Currently combing mine out. I had them for 7 years! Recently cut them from waist length to collarbone length due to the heat, last night I made up my mind to just comb them out & start over. I'm retaining a lot of hair! 😊

I saturate my locs individually (with castor oil) as I take them out… it takes me about 5 mins to take out an 8” inch loc… I’ve have to take a few out along the journey mostly to either marry two small locks or separate a lock that was too heavy… I’m extremely tendered headed, and the process is pain free with the oil… I tried taking it out with water, that was a night mare….✌🏾 The cleaner you keep your locks the easier it is to take them out… if you use a lot of product, you should do a few apple cider vinegar detoxes before you start the process of taking them out… it will be 100% easier and quicker…

Im using locs to maintain my daughter's hair. We're both tired of fighting what her hair naturally wants to do (which is loc.)She's 9 with waist length 4a hair. I told her she can take them out when shes ready to care for her hair herself. Her hair shrank to her shoulders over the last month since i installed her locs. Im gonna show her this video.

How long have you had your locs? You will lose the hair you weren’t able to shed while your hair was loc’d but it should be ok, shedding is totally normal even for loose hair. You’ll have to make sure your hair is really moisturized once they are combed out. Also don’t pay attention to what ppl say. Good luck with middle school!

Have you ever tried using a small crochet hook in addition to the comb? Lastly, I have a head full of wavy to poodle curly hair. Since I started using ETHIQUE Shampoo and conditioner bars with a vinegar rinse my hair is so much healthier. The bars are all natural oils I use Frizz Wrangler & The Gaurdian since my scalp produces 0 oil. They sell small trial sizes & the full bars last me 2 months, but I only wash once a week & oil my hair rhe other days. Just an idea. I'm super chemically sensative so bey-bey Migraines. Your advise would be very helpful. 💜 Nancy in Chicago

I’m in the middle of taking mine down now and my thumbs are aching! I’m taking a break because they hurt so bad. Did your thumbs hurt during the take out process? If so, how long did the pain last and how did you handle it while continuing to comb out your Locs?
@TheTianaAlexandra
@TheTianaAlexandra 8 ай бұрын
Whew, yes! The pain of the comb poking that thumb is no joke! If I wanted to keep going, I’d adjust my finger position so the comb didn’t touch any fingers. I had to pace myself with the take down process because of having a newborn, so the times I wasn’t able to take them down I’d let my fingers rest. It didn’t hurt more than 48 hours. I took 14 days for my takedown. You can set a limit for yourself and stop before it gets painful.

Do you think 5 month old locs would be difficult to comb out? What's the time frame matched for still being able to get a productive comb out?
@TheTianaAlexandra
@TheTianaAlexandra Жыл бұрын
I combed my 1st set out at 5 months, it’s not hard at all. The less time you’ve had them, the easier it may be. However, you can comb them out no matter what length of time you’ve had them. I don’t think there’s a specific time frame for a productive comb out. It’s in the patience you have while doing it and making sure the loc is saturated with water and conditioner.

@TheTianaAlexandra
@TheTianaAlexandra 8 ай бұрын
The time it would take depends on how many you have and the length and width of the locs. With your work schedule it may take longer to take down. Some people say it takes them a month+. If I were you I’d try to take one down on an off day and time it. Then knowing how long it takes you, you may be able to get a few down before or after work. I’d two strand twist the locs I’ve taken down so that they sort of blend in with the rest. I’d start in either the very back or the middle to conceal the loose hair.

Hey I’ve had my locs 8 years and I’m ready to comb them out now. I wanted to ask if it would be fine for me to also take my hair apart from the roof I heard you mention the root isn’t locked?
@TheTianaAlexandra
@TheTianaAlexandra 8 ай бұрын
When you take down your locs or any type of braid style you want to start at the ends. But with the root area I’m talking about your new growth and the small section of hair at the top that’s still not mature. I’d just lightly untwist that section (if you get your locs palm rolled/twisted) and see how far I can go.

Im not worried about losing length, worried wbout losing all that shed hair might make my hair look thin or my locs will be real skinny if i want to loc up again. Do you think that losing all that shed hair would just be the same thing as if I had just waited til my hair was this long to lock up? If you know what mean? I think starting locs from shorter hair has the advantage that all that shed hair staying in the loc makes them appear thicker.

I understand your concern. Your hair sheds regardless no matter what styles it’s in. The difference when loc’d is that shed hair is going down the coil (in my case) and making the loc matte up. That’s just the process. Now I can’t speak for everyone but my hair is just as thick as it was before ever loc’n. It didn’t lose density because I combed them out. The disadvantage of starting with longer hair I feel is that it shrinks up more and it takes longer for the locs to appear longer. The shed hair is doing the same thing as it would on shorter hair, making the loc thicker and helping it to loc. I think it’s easier to see growth as far as length is concerned when someone starts with shorter hair. The shed hair doesn’t have to go down as far if that makes sense. I’m speaking from starting with shorter hair my 1st set and with a little length the 2nd set.

@@TheTianaAlexandra thanks for you reply. Yeah no I don't mean density at the scalp/root but rather the appearance of higher density due to that shed hair being maintained in the locs themselves. Like imagine you comb out a loc and then you lock it back up immediately using a crochet or whatever, necessarily that loc is going to be thinner having lost all that shed hair. Now multiply that by 60 locs (my loc count with sides and back faded and fairly thick locs) and I just wonder how different it will look. It's difficult for me to gauge how much thinner my locs will be and if I'm going to regret it because of it. The thing that gives me hope is the root of my locs are more or less the same size as the tips, so maybe it won't be so bad? Also I don't want to do instalocks so your point about longer hair taking even longer to lock kinda scares me too. Anywya, appreciate your information!

I have had my locks since 2010, have I had these locks too long to think that I could comb them out, some of the locks broke off, and I had to combine a few. Do you have any tips you could share? Thank you
@TheTianaAlexandra
@TheTianaAlexandra 5 ай бұрын
Hi! My locs were only 2 years old however I would look up loc comb outs on 10+ year locs. I’ve seen someone give insight on what to do for the double headed dragons (combined locs). You can still comb them out but in general it’s just an extremely tedious and time consuming task. Since you’ve had yours so long I assume they’re long in length and I’d cut half of my length or wherever you’re comfortable and save those locs, then comb out what I can salvage. That way if you want to go back to your locs you can use your own as extensions and attach them back. I hope I was able to help some.

Did you start off with ur hair that long when u locked it? If no About where did ur natural hair fall in length before u loc’d ? Also did u struggle with thinness after combing out?
@TheTianaAlexandra
@TheTianaAlexandra 11 ай бұрын
No, my hair was probably a little lower than shoulder length. I have a one year loc update video where I show my loose hair before loc’n up both times if you’d like to see a visual. I also didn’t struggle with thinness due to the comb out but the hair that wasn’t able to shed for the 2 years I was loc’d was lost. That didn’t make it thin tho. I also had a baby at the beginning of the year and had a bit of postpartum shedding mixed in, but it’s still extremely thick. However, I did have a lot of split ends. I got them cut off a few days after the comb out and even with the cut my hair is still the longest it’s ever been.

So when washing the hair the locs already open a bit on the roots. Could I just wash it multiple times for them to open completely?
@TheTianaAlexandra
@TheTianaAlexandra 5 ай бұрын
It’s not locked at the root because that’s where the new growth is. Washing doesn’t help it open more than it already is.

i’m combing mine out, do skinny locs take more time than thicker ones?
@TheTianaAlexandra
@TheTianaAlexandra Жыл бұрын
Whew, yes!! It’s easier to get the metal part of the comb through the thicker ones. Mine ranged in size all over my head and the ones in the back were smaller and took longer initially. Once you find your groove it’s not that bad.

Did you notice a difference in your curl pattern or its thickness after combing out your locs?
@TheTianaAlexandra
@TheTianaAlexandra Ай бұрын
The first time I combed my locs out the curl pattern and thickness were the same. This time they both were the same but I did end up experiencing postpartum shedding, so I had to wait that out for a few months. That was hormonal tho so I don’t attribute that to the loc comb out.
