We got sent some Paw Paw seeds! My buddy Bill at HOP farms is hosting a collab where he sent out some Paw Paw seeds to all over to have people attempt to grow them. The first step when trying to grow Paw Paw from seed is to cold stratify the seeds. Here I show you 3 ways that I'm trying to cold stratify the seeds we got sent.

Glad to be part of this Bill! Really hoping I can get all these to sprout so I can start working on that food forest at my parents property, these would be a great tree to have growing over there

I like the fact you put some in the ground right away. That will be cool to see if those do well. You don't anticipate any issues growing around the black walnut do you?
@Citystead
@Citystead 4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the Black Walnut has affected my cherry trees over there but with the paw paw, they play very well with black walnut so I't a perfect spot for them. Also my older paw paw trees are right on the other side of that tree and they are doing well

Sure was a good video. Growing trees from seed is a challenge and fun. I grew a pink lady and minature lime from seed and they are now around a foot tall. Good luck on your seed growing. Have a good day.

Pawpaws in the north are normally ready to eat in Sept. This is where I get my seeds. You can't let the seeds dry out. What do you do with the seeds between Sept - Dec before the 3- 4 month stratification period?

I'm doing something similar in the Sonoran Desert. I purchased 35 pounds of seeds. 20 LB are from the "USDS National Clonal Germplasm Repository at KSU". 15 LB are Clifford England hybrids. Doing stratification, wake up, hydroponic & cloning experiments. KSU recommends (90-120) days at 38F to 42F.

I have asked Pete Kanasis at Green Dreem if he grows pawpaws or has heard anybody growing pause in Florida. He said not the typical pawpaw that I'm thinking of but there is a variety that grows well in Florida.

The local cooperative extension suggested scarifying the seeds before planting. I’m thinking I will do half of them. What are your thoughts on this? Any suggestions on how to do it?

Loved your video. I am planning on using the same process - some seeds in the ground, some in a container that will allow for tap root, and some in the fridge. I live in Southwest VA and want to plant some in the ground.... It's August right now and the pawpaw's are just beginning to fall. Should I wait to plant the seeds in the ground til later in the season to stratify or can I go ahead and plant them now? Last year was a pretty mild winter and usually we have a decent winter after a mild one. I have noticed that pawpaw's do best when you just leave them alone...what would you recommend? Thanks for the great vid and lots of info.

I think I would wait another month before I put seeds in the ground. I'm going to be attempting the same thing again this year with some new seeds I got. They don't seem to have a high germination rate in my experience so far. I do have one tree from a couple years ago I was able to start from seed it was 1-8 that germinated and now it's a couple feet tall. I'd be interested to know if you have any better luck your zone might be slightly better for them as we get really cold here and the seeds I have used have all been sourced from the NC, Tennessee are so far

Thank you for your quick response. I have lots of 4-5 year old trees on my property that have grown just from the fruit dropping. So I am going to try to emulate that in a controlled setting. I'd be happy to mail you some fruit, that way you could keep the seeds "wet." This will be my first attempt at growing a pawpaw. I have lots of fruit to get lots of seeds though, so that is good. I have read the germination rate is very low and even if you get a tree to take - it may not fruit. I have one Pawpaw tree on my property (probably ten years old or more) that doesn't fruit at all. Totally odd! The tree just beside it fruits. I so enjoy pawpaw season and look forward to it every year!

Is this the fall/autumn that you planted? ( looks like you did) I’d like to plant straight in to ground . We live near Lake Ontario so very similar growing region. Great video!
@Citystead
@Citystead 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I planted in the fall because the seeds need to be cold stratified. Paw paw seeds are very tricky to get the sprout and on this try I had no luck with any of them so I'm going to try a few more I have for next year.

Growing near a black walnut? Toxic Jugalone can extend 50-80 feet around black walnuts. Maybe that’s why your cherries are not doing well
