I've always used union inks to make colors but I never used a scale. I starting screen printing in 2007 and was taught by someone that had been doing it for at least 20 years before that. He never wanted to use a scale and felt the best way to understand colors was to mix them by eye. Very rarely would I struggle to make a color needed for a job. The key is practice, practice, practice, and learn your primary, secondary, and tertiary colors like the back of your hand.

I used to mix by color as well, until I had an order from a popular franchise. They told me that they wanted the exact colors for their logo and would not accept the order if the color was not the Pantone number they gave me. Ever since then I have been using the scale. I must admit, it's much faster to mix by eye though. :)

Each brand should have its own software to do the mixing formula. For Example, I use Wilflex inks and the software I use is IMS 3.0
