In episode 11 of Mediterranean Bonsai we are going on the beach and we are doing air layering to a Tamarix branch (Tamarix hampeana) for bonsai!
The genus Tamarix ( tamarisk , salt cedar ) is composed of about 50-60 species of flowering plants in the family Tamaricaceae, native to drier areas of Europe, Asia and Africa. The generic name originated in Latin and may refer to the Tamaris River in Hispania Tarraconensis in Spain.
They are evergreen or deciduous shrubs or trees growing to 1-18 m in height and forming dense thickets. The largest, Tamarix aphylla, is an evergreen tree that can grow to 18 m tall. They usually grow on saline soils, tolerating up to 15,000 ppm soluble salt and can also tolerate alkaline conditions.
Tamarisks are characterized by slender branches and grey-green foliage. The bark of young branches is smooth and reddish brown. As the plants age, the bark becomes bluish-purple, ridged and furrowed.
The leaves are scale-like, almost like that of junipers, 1-2 mm long, and overlap each other along the stem. They are often encrusted with salt secretions.
The pink to white flowers appear in dense masses on 5-10 cm long spikes at branch tips from March to September, though some species (e.g., T. aphylla) tend to flower during the winter.
Tamarix can spread both vegetatively, by adventitious roots or submerged stems, and sexually, by seeds. Each flower can produce thousands of tiny (1 mm diameter) seeds that are contained in a small capsule usually adorned with a tuft of hair that aids in wind dispersal. Seeds can also be dispersed by water. Seedlings require extended periods of soil saturation for establishment. Tamarisk trees are most often propagated by cuttings.
Tamarix species are fire-adapted, and have long tap roots that allow them to intercept deep water tables and exploit natural water resources. They are able to limit competition from other plants by taking up salt from deep ground water, accumulating it in their foliage, and from there depositing it in the surface soil where it builds up concentrations temporarily detrimental to some plants. The salt is washed away during heavy rains.

Thanks for the video. Tamarisk are extreame in many ways. Perhaps the most invasive trees on the planet. Capable of surviving high salt, years of drought and capable of growing roots that go down over 10 meters. Once the tree gets to ground water a full size tree can transpire hundred of liters of water per day. These trees should be amazing for bonsai but also have the capacity to wipe out entire ecosystems. It is believed the tree can no longer be eradicated from the United States where it’s killing millions of willow trees. I both fascinated and worried about Tamarisk trees on the American continent. Let us know how it air layered. I have a feeling this tree will grow roots from any size cutting making air layering unnecessary. I’m still learning about the tree. I found some growing while on vacation and took a few branches to try as cuttings. Best, MH

Thank you so much. Excellent video. Clearly described. I wish to try this on my mature Tamarix tree. Could you tell me when to start the process shown in your video. We live in Zone 4/5, i.e. long winters with lowest temperatures down to -28º C and highest summer approximately 40º Centigrade. Tamarix is rare here, and in 25 to 30 years, I have not seen another to buy.

Great idea - please show follow up video. Do you have to keep returning to water the soil surrounding the cut area?

Did his tree get roots ? I would of thought this is the wrong time to be doing air layering , I usually wait till the tree is in growing mode pushing buds etc , your tree looks dormant , curious if it worked for you.

I'm on a small laptop in Northwestern Canada, just south of Alaska. On automatic browser size, I can see his upper body, head, and importantly, exactly in detail, what he is doing to successfully layer the tamarix. I'm going to try this on my mature Tamarix tree. They are very rare up here and I have not seen another to buy.
