This is a great video: you guys are getting better than the Two Ronnies! And, incidentally, you just taught me all I know about yamadori! (I guess my 3 yardadori seedlings - 2 red cedars and 1 ash - growing in the weeds of the patio of our new place don’t count… if they are thinner than a pencil, don’t count them!)

I really enjoyed this both Xav and Jelle. I was in stitches at the scene with the black stockings on your head. I have a photo of me and my brother as toddlers dressed up as bank robbers looking similarly dodgy 😂 As for the yamadori collecting, my general guide is to dig between 6 and 18 inches (that's the absolute max) from the trunk depending on the thickness of the trunk. I then put the roots in a bag and pour some water into the bag. They normally stay like that for the evening and I pot them up the following morning. Many of my collected trees ended up being bare rooted, and in general they did fine. Just blackthorn and larch that I have struggled with.

@XaviersBonsaiRetreat2 жыл бұрын
I think early winter which I have done every year for the past 5 years. i have never really bothered collecting in spring...though I know people do that just as well. I just find doing it earlier gives the tree a better start. Personnal preference in the end. Thanks Xav

That was hilarious! I loved it! No wonder you're out of breath, she had a broom! Haha!! Good thing you're far away, Jelle couldn't reach to smack you. That one tree had branches growing like the star of David, that was crazy! That poor shovel! What did it do to deserve that?! Take the broken piece off the handle and shove the handle into what's left of the metal sleeve, jam a screw through to hold it. or you can screw it in, whatever... :)

Thanks marysol for all of that. I had a lot of fun putting this together especially with all of the footage Jelle provided me. I'm not sure the humour sits with everyone but that is who I am :) The shovel is still in two pieces sulking in the van!

😂😂Well done. I’ve always read that spring is the best time to collect. Have you had success collecting late fall? Thanks, keep growing
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat2 жыл бұрын
I always collect in early winter and have done so for the past four years without any failures. I have collected in spring but I find those collected in December have a big head start. It is also avoids clogging up valuable time in spring when I have so many repots to do :)

Using Vaseline jelly (petroleum jelly) to seal tree wounds is not recommended. While it might seem like a quick fix to cover the wound, petroleum jelly can actually trap moisture, create a barrier that prevents the tree from naturally healing, and could even foster the growth of fungi or bacteria that thrive in moist environments.
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat2 ай бұрын
You do make an excellent point and it is soemthing I shoudl have mentioned. The truth is that budget constraints often mean I have to find alternative solutions. In this case all of the chops have healed well and I have not seen any adverse effects. have you had problems yourself with this?
@OutsidethePot Жыл бұрын
Collecting is the easy part. How to get it to take once you get it home. That’s the tuff part. I have a 60% success rate but I’d like to increase that.
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Жыл бұрын
I suppose the collection places can get pretty isolated for some ardent enthusiasts. In truth, I have found throwing them into a garbage bag with the existing soil works fine. I think my success rate isn't that mcuh different from yours. I definitely lost 40% of the 50 oaks I collected :)
@OutsidethePot Жыл бұрын
I live in a place now that has many trees and bushes that are very suitable for collecting. San Antonio Tx. I collect everywhere even right behind my house in a public park, the park rangers shake their fingers at me. Plastic bag and a socked towel. On longer trips I do bring buckets of water. I will be moving to Colorado and be hunting in the mountains.
