windows and the data into the new one right? 2)If you are cloning the windows and data to the new NVMe SSD, can you used a SSD SATA to store more data as well? I will appreciate your help with this upgrade. I've been looking for someone that not only shows how to upgrade the hardware but also shows how to keep all the programs and data after the upgrade for this particular laptop.
@hometechadventure44624 жыл бұрын
From what you are saying, it looks like you have a 1TB Hard Drive, with 16GB of RAM. The 16GB Optane M.2 is used as a smart cache to make the system faster and more responsive with the slow HD. You probably won't see much speed improvement or none at all with an NVMe SSD. I think the NVMe SSD would need to replace the Optane M.2. 1) Yes you are cloning everything to the new drive. But remember, the Optane M.2 you have is on used for a fast cache or buffer, the Windows installation and all of your data is actually on the 1TB HD. In this case, you would need to clone the HD to the NVMe M.2. If you do it with the HD still installed in the computer, you may need to change the drive letters to avoid conflicts. 2) You can use a 2.5" SATA HD or SSD in conjunction with an M.2 NVMe for additional storage.

Can you create an image on D drive and boot from that drive without pulling it out and hooking up via usb?
@hometechadventure44624 жыл бұрын
This should be possible, but remember, and image is not bootable. You need to restore the image to a drive to have it be bootable. If you want to do this you create a clone instead of an image to the other drive. When you boot into the new drive (you will probably need to manually choose the correct boot drive), you will need to change the drive letter on your original drive. You can use Disk Management for this.
@rafalkrasowski15294 жыл бұрын
Have tried creating a clone on D drive to hopefully boot from that drive and clone again to new ssd but got an error on first attempt. Second attempt clone went smooth but still windows would not boot from HDD :( I guess I will have to buy m.2 usb adapter and create an image on the new drive that way I will skip the HDD part. If I'm right ;)
@hometechadventure44624 жыл бұрын
Try the new drive an boot into the recovery partition. Sometimes F11 will get there. Or, try 3 unsuccessful boots and it should then start in recovery mode (search for details). If you have an installer you can boot from that and in the bottom left corner choose repair your computer. If your computer is set to boot in UEFI mode, I show one method to make an installer here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4Wth4p-m7amj5o If you are booting in Legacy mode you can use the Windows Media Creation Tool to make an installer. Once you get to the recovery or repair, you can try to repair you disk. This may allow you to boot from it.

Macrium Reflect should be able to clone from SSD to HD and then back from HD to SSD without issue, but it needs to translate certain items that make each medium different. The image file preserves the SSD format even when placed on a HD, so no translation is done either way which should make the process more reliable.

Can I create the disk image directly on a USB? I want to change my ssd from 128gb to one of 1tb
@hometechadventure44624 жыл бұрын
I do not know what you mean by "directly on a USB." A USB what? Hard disk, SSD? Generally, you can create an image on anything with sufficient capacity that will connect to your computer. If you want to connect your new 1tb drive via a USB adapter of some sort, then you will need to CLONE the disk instead of creating an IMAGE. Macrium Reflect should be able to CLONE to a larger drive and adjust the partition size at the same time. Then you just need to replace the old 128GB drive with the 1TB and it should boot.
